Spoiler: Android Logo (click to show/hide)

So I tried reinstalling recently and most things work fine except for installing Box64, because the repositories seem to move around.

I got it to work from the precompiled debs here, but they don't actually have box64-arm compiled, and I had get it from the CN mirror.

I was looking forward to the new UI, but I have to agree; without full keyboard controls this game has no flow state. But even independent of that, the new UI has many strange and unintuitive decisions. Escaping out of menus doesn't have consistent behavior. Scroll wheel is dependent on your mouse location. There's a lot of complaint about the new announcement system and how reports disappear.

I don't mind the new hotkeys, but the issue is that you need the mouse so the hotkeys are inaccessible. But even without hotkeys, the new UI is even more inconsistent than the old UI.

Given the state of the current UI, I think it would be a good idea to offer old UI.

It might be interesting to run the numbers on how many people playing Classic (after it is released) use the mouse.

I would like to second this.

There was no reason to remove this feature.

I assume "don't bother the necromancers until we're ready" is part of the rules.

I'd also suggest having at least one biome be Joyous Wilds, since that should be fun, but not as FUN as evil biomes.

Also probably a place with at least some trees.

Congratulations! I did this twice when I had more time, but it's still quite the achievement.

Can't really think of anything to add, but then again I don't have much experience with community games.

Reddit does not really retain community IMO like these forums, so I want some kind of in-between. . a dream, anyways

Have to agree with this one. I don't think I've seen any community games take off on Reddit in the past four or so years (or maybe I've just missed them?), and formatting the text of a report is, quite frankly, horrible with Reddit's posting interface.

Yeah, your right. As moderator, it seems to be hard to get people to continue playing. Usually a player takes too long or doesn't show up, and things derail.

The new reddit posting has inline photos which I hope will help, but it's still astonishing that they're still lacking basic features that forums have had for ever.

There was some talk about making a dedicated Succession repository site, with Github-like qualities. Also because DFFD is down (for now).

A tl;dr section would be good. I'll add one as well.

Hey all, given the upcoming steam release and assumed influx of new players, and as the moderator of the dead /r/succession subreddit, I thought it prudent to put together a beginner's guide to succession forts (formatting focused on reddit, but otherwise agnostic).

But I can't think of everything, so I'm hoping to get some feedback from the rest of the community. Feedback is requested if I'm missing anything, or should elaborate on something more:

Quote
Welcome to the Succession subreddit for Dwarf Fortress.

**What is a Succession game?**
A Succession game, also known as a Bloodline game, is an unofficial asynchronous multiplayer mode of playing Dwarf Fortress. In a Succession game, players take turns playing with the same save file, passing the save file between each other at the end of each of their turns.

The most classical form of the Succession game is the Succession Fortress, in which each player plays in Fortress Mode for one in-game year, before passing the fortress on to the next player, however, Succession mode can be done partially or solely in Adventure mode as well.

Note that everything in this document is a general guideline. Rules are often established at the beginning of each fortress which may override the general rules outlined here.

**How do I join a Succession game?**
To join a Succession game, post something to the effect of “I would like to sign up for a turn as Overseer.” and the person running the game should add you to the end of the queue and reply to you to confirm that you have been added.

When your turn is reached, the previous player should ping you or send you a message, with a link to the save file. You should reply **as soon as possible** whether you will be able to take your turn and finish one in-game year within **one or two weeks**, or whether you are too busy and your turn should be skipped. If you skip your turn, you may request to be added to the end of the queue.

By default, when you complete your turn, you will be added to the end of the queue.

**How do I play a Succession game?**
In a Succession game, you play as the Overseer of the fortress for the current year. As the Overseer, you are also represented by a single in-game dwarf who is nicknamed after you. If a dwarf is not yet named after you, choose one to act as your representative in the fortress. Play to the best of your ability, and try not to kill any named dwarves.

