Can one lever be linked to multiple upright spike traps?

Do trees burn in magma in 31.25 or do I have to cover my magma reservoir floor with constructed floor tiles like I did with my water reservoir?

Am I under the right impression that building upright spike traps and linking them to levers + repeat is more effective than regular traps because there is no need to reload? What else can be linked to levers like that? Menacing spikes? Serrated discs?

Dig AT the water level, not below or above. Above, you will need pumps to run it. Below, water pressure will cause an instant flood. What you do is you dig right up to the water, with one tile of rock left intact. Build a drawbridge behind it and link it a lever far away, safe inside your fortress. Then, smooth and carve fortification in the final tile. Now you have a drawbridge that controls water flow without using pumps.

After that, it's just a matter of mining that 1-tile wide path to where your hospital is, but at least one z-level below it. Then, channel down from the hospital floor onto the water tunnel below and build a well over it. Additionally, consider putting a floor all along the reservoir's tunnel in order to avoid the chance that a tree will grow there and block the flow of water.

If your hospital is below the cavern water level, you still dig at water level, but later on build stairs down, up/down, and finally stairs up before resuming the tunnel. This will bring the water level down without causing instant floods caused by high water pressure.

And yes, the most reliable source of water, by far, is cavern water.

Do they have to path to that block diagonally or can they get to it horizontally/vertically, too?

Why is my weapon trap pale? Did too many goblins walk over it, setting off all 10 bronze serrated discs? How do I reset it? Do they discs disappear after being used?

It's probably covered in blood or some other fluid. DFhacks cleanmap will take care of that, and is a must for any murderous fortress that doesn't want to die a meta-death.

So how are weapon traps reloaded?

It never ceases to amaze me how much people focus on the military. You don't really need more than 1 military dwarf. Your defenses should work without a military. It's really not that hard to do.

So I breached the wrong part of the cotton candy pillar and the circus attacked. Luckily, I had a drawbridge ready to block the only way in and I threw the switch in time. The circus stayed near the bridge for a while. Now it appears to be gone. I opened the drawbridge again. No attacks. Plugged the cotton candy hole, though. Did the circus leave town?

Greaves protect all parts of the leg that low boots don't.

So low boots and greaves make high boots obsolete?

My civ can only make low boots, not high boots. How do I protect lower legs?

I want to try one with magma myself but its a headache to even start to plan out.

I've done it before. It's not worth it.

Thanks for helping. that fort died a goblin-based death. i currently have a cave with admantine. in a similar situation (Just with less fuel) having Flux+Silver+Lots of gems. Any ideas for SAFE Admantine Mining (Keeping FB's ect out of my area)

There really is no safe way without finding out where the hole is via save-scumming. Safest way I can think of is digging a 1x1 tunnel to the adamantine and digging a few blocks at a time, then dumping them into your fortress. Make sure you build a magma-safe drawbridge on your side of that tunnel with magma-safe mechanisms. Link it to a lever very close to your meeting area. That way, if you do get the message, you can immediately seal the area with that lever. You'll lose the miner assigned to it, of course. Even safer is to get the miner mining it with the gate closed behind him. When you want to retrieve the mined rocks, stop the mining operation, open the gate and retrieve the rocks. Then restart with that one dwarf sealed in the shaft.

DF Gameplay Questions / Forbid trap corridor?
« on: April 20, 2011, 06:57:22 pm »
I have a trap corridor against enemies. However, dwarf's will naturally go there if that is the only path to something interesting outside, like fish in a lake, dropped enemy belongings, triggered traps, etc... I know I can simply create a burrow that encompasses my entire fortress, but this is very time-consuming, especially with multi-level fortress. All I want to do is forbid one little square on one floor. Doing this by forbidding a door unfortunately also causes some enemies to not see it as a path into the fortress, which is a must if they are to navigate my spiral of magma doom.

Are ground tiles adjacent to wall tiles below them form an airtight barrier? I know that enemies and dwarfs can walk through horizontally diagonal walls:

 XXXXX
X00000

can be passed.

XXXXXX
X00000

is airtight.

What about diagonally?

Is:

WWWWWWW
WFFFFFFFFW
WFFFFFFFFW
WFFFFFFFFW
WWWWWWW

airtight or do I have to build a floor tile (F) over each of the wall tiles (W, one z-level level down)?
