DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Larger playing area?
« on: June 09, 2012, 07:33:22 am »
I just started playing Dwarf Fortress again after about a year, and I recall a much larger "playing area", to build on. Am I crazy? Has it always been this small? It seems my hunters have barely anywhere to go without going up a few levels. Is there a setting or a mod that'll make the area bigger? Thanks.

That might be because you have embarked in a steep or cliffy area.

In one of my first fortresses I got lots of depictions of the taming of the giant eagles by whoever it was ...

Breeding birds could lead to eggsplosion. ^^

There are about four or five different female birds in my current fortress and I already have hundreds of eggs.

Sounds like something was blocking the way, hindering final construction. Try to suspend and unsuspend the construction (q).

I have had similar problems every now and then. If one of your workers is just standing around after finishing any job it is most likely because he has lost his way back because of wrong stair/ramp construction. Especially with ramps it is easy to render them useless by mining out the supporting wall on the wrong side.
Also designing stairs by mistake as only down stairs instead of up/down stairs occurrs every so often. :)

Oh wait, I am also very good with constructing floors on stairs to seal off a cavern and forgetting about that this also seals off the stairs back to the upper level leaving my poor mason standing lost until I finally notice that he is thirsty and starving. :D

You can demand items during negotiations, the next year caravan may bring them. That would be too late in this case ...

Because of moody demands and and overall need for bags to store items I always order all sorts of thread, cloth und leather (and other useful things) from the caravans, just in case ... (You can also order animals.)

15000 is some internal counter, probably to hold count of use ups of thread through suturing or of soap through washing.
15000 thread is one item of thread and 10000 cloth is one item of cloth.

You can only spin wool into yarn threads and then make cloth at a loom. You get wool by shearing an animal (currently according to the wiki only llamas, alpacas, sheep, and trolls.
The hair that you get from butchering other animals can only be spun into thread but not be woven into cloth.

With some luck you might get either wool or cloth or a shearable animal from the next caravan.

And don't get confused by the numbers - those are only three pieces of thread and cloth each. That's not too much. :)

folks-

I've had "collect clay" designated at my magma kiln for several years now. the kiln is powered. I have a potter. I have item hauling on. I have (what I think) is a clay collection zone designated. Yet no one collects clay. Anyone got any suggestions here? Commonly forgotten tricks for this situation?

If the clay zone is covered in underground grasses, then your dwarves can't collect any clay.  Try pasturing a grazer or two in the collection zone.
Easiest thing to prevent plant growth is to build a floor grate on the clay collection zone. Guarantees no plants and free access to the clay or sand.

When DF 1.0 comes out, we may all have computers holodecks able to run it!

Dwarf Fortress: using Virtual Reality to display ASCII.

I suppose it would look like the beautiful 3D rendered ASCII art that some people have made for ADOM:

Oddly enough, I rarely ever seen any of my dwarves actually sitting down at tables and eating. They all seem to be content with sitting inside my stockpiles and eating directly out of the barrels. Ungrateful peons.

At least with tilesets it's easy to spot. You can even see what kind of food they are eating because they put it on the table.
