I decided to do an expedition to see what I have under fortress. The answer: two big caves (probably with giant cave spiders judging from webs) and something like magma pipe or something at around -85 levels bellow, I cant pinpoint it as it goes up for at least 7 levels. I think that for now I will settle on wood coal and cooper for weapons and armor. Cooper is the only thing I know it can be used to produce weapons. I didnt find iron, but I will dig some more and maybe I will get lucky. If all fails I will make freaking gold weapons and armor as I pund that there arequite a few vains deep under my fortress ;D.
It is spelled copper
Also, I do believe that copper war hammers would be pretty good, if you made some iron battleaxes or something as well

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Picks are apparently very good weapons
« on: September 12, 2010, 10:43:06 pm »
As far as I know, no one has really done any studies about using picks for weapons.
So I went and did  some tests in arena mode.
All tests have the specific weapon skill as unskilled, because you can't set mining skill when creating things in arena mode and I wanted to be fair
All skills unskilled and unarmored:
3 adamantine pick using dwarfs vs. 3 adamantine battle axe using dwarfs: The axedwarfs win with no casualties on their side.
3 adamantine pick using dwarfs vs. 3 silver war hammer using dwarfs: The hammerdwarfs win with one casualty
3 adamantine pick using dwarfs(I'll just call these guys miners for now on) vs. 3 silver whip using dwarfs: The lashers win with one casualty
Grand master fighter, armor user and shield user and unarmored.
Miners vs. 3 adamantine battle axe using dwarfs: The miners won with one casualty.
Miners vs. 3 silver war hammer using dwarfs: The hammerdwarfs one with one casualty
Miners vs. 3 silver whip using dwarfs: The miners won with... one casualty
Unskilled and armored:
Miners vs. 3 Adamantine battle axe using dwarfs:  The miners won with minimal injuries
Miners vs 3 Silver war hammer using dwarfs: The hammerdwarfs won with minimal injuries
Miners vs 3 Silver whip using dwarfs: The lashers won with no injuries.
Grand master fighter armor user and shield user and armored:
Miners vs 3 adamantine battle axe using dwarfs: The miners win with one casualty. The two remaining miners had no injuries
Miners vs 3 silver war hammer using dwarfs: The Hammerdwarfs won with no injuries
Miners vs 3 silver whip using dwarfs:  The lashers won with no casualties.

So picks seem at least slightly superior to battle-axes

Oh me, two succession forts forts at once?
Bring it on.

Holy hell, only one left? Can I abandon and reclaim?
Use the previous save, unless you really want to use this one.
I would say abandoning and then reclaiming is okay, but you would have to ask Jerm, although I say you should at least try to survive without doing that.

I just tested 15 v 15, bronze whips vs. bronze scourges.

Full adamantine armor: 1 whip dwarf was slain, two were knocked unconscious. Total slaughter.

Without armor: scourges won, three survivors, one of whom has had just about all his limbs broken.
Now try silver whips vs. steel scourges

So I just accidentally flooded part of the world with magma do to bad planning.
It is flowing really slow though
Bad planning? How is flooding the world with magma bad?
Because I started the flood  in the summer of the first year, before I really had anything set up except for farms.

Right now when you make a rock short sword it comes out made of wood, with all the properties of wood, thus making it useless.  This bug is being addressed and should be fixed in the next release.
No.
They are just like that in their name

(Magma does indeed pressure, it simply cannot pressure UP z-levels like water can.)
This isn't true. Drop magma and water (don't pump them) into L-bends.
With water, all the water in the upright part will pressure-pathfind through the water in the corner into the bottom.
With magma, magma in the upright part will only be able to get into the bottom by falling straight down into the corner when magma in the corner flows out into the bottom and leaves the corner at less than 7/7.
Which is why he said it can't pressure up

Each player can propose at the most one rule per turn. That rule automatically get the support from the player proposing it.

And I *SUPPORT* this rule.
I DISAGREE with the first part, and SUPPORT with the second part
I PROPOSE that if something is proposed, it is added to the rules for that turn. They do not carry over to further rounds unless they are one of the top two most liked rules
My Proposal: All votes for support or disagree must be somehow stylistically(visually) distinct from both each other and from the rest of the text that they appear in. This can either be colored, bolded, capitalized, or otherwise visually differentiated.
I SUPPORT this.

PROPOSAL:
Modify Rule 6 to read as follows:
All proposals which at the end of a turn have a greater number of supporters than disagreers shall be adopted.

And I SUPPORT this proposal.
[/quote]I SUPPORT this too.

No.
Anyway, Isn't there a layer of SMR at the bottom of the magma sea? Maybe that could hold a room in it.
Any rock on top of it is eaten by the SMR

On the subject of booze and farming.
I always have trouble in my forts with farming/brewing. Should I grow a crop in huge quantities for nothing but Booze? (example: Sweet Pods) I always have trouble balancing Plump helmet supply for eating, Plump Helmet supply for Brewing, and barrel supply. Also, can you grow Plants on dry stone, or must it still be muddied? If so, how do I make a good irrigation system?

Also, what should I bring on Embark/What skills should my dorfs have?
It must be muddied even if it's soil now