Note that if your named dwarf dies, your turn does not end. Instead, you may choose another dwarf to name after yourself as your successor, usually with a name suffix such as “II”, “III”, etc., as they are often the child of the former overseer, if possible.

It is customary to write an **Overseer’s Log** which records the experience of your in-game dwarf over the course of their year as Overseer. The Overseer’s Log should be written from the perspective of your dwarf and record important or notable events and decisions the Overseer has made, as well as occasional day-to-day experiences. Log entries should usually be accompanied by screenshots of key events or descriptions. Make sure to date your long entries with the in-game date.

To post both images and text on Reddit, it is recommended to use the new Reddit posting system, which allows you to insert inline images into your post.

Examples of notable events:
*Sieges and their resolution
*Forgotten beast arrivals and fights
*Artifacts and their creation
*Accidents and deaths.
*Breaching the caverns
*Major expansion of fortress infrastructure

Log entries should be posted **every few months**, often seasonally. You should not post only at the end of your turn.

In Succession games, players and bystanders often request to be “dwarfed”, whereby an in-game dwarf is nicknamed after that person. Players and bystanders can request specific dwarves, and it is the responsibility of the current Overseer to nickname the dwarves.

If you are looking for things to do, it is common to start or continue a megaproject, which may or may not be completed on your turn. Later Overseers may or may not continue any projects you have started.

At the end of your turn, zip your save, upload it to a file-sharing website, and post your final log entry, along with a link to the file. Make sure you ping or message the next Overseer in the queue to inform them of their turn.

When you are not the Overseer, you can comment on the latest Overseer post, either in-character as your named dwarf, or out of character commentary. You can also request for your dwarf to change professions or carry out actions, and hope that the current Overseer carries out your wishes.

**How do I start a Succession game?**
To start a Succession game, generate a world and find a location to embark. Your initial post should have a screenshot of the world, your embark location, and a backstory about the world, why your dwarves have set out to start their own fortress and what goals they hope to achieve. It is a good idea to look through Legends Mode before you embark to help with writing the backstory.

As the founder of the Succession game, you are responsible for setting any rules, such as how long each turn lasts, acceptable mods and utilities, and the like. You are also responsible for maintaining the Overseer Queue, which should be included in the initial post, and continue to be edited as the game goes on.

The initial post should not contain any gameplay; the first Overseer Log should be a new post.

Thanks!

Ooh new idea, which I might run if not used:

Every year, each overseer gets a single z-level to build on (one deeper than the year before). They can't modify the floors of previous overseers, but can enqueue job orders and the like.

9
Post to join.

Narrative concept: it is the Age of Steam after all. Water/magmaworks? Cast obsidian?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You are Cy-Cat, stalker of the night, predator of birds, terror of rats and other small beasts. You are the Monarch of the Guttersprawl, and all flee before your approach, lest they taste the bite of your razor sharp claws.

At least you were, before you were abducted by one of the Old Gods. You don't remember much of what happened, the flash of a surgical gown, a knife, but you woke up in the gutter, wet and miserable, the world having lost its color.

Literally. Your eyes, once shining orbs that surveilled your kingdom, striking fear into those who saw them, now see only in shades of amber. The image blurs as you try to look at the rain, degrading in resolution as you try to see the detail.

They robbed you of everything. You're unsteady on your feet, second-guessing the images your eyes are feeding you, a half-second behind reality. You can't hunt like this. You can't rule your domain with this mockery of eyes. And worst of all, they didn't even give you retractable razor claws.

You stumble and splash back down into the flowing water, a fallen royal. You stare as the debris drifts by on the current, trying to identify them before they drift away.

You don't know what day it is. Your vision jumps and jitters like a startled mouse. If you're ever going to get back to who you once were, it's going to be an uphill climb.

What do you do?

follow the brighter leyline

You follow the leyline, but it's difficult to trace your way though the winding alleys of the Sink. Roads don't necessarily travel in straight lines, but the glowing beam only goes in one direction. You find yourself in various dark side streets, warm mist rising from the gutters, and you soon notice someone with a pair of enchanted arms following you.

