For number 3, you can make rock pots which hold booze just like barrels.

hey, thanks, it ended up leaving stagnant water, and my farmer ended up going to it and turning it into murky water? No idea. I'm on a warm climate, it will evaporate, right?

DF Gameplay Questions / Z-level Ice wall question
« on: July 30, 2011, 09:35:55 pm »
So I was digging my fortress out of the side of a mountain when I noticed a spot I wanted is filled with water, ice to be exact.

Diagram:

O -- Surface, "ice"
X -- Ice Wall, where I want to clear out a room but cant because that is there

So if I mine out the X does that mean that mean that the surface ice will eventually melt and splash all over my dwarfs? And does that mean I will have to build a floor at the top to ensure there.. well.. there isn't a hole leading into my fortress?

EDIT: Here is what I am talking about

Wow. I'd just first like to say that I use to play DF a long time ago, and I was okay at it, and I just came back and DF hasn't "hit" me like it has before. I always restart because I strive to be perfection, I lose, or die, and I just can't get back into the game. After reading the holy story this has convinced me to start playing again :). It refreshed my mind with ideas and thoughts of FUN. So I would personally like to thank all of you.

But one question. I am confused about this log cabin thing. Can you build a log cabin or whatever and then random dwarfs will claim it? Sorry, I just never knew about this.

I know this doesn't relate, but where could I find pictures or designs of people's fortresses? Especially the entrances and bedroom designs and such.

General Discussion / Re: Oslo Hit by Terrorism!

My understanding is that Denmark has very loose laws regarding immigration and welfare, it basically hands out free money to anyone who comes. And also, my understanding is that the far-right groups that are now having power in the government AREN'T Pro-taking-better-efforts-for-assimilation, just Anti-Islam and Pro-Raicsm. Since 44% of terrorist attacks in the US from 1980-2006 were Latinos (Mexican) does that mean that Latinos are bad people and can't live in a more developed country? Because we either don't help them assimilate or give them too many freedoms. I'm not saying you act or think like this, but this is basically the people who you are siding with.

Well, I am an Arab Catholic (said it before) and while I stand up for Muslims I can't say I agree with Denmark's Laws, to have a happy society people must integrate and assimilate. If someone criticizes you for being a Welfare leach they can't be and shouldn't be considered racist. So I believe there must be firmer action towards (any)immigrants in any (any)countries. Not treat them like aliens, but firmly stand by integration. The problem I see mostly is that in places like Denmark or Norway or whatever that they're anti-Islam, calling Islam a bad religion and cult and whatnot, but not tackling the issue of poor immigration laws. You see it isn't Islam, just not trying hard enough for the cause of integration.

So I went to my fridge outside in the garage to grab a couple of beers that my bro put in there to chill up.

As soon as I open the fucking door to my garage the garage door (the big one that lets the cars in, lol) opens up. I'm thinking "WTF?!" I look for someone outside, inside their car possibly pressing the button to open garages in their car but still have no idea who. I walk out to get a better look, nothing. I then walk back into the garage and face the fridge to grab the beers, then all of the sudden my garage starts closing, and like a second afterwards goes back up. I was freaked out at this moment. I got the beers, then walked hastily inside. As soon as I opened the door the garage started closing again. I ended up just putting it off for now, and told my brother, and he thought I was a schizo lol.

Anyways I go upstairs a bit later and go to the bathroom. The bathroom is.. I guess near the garage somewhat, separated by walls of course. So as soon as I get in there, I hear the garage open again and once I am done pissing I go and get my brother because I was still like "wtf?" We ended up checking the garage out and it turns out that the garage control interface on the wall from inside was shorting out. Still haven't fixed it, but we hit it a few times like rednecks and it works.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cook or stonecraft?

Thanks all! Here's what I ended up going with:
Miner / Stonecrafter
Miner / Administration Skills
Military Dwarf -- 3 Axe, 2 dodge, 3 teach, 2 armor
Mason / Mechanic
Brewer / Cooker
Hunter -- 5 ambusher, 3 crossbow, 2 armor
Grower

Please leave feedback if you feel like it. I was hesitant to putting dodge on any of my dwarfs because I remember danger room and how they trained dodge very well...

