DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pickaxe question...
« on: October 27, 2010, 02:22:25 am »
Does the material that they're made out of affect how fast miners are able to dig?

Nope, but having higher quality picks can be useful if the miners get cornered by a hostile and try to defend themselves.  A (masterwork) steel pick in a legendary miner's hands does wonders against most basic ANY cave life such as elk birds FBs

Fixed =]

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best job cancellation method EVER

Nothing too great, but i did get this one a while ago

Urist McSwimmy cancels drink: Dangerous Terrain

Not funny on it's own, but he was actually pinned against the edge of the embark area by a river because he was so thirsty he decided to just jump in. I have no idea how(or more importantly, why), but he stayed there swimming until he died of thirst and would never get out or do anything else. Or drink all the water that was EVERYWHERE.

Water, water, everywhere Nor any drop to drink....

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Not Your Average Dead Liason
« on: October 26, 2010, 03:13:08 am »
Not sure why the human liason came at that time
but when world generation occurs, wounding is kinda weird, like something that would kill in your fortress they otherwise shrug off and keep going with their lives
but the moment they walk into your fortress whereabouts they suddenly realise that they have, say 14 assorted daggers imbedded into their spleen and die

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: !!Science!!
« on: October 23, 2010, 06:27:33 am »
why is Dwarven science always on fire?
Because normal science is boring
And because normal science rarely involves magma as part of a controlled experimental process.
what control?
Good point.
I don't know, I plan things carefully.  Then it all goes wrong.
Planning? What kind of dwarfgineer are you? Also, pyramid.
A half elf one.  Also, pyramid indeed.
You need a magma bath. NOW. pyramid megaproject.
Magma is a bit too warm for a bath...    Also, maybe I'll build one.
Run magma under water. You now have a sauna. *pyramids*
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Fixed that for you...  sort of.  Also, I ran out of things to make with Candy.
It's not ALWAYS on fire.... after all, once you mix in water, its encased in obsidian.
Which you hastily mine away so you can re-ignite the !!Science!!.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I firmly believe the best science is !!physics!!.
What about !!!!science!!!! ?

So if you want to make something out of sand, be REALLY nice to elves, because they bring by far the most.

You have the gall to call yourself a dwarf?

Only fools (and masochists) deliberately anger the elves when they have the potential to bring trade goods that no other race can offer, such as giant eagles, grizzly bears, and elephants.

Isn't that only if you quadruple the carrying capacity of mules or something?

in your \dfg_31_12_b_win\data\init\init.txt file, find the entry for

[FPS_CAP:100]

Change this to your liking.  It will sure as hell drop below your cap, but it won't go above, no matter how many spare processing cycles you have.

Set to 0 for uncapped.

I wouldn't recommend setting it to 0
If you do,w hen you pause, the FPS sky rockets to 20000 or so (over 9000!) and it makes it... impossible to select anything from the menus

You shouldn't be able to dodge in a 1x1, meaning you'd be missing a defensive skill entirely, though you'd gain the others faster.

If that's true, and you made 1x1 to train up legendary shield users and blockers(weapon skill)...  Does that mean they'd always block and never dodge? You could train a unit of elite bridge-fighters and never worry about them falling to their dooms.

Yes, but I'm almost positive that blocking takes priority over dodging, and even a legendary +5 shield user regularly dodges, so if you remove that entire skill then your dwarf is just taking the hit. Might be okay with edged weapon users that your armor outclasses, but a blunt weapon can easily break a bone like that, and generally(in my experience) the first major injury is the last one, unless your dwarf just got unlucky and has lots of backup to clear the invaders off his unlucky near-corpse.

It's much easier to drain or floor over all the murky pools than engineer some crazy semi deathtrap to raise them to adequate swimmers that will occasionally maybe eat a dwarf. Heck, all you really have to do is channel out a tile in the side of it so there's a ramp for them to get out of, they'll get out fine as long as they aren't unconscious or missing several limbs, in the latter case you kinda want them to die anyway.

I could see wanting swimmers if you had a major river or ocean on your map, but those both slow me and my crappy computer down so much i never use them anymore.

Edit: also, you will max out all combat related stats from danger room training quickly enough as it is, swimming a little won't speed it up or give you something important you wouldn't get otherwise.

If they don't have ANY swimming skill whatsoever, they WILL drown if they fall/dodge into the water, even if there's a ramp 1 tile away
I think any depth above 5 will make them panic and drown, anything below 4 they can walk out of, or something
You need either competent or adequate skill at swimming for them to not panic if they get dumped into the water (whichever one is higher), and for some reason, I don't think they panic if the water is dumped on them, instead of the other way around *shrug*, also, they can keep fighting (training) under water

And flooring over the pools would mean giving up! It would mean that we're AFRAID of the water
We are dwarves, not some pansy elf folk

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma virgin question
« on: October 20, 2010, 04:29:55 am »
Natural walls and floors and whatnot are completely safe. Unless they're made of ice. Ice is weird, so it'll melt. Unless it's a constructed ice wall, which won't melt.

It's confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

What about brimstone?

I thought it was supposed to melt in any contact with magma, but not water.

There's brimstone in this game????
O.o

With Silver warhammers.

Everyone says this, but it's pretty easily demonstrated as a myth in arena mode.

Edit: I mean to say, the idea that silver or platinum is better than steel is a myth.  Not that people use them, which they do, obviously.

I'm not sure where the post is, but someone conclusively proved that silver is better then steel as a material for a warhammer
Basically, what he did was, ran dozens, (maybe hundreds, not too sure, been a while since I read the post) of simulations for every possible match up, then used a data miner to find out the wounds, and then made a percentage table showing the hits, and how much damage they caused...
