DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Is beekeeping as bad as it looks?
« on: June 02, 2022, 04:33:44 am »
It is possible to have a small fort subsist solely* on bees and bee products, but then you're limited to a population of like 20.

*unfortunately royal jelly is liquid and requires a solid base. Quarry bush leaves are suitable to make the most frustrating food industry possible.

Huh, didn't realize that ore weight would be such an issue; I request ores because no matter how many bars I request they usually bring way too few. 4 bars per ore gives me net more bars than requesting the bars themselves.

Other than that, lye because it's a pain to make (mostly the bucket > barrel transfer step). Granted, instruments are also a pain to make, but I haven't used them much.

Is there a possibility to change the zoom interpolation? For small tilesets, the edges are antialiased, which I think is unintended behavior.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: "Claims from Afar" Artifact thieves
« on: May 26, 2022, 02:42:21 pm »
How old are your world? In my 125 year worlds, I only get thieving plots maybe once every few years. Thieving ambushes (where they try to sneak in and steal, as opposed to corrupting a citizen) are super rare and I basically never get those.

All I get are poets.

I display all my artifacts prominently in my public library, and things get stolen all the time, but sometimes I can intercept the thief before they run off with the artifact.

Honestly it's one of my most favorite interactions in the game, along with the interrogations. Sure, I lose a dwarf to zealous justice from time to time, but that's the price of being weak-willed and treasonous. I also get to interrogate ghosts, which is great.

Since I don't make vaults, I never have a wretched hive of thieves and villains descend to steal artifacts all at the same time. If you do want to open the vault, maybe interrogate all your dwarves to ensure their loyalty before the vault is opened? They'll confess to anything, even crimes you're not interrogating them for.

...some worlds I don't have enough thieves.

DF Suggestions / Long List of Mostly Small Suggestions
« on: April 28, 2022, 09:02:29 am »
Mostly Small Suggestions
  • Autodump toggles for feather, cartilage, hair, scale, nail, etc.
  • Infinite Bees (as finite bees is currently underwhelming compared to the infinite soil nutrition)
  • Mill details to choose which plant to mill (or split into mill dye, flour, etc.)
  • View dwarf preferences during noble nomination
  • Less deadly beatings
  • Make orientation/marriage preferences more visible to the player (does love/romance/lust/family personality traits even reflect dwarf orientation? I should probably check)
  • Filter trade goods (for buying and selling)
  • Ability to abort loading creature definitions / two week wait period before game begins and exit to main menu
  • Quick export all detailed maps
Mostly Small Suggestions
  • Prison location/burrow instead of only chains and cages.
  • Track relationships past death (former spouse, etc.)

The completed files are literally in the second link.

I have never a quickfort in my life, but I modified my df2html script to spit out quickfort blueprints (which worked surprisingly well as only only designated tiles have a non-black background)

Test it out, reply if it doesn't work, if it does work then donate the money to Toady or whoever.

As an experimental report, I have a pure vanilla pop-cap 50 fort running for 20 years, and I've had maybe two marriages and some immigrant couples. None of the younger generation have married, and only one pair have become lovers. I'm not using honeymoon suites, but they're living a fairly relaxed life. Lots of close friends and kindred spirits, but very few lovers and marriages.

Dwarves are generated with only a 75% chance of ever marrying the opposite gender and producing children, so that's quite a bar to clear. I also don't know if the orientation/commitment degree is reflected in the personality description.

There's also a ban close family marriages; I'm not sure if anyone ever specifically calculated the distance required for marriages to occur.

DFhack can do gaydar and force marriages, and modifying the raws could also help.

Hmm, is there a documentation for keyboard shortcuts for navigation? I worked out -/= for zoom (works on a different map) and </> for z-levels, but are there more commands? Such as keyboard panning, that's a good trick.

I noticed that you were looking for maps that failed on +/- in the Github issues; this and this both fail on +/- for me.

This is much appreciated, thanks you delicious friend!

Bug report: Pressing + or - seems to set X/Y to NaN/NaN, forcing a refresh.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Press cake
« on: March 21, 2022, 07:45:17 am »
Ah.  Thank you for pointing that out.  The problem, of course, is that I can't allow rock nut press cakes to be cooked without also allowing the rock nut paste, which is needed for soap production.

Judicious use of stockpiles could help with this, if you're fine with press cake x4 lavish meals.

I'm a scientist, not a monster!

Fill out ethical review form for review by the ethical review board.

We also need replicates for our experiment.

Check on number of sisters.

Science can't be done without funding. Labs are expensive!

Apply for research grants from parents.

AnySoftKeyboard (open-source available through f-droid) has a "terminal" layout, which includes the numberpad and arrow keys/page up, etc. Perhaps that could be used to not need the additional button bindings?

I haven't tried AnySoft, but with Termux you can customize the topbar keyboard, so you don't need to put in multiple buttonpresses to get commonly used keys (>, <, +, -, etc.).

And I wouldn't have tried running it on the phone if you I didn't read your post first. It was very helpful to get it up and running!
