Assuming you already have prospector then I would say just keep searching. You will find what you want eventually and anywhere with magma generally has a lot of gems. For sand you can easily mod the game so that ALL soil types can be used to harvest sand. All you need to do is add the SOIL SAND tag to each type in the raw files. I usually get rid of aquifers while I am at it as well.
Without a better computer thats about as much as you can do.
As for the uber armour. It really makes the game boring. Masterwork steel is already enough. If you really want to have fun with adamantine, then make some armour and reclaim it with an adventurer. I once made a marksdwarf with pure adamantine gear. It wasn't even masterwork, just plain. He had plate armour, 3 sets of chainmail, boots, socks, quivers, shirts, dresses, cloaks, turbans... He was kitted out to the teeth.
He was unkillable. He once collapsed unconsious in the middle of 12 wolves and I got spammed with about 20 announcement pages of wolf bites glancing off my face before my guy came to again. He once bashed a dragon with his crossbow so hard that it flew backwards 10 tiles into a giant cave spider and hit with so much force that BOTH of them exploded.
