As for DFHack modules, i dunno this is in .text section and as far as I understand DFHack is .data centered?

Yes, most or all of DFHack's games are done in the .rdata or .data sections.  But there is little difference in tweaking the .text section.  You just have to change the section to read-write beforehand and back to read-only after.  I know how to do that; it's just a couple of API calls.  So if DFHack doesn't already have the ability, I can add it.

Or install Games for Windows Live.

That's kind of like banging your head against the wall to stop the pain from cutting your finger.

Well, it makes Steam not suck any more.

DF Modding / Re: Some questions about the DFLiquid tool in DFHack.
« on: June 27, 2010, 01:45:13 pm »
I tried doing a search, which came up with literally nothing, and I did read the readme on the thread for DFHack and still have some questions. I'm playing around with it a bit on the arena.

1. What does the flow bits only function do?

Be advised that I have not used this tool; I am only looking at the source code, which I have not studied in detail.  Anything I say here may be totally wrong.

It looks like "flow bits only" makes dfliquid not place new water or magma on the map.  It makes it only affect the flow status of existing liquid.

Quote
2. Is there any way to change the size of the block when you use a block cursor?

It appears not.  It fills the entire 16x16 map block that the cursor is in.  It would be really cool to do it to the currently selected designation rectangle, but it looks like dfhack doesn't support that.

Quote
3. After you place some static liquid, how do you get it flowing again?

At a guess, position the cursor and use "dfliquids f f+ block".  Or "dfliquids f f+ point" to do one tile at a time.

Quote
4. What exactly does the 'don't change flow state (read state in flow mode)' function mean? Also, whats flow mode?

It seems to mean that the "f." option prints the value of both flow flags (flow bits) for each tile in the 16x16 map block the cursor is in, instead of forcing those flags to be true (flowing liquid) or false (standing liquid).

"flow mode" controls whether all the liquid on the map block under the cursor gets set to flowing liquid or standing liquid or unchanged from its current state.  The default is "f+" making it flowing liquid, which is probably what you always want.

Quote
5. The readme on the DFHack thread said that I can remove liquids using the DFLiquid tool, how do I do that? Besides turning it into obsidian.

Maybe by setting liquid amount to 0.  Try "dfliquids w 0 block".

Incidentally, you might experiment with the undocumented command line options "column", "starruby", and "darkhide".  Of course they might break your game, they must be undocumented for a reason.

Some work, e.g. The Nameless Mod.

For others, I had to download an illegal copy of the non-Steam .exe from some random website.

Here's a random forum thread about this problem.

But I guess a lot of this is fixed by now, according to some other threads.

Anyway, back when, it truly frustrated me.

I found flOw quite relaxing, though too simplistic.  It's atmospheric / ambient, simple controls, simple gameplay, and it's very hard to actually lose.

Play it here or here or other places.

I found that downloading the flash .swf file to my desktop, then double-clicking that to run it, then pressing F11 to maximize it, was the most comfortable way to play.  That's because if you're playing in a browser window, you lose control if you move the mouse cursor off of the flash window area.

Never heard about Valve forcing someone to put DRM on it, except for Steam and VAC that is.

I'm thinking of Deus Ex.  I recently got pissed off because they moved the normal deusex.exe into deusex.dll, and put a small DRM module as deusex.exe, which causes mods to not install.  This on a game where you almost need to mod it to get it happy with modern computers.

Im tempted to buy eufloria, seems interesting, anyone tried it?

I liked Eufloria but got a bit bored around the 20th level.  Decided to take a break and haven't returned yet.

It's a relaxing game.  Very abstract.  It reminds me of flOw in a few ways.

It's about half of an RTS.  There is no tech tree, almost no building construction, and no way to select what kind of units to create.  You will not have a standard build order, as the starting situation varies too much.

The levels are procedurally generated from a set of parameters, so they are semi-random, which is nice for replayability.  But the final half of each level is always the same.  Exterminate the opposition right down to the last unit.

Technically, you can zoom way in on the action, but you end up spending all your time zoomed out as far as possible because that's the only place you can control the action.  So you're looking at fights between colored pixels.

There is too much click-and-drag.  The thing that annoys me the most is that you can't set waypoints to gather newly generated units.

I spent $20 on a package deal with it and four other games I'm not interested in, and don't regret the purchase.  I bought from Cipher Prime, so I don't know if Valve made the authors put DRM into the Steam version.  Cipher Prime's doesn't have DRM.

If you have a particular need for reveal2, I can dig out the necessary addresses for .08.

Really, though, I want to retire reveal2 in favor of the one in DFHack, as I think it works better, and it is reversible.

Extreme apologies.  The offset for .08 SDL is 008EB894.  I was off by one.

The offset for .08 legacy is 008E0EF5, but I haven't tested that.

As previously stated, the offset for .06 SDL is 0090D664.

The offset for .06 legacy appears to be 00900A15.  Untested.

I have not yet made any effort to make a utility for this.  I want to start making DFHack modules, but I need to sort out the git SCM tool first.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Workshops
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:39:17 pm »
I use a workhall, as I think traffic moves much better without doorways.  In the rare case that I have a mood that's going to fail, I can still build a wall around the affected workshop.  I leave a one-tile gap between shops for just this reason.

In .06, the byte at 0090D664 controls the number of starting dwarves.  Use a debugger / cheat program / memory editor to set it to something between 7 and 255, before entering the "Prepare for the journey carefully" phase of Embark.

This is no longer true in .08. All I'm getting is Value = ??

Is there a new address for this?

Yeah, looks like it's 008EB893.

I'm surprised that it moved so far.  Maybe a different link order?

Anyway, I suppose I should make a utility to locate and set this byte.

Has anyone tried setting it to less than 7, for a hermit challenge?

And... probably should start a new thread instead of piggybacking on this one.

DF Modding / Re: Reveal2.exe for .31.06?
« on: June 17, 2010, 05:32:01 am »
I recommend using the reveal module in DFHack.

It works better and is updated for new versions very quickly.

As the author and maintainer of Reveal2, I consider it to be superseded by DFHack.

Reveal2 uses a core module that does not have the source code available, and the author has disappeared from the DF scene.

EDIT: Ninja'ed!

Or try forbidding all constructed tables and traction benches from the stocks menu.  I haven't tried that myself, but it should work.
