DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Figured out what was wrong with my pump stack (thanks MechaGodzilla and Beeskee!) All I had to do was disassemble all the screw pumps and rebuild them (now with a hole below them) from the bottom up.

I had previously tried building them over a hole in the floor and failed. Turns out I needed another machine beneath it to register as a support (I guess?) before it would let me build over the hole. Furthermore, carving a hole in the floor after the pump was built didn't update the pump's information and allow it to work. So, in conclusion, the pumps in the pump stack must be built in a specific order.

Also noted earlier that windmills and gear assemblies must be built in a certain order to actually register as transferring power connections. Ugh, I'm going to have to be very careful in building the other pump stacks to ensure these machines don't start flooding the world with magma before I can setup the stop lever...

Yup yup! Glad to help!
I build alot of them, as my forts tend to fail in one way or another before I get them just so.
Ya always gotta build from the bottom up, or at least designate them to be built from the bottom up. The way my dwarves end up building sometimes winds me up with a stack of ten resting on an incomplete one ><
Just be sure to take your time and let em build up to a certain point before adding new stuff! ^^
Shutoff levers are always nice to have handy too

No new Foxes (a couple grew up) as my frame rate continues its swan dive.

Learned a very important lesson about the pump-stack design available on the wiki today. It's designed with digging in mind. I am building a pump stack as part of an elaborate suspended construction using walls and floors. Power does not want to transfer from one pump level to the other through the floor. Worse yet, I removed the construction (floor) tile beneath the appropriate side of the higher pumps and ensured it aligned with the proper part of the lower level pump. Still no power transfer (but I have a hanging pump now?)

Anyone build a pump stack using floors and walls instead of digging before that might be able to help me out? Am I just going to have to create some gear assemblage running 'round them? Do gear assemblies block intakes like stairs or anything?

Also, does anyone else crash when you save? Mine game crashes, although the save goes through just fine and loads up again fine. Been happening for a couple days now and it's starting to get bothersome.

I use both digging and constructions in my pump stacks.
I base my design like that on the wiki, primarily being the alternation of open and closed tiles so as to allow power transfer. stairs are tacked on the side on an as-needed basis.

Ill attempt a bit of a diagram here....

Floor 1

O O O O O
O # O % O
O X # # O
O # O % O
O # 8 # O
O O O O O

Floor 2

O O O O O
O # 8 # O
O X O % O
O # # # O
O # O % O
O O O O O

O=Walls    #=floors
%= Open Space   8= Door
X= Stairs
In this example, floor one pumps to the south, and floor 2 pumps to the north. You alternate these however many floors you need

As to gears blocking pumps...
I know that they dont block water coming out.... Ive had a ton of cases where areas have flooded as a result of it.
I dont think they block intake either.

Woah.... I just got an artifact worth more than 5 million...

Weaponsmith went secretive and grabbed adamantine, I hope for a sword or a spear but end up with a serrated disc. Not quite what I wanted, but its a HELL of alot nicer than a damn toy axe xD
Now gobbos will get a taste of epic disc!

Hmmm.... I updated the Memory file, and managed to boot up Stonesense, but it seems i have a problem. All I am getting is a light blue screen and and the white text (names, etc)

How can I get it to work?

But adamantine is said to be far harder than even steel. (adamantine stems from greek, i believe, for diamond or diamond-like)
Aluminum, on the other hand is very malleable and bends very easily.

And here I am bringing logic into DF myself xD

Think about it: how well do you think an aluminum sword would work?

Logic??
In my Dwarf Fortress!?

Had my smithy go fey on me and make an aluminum short sword. The thing is worth a ton. Could someone tell me how effective it would be in the hands of a soldier?

Oh, and my massive stockpile of massiveness is full again. MOAR BINS TO MAKE.

I dont think it'd work well at all. I think that its lacking damage data in the raws or something. (someone more knowledgable could prolly tell ya better)
Im pretty sure that you just got a shiny decoration and a Legendary Weaponsmith.

He proceeded to kill one miner and then run off the edge of the map before I could do anything.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Smoothing question.
« on: August 23, 2010, 10:39:07 am »
check what kind of floor it is. If its a soil (like loam, clay, sand, etc) then you cant smooth it at all.
Smoothing requires no materials to smooth stone, only that the floor is a rock or ore.

Only way to "smooth" soil floors and walls is to construct them out of other stone.

Your killinator needs a roof.

Yep yep. One of my many unfortunate oversights. ><;

Now though.... now its time for Killinator Mk II - now with roofs!