EDIT: Wow my hunter sucks. He spent the 30 free silver bolts that he had to kill a badger boar, and it didn't even die. I put the axedwarf who was woodcutting to military and he finished off the badger. What bullshit.

EDIT 2: holy shit. I just got overran by fucking cave monkeys and river alligators. One guy was left, badly hurt, so I tried to make it epic by having him engrave one last time. The Engravement was him eating cheese. Will start again, this time I'm not bringing a hunter, lol.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cook or stonecraft?
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:48:17 pm »
Well I just started playing DF again (from like a few years ago) and I remember my 7 dwarf embark usually went like this:
5 miner
5 miner
5 carpenter, 5 wood cutter
5 mason, 5 mechanic
5 appraiser, maybe some judge of intent?
5 grower 5 brewer
Now my last guy I want him to be economic. So I was thinking about either having him be a stonecrafter, making rock crafts like mugs, as I do remember doing that a lot, or a cook, which will make it so my food gives happy thoughts and doesn't rot as fast, and possibly get me a good amount of money? What would be better economically, and for each, what secondary profession should either or have? Thanks all.

You'd have to first agree that his beliefs are even rational to begin with, to call them political."
How are all political views at least rational? And doesn't that make Terrorists rational? His political views is extreme anti-multiculturalism, which basically equates down to "All immigrants are bad, White supremacy, Christian Only, Racism."

Quote
What do you think about the "invasion of European countries by Muslims who use youth camps organized by white politicians to infiltrate?"
Racist and irrational.

IN labeling him a terrorist you're giving him exactly what he wants: legitimacy for his platform. Do you even realize that?
Why does it matter? Give him what he wants, I don't fucking care. Label him on what he is, a terrorist. I could give two shits if a mass-murderer wanted to be called a terrorist or murderer or martyr (for his cause).
And no, this guy sought to be a Crusader. All his latest articles refer to him as doing justice just as they did 500-800 years ago, in terms of the crusades. You remember the Crusades, don't you? Kill all Pagans and Jews and Muslims and Non-Christians. Though this guy basically was siding with Jews, he has the same punishment for others for being insane and self-conscious about penis size, death to random innocent people.

If this was a Muslim, even a lone-wolf, he would have been called a Terrorist no matter what. People saying he's just an insane Murderer are basically defending his actions.

Uh, no one is doing that. I could just as easily say people that are calling him a terrorist are validating his beliefs.

And we've already pointed out situations where Muslims are NOT automatically labeled as terrorists.

He's bad. No one's arguing that. But there's a big, big distinction between a lone wolf and other terrorism. Pointing out that distinction means we're supporting blowing people up? You're giving Glenn Beck a run for his money.
This is where the bomb part comes in. Since there was a bomb, and bombs are usually 99% classified to terrorism since you won't know who dies and is carried out it in secrecy, it doesn't matter what religion or ethnic background, he's a terrorist. Terrorism definition = "The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims" how does this not apply? It's hypocritical. double standards, and disrespectful and more supportive to call him an insane murderer, when he seems pretty sane, and does the same exact things a terrorist that identifies with Islam without saying anything about god.

Wow. This is all so messed up.

I am Catholic and my family is from Syria (95% Muslim there) and I can tell you Muslims get so much hate for no reason. My family has lived there forever and they are treated as exactly the same as anyone else, and has NEVER ever been harassed because of our religion. We have plenty of Muslim friends overseas and over here two of my best friends are Muslims (well, one is an Atheist).

But I have a question. How is this man NOT a terrorist? If this was a Muslim, even a lone-wolf, he would have been called a Terrorist no matter what. People saying he's just an insane Murderer are basically defending his actions. It doesn't matter if someone says "God told me to do this" right before he detonates a bomb, kills eight people, then goes and guns down 90 more, he is a no-good filthy extremist and will certainly find no peace in the afterlife. Condolences to any family affected.

If you're the type of person who needs structure and set goals to achieve in order to function, maybe this isn't the right type of game for you?

This, exactly, but the game is just too much fun once you have everything "going" for you.