You look like an easy mark, wandering alone in these back streets. But you can show them. You can blast them out of existence with your new enhancements and they will rue the day they ever thought to try to jump you.

Or you can show them how fast you can run away.

Or maybe they're friendly? Unlikely, here in the Sink. You can count the number of friends you have here on the back of your hand. But if they're not here to jump you, maybe you can ask them how to get where you want to go.

Smash my bottle in frustration at its being empty then look around that restaurant for a back door or window that I could potentially get into.

The bottle shatters you slam it into the ground, shards flying every which way. As the last tinkles of the glass falling to the alley floor fade away, you notice a small chip on the shard that was once hidden by the label. It looks like an infochip that you can scan if you had the right protocols. Might be used to track production? You pocket the shard with the chip.

Stumbling deeper into the back alley, you notice that the back door of the building, with a handwritten sign prominently posted to the inside saying "DO NOT PROP OPEN", is propped open by a bucket of tempura batter. To your sight, camera above the door seems to dead, and someone has jammed a piece of metal into the lock to make the door think it's still closed.

This is a cakewalk. You can just stroll on in.

Talk to the tree, claiming that I am Mister Hooman requesting an update from my subordinate.

You swagger up to the big shiny tree, ignoring the dizziness in your head, and pull the worm out of your breast feathers. It wriggles a bit but you manage to plug it into the hole.

Locke is there to greet you. It's always Locke. You can count on your feathers the number of times Locke wasn't the first ghost you'd talk to after plugging in. You put on your best human impression and prepare to bluff your way in.

Unfortunately, "Mister Hooman" is not authorized to access this device, even though he does very human things like pay taxes and have depression. You puzzle around a bit, doing human things like "ask to see Locke's manager", but none of it seems to be working.

Maybe the headache is getting to you.

Anyways, Locke is saying something that you can't understand because you don't speak human, but it sounds like when humans try to fight you for your food. Maybe you should give up on this one? Or maybe you should try harder. After all, you've dealt with stubborn Lockes before.

If the humans have ghosts in them, that makes them easy to keep track of. Check that the coast is clear, and infiltrate the building.
Perhaps there's a small opening with a Locke which the humans themselves don't use?

You fly to the building, bright and loud in your vision. The roof of the building is mostly flat, but strewn with what appears to be a bunch of electrical equipment, including one of those giant glowing metal trees the humans seem to be very fond of putting up everywhere. The bright lights get you a little dizzy, but the ghost itself is somewhere deeper inside the building.

Luckily, no one seems to be out on the roof. You poke around the maze of machinery, and prying open a rubber stopper you find a hole that your worm can use to talk to ghosts. It's directly under the metal tree, and when you look into the light you feel a little nauseous.

There's two small sheds on the roof as well, both with holes for your worm, and holes next to doors usually means meeting Locke. One looks like it goes downwards, while the other looks like it would be a small room.

Maybe you should try talking with your worm?

Drink that bottle of alcohol I have, if it turns out to be empty look through the buildings until I see a bottle that isn't.

Your bottle of alcohol is empty. You are completely dry. You can't remember the last time you were like this.

You also spent all your credits, so buying another bottle is not in the cards.

Looking through the windows you can't exactly see any bottles of alcohol. Only the corpo shit have built in trackers, and you doubt you'd set eyes on a bottle like that in a place like this. But you do see the thermals and computers, and there's a fridge in the building you're next to that says that a shipment of Sapporo came in last week. It's a big fridge, and the place looks like a restaurant with a reasonable sit-down place up front. The payment kiosk is locked up tight, though you can place an order over the air if you had any credits.

Other fridges seem to be around, but none are smart enough to know what's inside. A couple with a cold can each with their dinner in the building across the way.

That's all you can see from your alley, but there's a corner store a little up the street that you go to pretty often.
