DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is My Start Location Going to be Dull?
« on: November 02, 2007, 05:47:00 am »
If you are really intent on a not-dull fortress, keep on making ones on mountains until you get a visible chasm.  If your dwarves aren't immediately eaten by a giant cave spider, it'll provide hours of entertainment!

+50 bonus points if you manage to get a volcano AND a chasm.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: These floodgates... ARE USELESS!
« on: November 01, 2007, 08:39:00 pm »
Channels do not exist as they used to.  Designating a channel causes you to dig through the floor of the current z-level, and dig out the z-level below.  So, just place a floodgate on that lower z-level and it'll work.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Traffic Areas - cost?
« on: October 31, 2007, 06:53:00 am »
Bingo.  A dwarf would take a path crossing 24 1-cost tiles before they take a path crossing one 25-cost tile.  However, if it was between 26 1-costs and one 25-cost, they would go through the 25-cost tile.

This means that your Legendary Miner is apt to brain a demon with a single stroke.

Raw fish isn't edible.  Build a fishery to process it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to wield with two hands
« on: August 28, 2006, 03:59:00 pm »
I'm not positive, but I believe you use weapons in two hands if you aren't strong (large?) enough to use them in one hand.  That's it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Milking?

Cows apparently CAN be milked, just not by dwarves.  There's data in the raw file and everything.

Note that lockings omeone in the slammer will give them unhappy thoughts for a time, and I think it's possible that they'll go insane (this is compounded by them not being able to sleep).  On the other hand, when they DO get out, if they're still sane, they'll immediately jump to being ecstatic.

Just hope your sheriff is more keen on the lockups than the beatings.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mangrove logs needed...
« on: August 22, 2006, 12:08:00 am »
They shouldn't insist on a specific type of log.  At least, not a specific type of log that isn't local to your environment.  It will show the dwarf requesting items he's already collected, though, so it's likely there's something else he needs.

Thus there are no dwarves.

Here we have dwarves.

Use channels for your moat.  Flooded areas will not be blocked by fortifications.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Irrigation
« on: November 09, 2007, 10:34:00 pm »
That is all from the old version.  In the new version, you can just drop a farm on any soil.  Irrigation is only needed for farming on rock, which is not necessary.

The problem you're having, by the way, is that your stuff is on level z, and your water is on z-1.  So, the water stays where it is.  You'd need a pump (but the water is unnecessary here anyway, so this is purely academic).

DF Bug Reports / Floating Stones (ramps)
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:58:00 pm »
Step 1) dig out some rock, so that you have some stones lying about.
Step 2) under each stone, one z-level down, dig an upwards ramp.

Now all your stones are floating above the ramp.  They don't fall down like they should.  As an extra bonus, when attempting to build anything, these stones will always show up at the top of the list, with distances in the negative tens of thousands (not static).  A dwarf trying to use this stone in construction will walk up to the stone and start doing the worm: lying down, getting back up, over and over and over and over and over.  They will never get the stone.

How do you fix this?  One option is to rewall a floor under them.  You can't use the stone itself to construct this floor.  However, once it's built, the stone will disappear.  But what if you want to keep the stone?  Even more fun, then: designate a floor under them, then cancel the construction of the floor.  The stone will now properly fall down.

DF Bug Reports / Re: The carp has drowned.

Don't water-breathing creatures "drown" if they aren't in water?  Simply a confusing choice of words.

Also: shouldn't shields be equipped to the lower arm, not the hand?
