DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bedroom Furniture: How much is necessary?

Don't know about dormitories, but they work in a 3X5 shared bedroom with 6 dwarfs.
What's a shared bedroom?  Is that where the bedroom designations all overlap and so the cabinet is considered part of each one?

DF Modding / Re: Intensifying Mod ver 0.15

I'm thinking of trying out your mod, but given my love of volcanoes, your sig worries me.  What's all this about eruptions?

Also, a few questions about the crops (I've thought a lot about crops):
-Is it intentional for plump helmets to have a growth cycle of only 1 month?  I suppose the small cluster-size should make up for it, but I'm curious as to what prompted this.  Is it to make a "quick and easy" crop for immediate use?  What about its use in dyeing cloth?  Does it have to be processed before it can be dye?

-What does the "1+potash" mean for the drink-value of sugarcane?

-Pig tails grow in 3 months and yield 2 thread, as opposed to Rope-reed growing in 9 months and yielding 1 thread.  This would seem to give pig-tails 6 times the yield of Rope-Reed.  Intentional?

Do you have any plans for addressing the seeming inconsistency of sunless underground crops being limited by seasons while exposed above-ground crops can be grown any time anywhere?

No, the walls were a good idea, don't abandon the bounding walls.  Floors will catch water just like the walls would, but with the added risk of idiotic dwarves walking onto them and getting washed off the platform.

Try this design (you can of course make it as wide as you want):
Code: [Select]
WW..WW
~W##W~
 W++W
 #++#
  ++

This I did not know.  Thanks.  Maybe on my next fort, I'll experiment with potash and see if I can feed 100 dwarves on 10 tiles of farmland.

Large stack-size will certainly be useful for my stockpiles.  Using quarry-bushes, and Dwarven Syrup, I should be able to churn out 100-unit roasts.  Maybe.  That's why I should test it out.

Oh, I hadn't thought of constructing bounding walls AFTER the grates were in place.  Nice!  The tops of those walls will catch water though and so there could be some slight spillage onto the floors beyond, but it won't really be an issue unless you hate the color brown, since it should drain through the grates or evaporate fairly quickly.

I think that constructing "Downward Stairs" allows for a walkable floor that lets fluids through it, so you could try those instead of or in conjunction with grates in order to get past the falls.

Theres the Map...
That looks epic!  I don't think I've ever seen falls that huge before.

Any chance I could have the save?

My experience with waterfalls (mainly stemming from an aquifer that intersected a cavern) has been that grates are your friends.  They prevent flowing water from washing your dwarves over the edge, and can be placed fairly quickly even in the path of falling water.  They can't unfortunately provide connections for further construction, but you should be able to do something like
Code: [Select]
WW...WW   <- Walls with tunnel opening
~ #+#~    <- Grate-Floor-Grate, ~ is falling water
  #+#

1 unit of plant-matter yields 5 units of booze, so the maximum amount any barrel can hold is 25 units, which is the quantity you get it in from caravans.  This leads to a huge variance in the actual storage capacity of a stockpile.

I did the forbidding of the booze from the stockpile menu where each booze-type is sorted by stack-size, so it wasn't all THAT difficult, and then I just mass-reclaimed the whole booze stockpile when my free stock was exhausted.

I do the singularity-stockpile for rocks because they are too numerous for conventional stockpiles, but for everything else I stick to the active stockpiles.

That was a double-entendre, by the way.  The economy was "fixed" in the same manner you might "fix" a pet that you didn't want having any babies.

Chest?  That thing that held coins in 40d before the economy was fixed in 2010.  :)
If only pets could be fixed in a similar way...

But anyways, I am glad I will be able now to furnish my rooms more efficiently.

Ah, thanks for that information.  I think I can probably just put cabinets in all of my military-dwarf's rooms so that they'll be able to stash their conflicting garb.

Do naked children who own their own room put their claimed clothing into cabinets?  Do they do this when they grow up?  Is there any way to get unsightly child-claimed clothing out of sight without having to hide it?

Lastly, will a cabinet or chest ever fill up?  Will a dwarf ever need more than one?  How do married couples affect this?

I recently ran into a situation where my fort's alcohol stockpiles were down to about 200, and so it was time to brew up another batch of booze.  After getting back up to 800, I noticed that my Still was severely cluttered with something like 15 barrels of booze.  This bothered me.  I checked on my stockpiles and saw that my booze-stockpile was in fact full.  "How could this be?" I thought.  When I first made my "new and improved" kitchen/dining area I had filled up the booze-stockpile with over 1,000 drinks, but now it seemed to be overflowing with a mere 800.

The answer to my puzzlement is that approximately half of the barrels in my stockpile contained less than 10 units of booze in them.  Several contained only 3 units.  This is unacceptable!  If there are open barrels of the drink you're looking for, you should drink from THOSE ones first!  Otherwise you'll end up with a "full" stockpile filled with half-empty barrels.

Is there any way to get your dwarves to finish near-empty barrels BEFORE they drink from the new ones?  I think I actually read somewhere that they actually favor the full ones, but that doesn't make much sense.  The best I've come up with so far is to periodicly forbid all the barrels with 10 or more units in them to force them to finish off the old barrels, but this is annoying to do.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Cabinets store clothes.  Chests store everything else.  Neither are strictly necessary.

Some people don't recommend chests because dwarves tend to stuff food in them and it will eventually rot.
But what exactly is this "everything else" that you refer to?  (Besides rotten roasts, which I already know about)

Agricultural overproduction coupled with rampant unemployment?  Sounds like the Great Depression.

What you're going to have to do is get ALL of your dwarves employed on the farms and then deliver all of their produce straight to the atom-smasher so that supply won't outstrip demand and farming can remain profitable.

Either that or just shut down your 100-tile farm-plot and realize that you're living in a perfect communist state where unemployment doesn't matter.  Live off of your stores for a few years, and only buy the occasional exotic drinks or meat from passing caravans to maintain variety.

I am failing to see how this causes asymmetric pathing.  It sounds vaguely similar to suggestions that people travelling North should drive on the right-side of the road while people travelling South should drive on the left-side.
