DF General Discussion / Re: How did you learn about DF?
« on: January 12, 2011, 09:11:17 pm »
Television Tropes and idioms! It had a bunch of stories of awesomeness, depth, and goblin AI exploitation, all wrapped up with promises of charming ASCII display(which I personally can't get enough of; gotta love the abstract). I was scared off by promises of it kicking my ass.

I decided that it would be funny to get my ass kicked so me and my friend could laugh at it. Been a fan ever since! I'm about to get a job and get donating money too!

It could be operating system. Toady recently switched over to a new compiler.

It could also be the RAM. Dwarf Fortress takes up quite a bit.

The RAM is probably the issue, can't run many things with less than a gigabyte nowadays.

In fact, from everything I've read, it seems Impaler complained almost exclusively about UIs and worked exclusively on making better ones.

What, did a roguelike interface kill his parents or something?

I tried Goblin Camp. It took a while for me to figure out the controls because they were mouse based. It's not too similar to Dwarf Fortress either, more like inspired by it. Over time it will grow farther away from DF.

Also, that khazad thread is appalling. I hadn't known somebody tried to reverse engineer DF source code, which is just terrible. I need to get a job to donate more...

Wait, people are still working on it?

Shift+I

A very underused command for complex interactions. The only thing I think it's used for is gaining control of items. So shift+I and select what you've grappled(You must have grabbed it with your hands), you'll get the option of gaining control of it. This is also good for removing pesky armor from your enemies.

I just went through the northernmost fort and poked around the other ones a bit, and I gotta say, this is a great idea and the execution has been great so far! The northernmost dungeon's water pockets were genius, so I applaud the creator!

If your speed is 400, then you need to look into your backpack and stop lugging around that dragon corpse.

No, but the computer has no advantages over your adventurer. Everyone is on a level playing field. The NPC is probably crawling so fast because all he/she has is armor and a weapon whereas you're carrying extra supplies, no doubt. Try to get rid of the extra baggage.

i3 processors aren't very good. I don't know the price difference, but you should probably see if you can invest in an i5. Another tip, buy parts and build it yourself. Cutting out the middleman will save you more money than you'd think!

Yeah, I'm vanilla all the way. Well, with the exception of changing coats to trenchcoats, but I do that myself and it hardly changes gameplay. Just helps my imagination.

I like vanilla so I can use each new Dwarf Fortress version as soon as it is released. Also why I never use tilesets. I like the simplicity of the ascii and the base game and don't want the clutter of mods.

The switch to 3D was a big one. Boatmurdered was .23 I think. It was definitely 2D though. Tried .23 but I gave up after it scrapped 100 worlds at world gen.

The over-rehearsed aspect was enjoyable because it was so stilted.

Overall the review was good, especially directing those interested to the resources to help them start playing. Because, without the wiki, most nobody would get hooked.

What kind of structures/towns will dwarves and elves have if they get visible settlements in the next update?

Or stealing megabeast eggs and having a baby megabeast selling caravan!

Very many funny cartoons about Dwarf Fortress. Now where are those two comic threads...

I've never bothered much with cheese though, I find it's easier to just butcher all animals on migration. Keeps the FPS down and there's no food shortages anyway! I do like to buy it from caravans when I have an overflow of 1000 DBs from all the masterwork stone crafts.
