DF Bug Reports / Floating Stones (ramps)
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:58:00 pm »
Step 1) dig out some rock, so that you have some stones lying about.
Step 2) under each stone, one z-level down, dig an upwards ramp.

Now all your stones are floating above the ramp.  They don't fall down like they should.  As an extra bonus, when attempting to build anything, these stones will always show up at the top of the list, with distances in the negative tens of thousands (not static).  A dwarf trying to use this stone in construction will walk up to the stone and start doing the worm: lying down, getting back up, over and over and over and over and over.  They will never get the stone.

How do you fix this?  One option is to rewall a floor under them.  You can't use the stone itself to construct this floor.  However, once it's built, the stone will disappear.  But what if you want to keep the stone?  Even more fun, then: designate a floor under them, then cancel the construction of the floor.  The stone will now properly fall down.

DF Bug Reports / Hunters Forget to Return Kill
« on: October 31, 2007, 06:44:00 am »
Hunters have a tendency to very often leave their kills on the field.  This is aside from an interrupted Return Kill task (which is another issue).  Rather, a hunter will simply kill something while Hunting, then Hunt for something else.  I'm not exactly sure what causes this, but my guess is that if the hunter scores a hit that sends something flying, they won't recognize the kill.

DF Bug Reports / Ballista Arrows in Weapon Racks?
« on: August 21, 2006, 08:23:00 pm »
Try as I might, my dwarves don't seem to be willing to move ballista arrows into weapon racks.  This is putting a damper on my dual-ballista anti-siege defense, on account of arrows having to be moved all the way from the siege workshop every time the ballistas need reloading.  Perhaps the arrows are just too bulky?

DF General Discussion / Artifact weapon / woodcutting endless cycle
« on: August 16, 2006, 03:49:00 am »
Recently I had one of my carpenters craft Lithrushdastot, "The Fetid Sword" Oaken Crossbow.  After wondering why a crossbow would be called a sword, I noticed he was trying to pick up equipment, probably some bolts to use his crossbow with.  This is all well and good, but without a quiver, this means he was trying to hold three things: his crossbow (which I really doubt he'll part with), the bolts (which he needs for his crossbow) and a battle axe (because he has the wood cutting job).  From what I could tell, he picked up the bolts and dropped his axe.  He takes two steps, realizes he needs an axe, and gets a new one from the nearest weapon rack (if it wasn't so close, he might've just picked up his old axe).  So, he picks up the new axe in his right hand, but he's already holding his artifact crossbow in it, and so he drops the axe immediately.  Satisfied, he takes two steps away (he has no job during this time), then chooses a new task: equipping himself for his wood cutting job.  Back he goes to the axe, picks it up, drops it, takes two steps away, repeat.

I assume something similar would happen if someone was trying to pick up a pickaxe for mining.

DF General Discussion / Suggestion: military doors
« on: August 19, 2006, 08:36:00 pm »
I suggest that doors should have an option to be military-passable only.  The doors should remain locked to everybody except those in an active squad (and perhaps the castle guard).  The key here is that they'd be locked, serving to keep out threats.  This would make sense and make marksman bunkers a bit easier to make effective.

DF General Discussion / Getting water across the chasm
« on: August 18, 2006, 08:05:00 am »
How, exactly, do you use the aquaduct to get water across the chasm?  I tried the most obvious way: built an aquaduct across the chasm, opened it to the left and right, then put a channel on each side and had the water run through the middle.  Unfortunately, this simply caused the water to fall into the chasm.  I'm stumped as to how to actually use the aquaduct.

DF General Discussion / Sparring accident: happy thought?
« on: August 17, 2006, 10:48:00 pm »
Recently I had a sparring accident, killing one of my swordsdwarves.  Checking the idiot who I'm pretty sure caused it, in his thoughts are listed "Took joy in the slaughter recently," right after "lost a friend to tragedy" and "satisfying sparring lesson."  I don't think killing somebody in a sparring accident should give a happy thought at all.

DF General Discussion / What to do with caged goblins?
« on: August 20, 2006, 07:22:00 pm »
Because of my numerous cage traps at the entrances to my fortress, I've captured a bunch (but not enough, bah) of goblins.  But the question is, what should I do with them?  I don't have a half-dozen nobles that like goblins, I can't slaughter them, and I can't drown them unless if I spend a ton of time to put them in the floodgate farm room and rig up a lever to release then, because they don't drown in their cages.

Perhaps you should be able to tie hostile / invader enemies to ropes and keep them as practice for your dwarves.  Naturally, they wouldn't last so long, but at least it'd get rid of them and serve a use at the same time.
