DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Annoying Bug?
« on: September 08, 2010, 01:04:23 am »
I saved so I could play DF after a small break. When I reloaded the game, my military dropped their weapons and armor. I checked the squad commands and they were ordered to kill a gobbo spearman that I had never seen, as there had not been any incursions on my glorious fortress. Once I dropped the kill order, the five of them  dropped their military post.

Does this happen often?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Barracks Idea
« on: September 07, 2010, 10:58:23 am »
I was thinking of having my barracks separate from my fortress. I'd need an area of flat ground outside the fortress (and on the same z-level, naturally). I'd be digging out the z-level underneath the ground and sprinkle stairways capped with floor hatches throughout it. It would let me shut down my fortress while having a fully mobile military who could appear quickly anywhere on the level of the fortress entrance.

Any thoughts, ideas, or improvements? Has this been done before, and did it work?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Let it be known!

That on this sixth day of playing DF, I have collected ADAM, entered Rapture, and had my ass handed to me by Splicers!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Frustration
« on: September 06, 2010, 03:56:49 pm »
Is there any way to stop dwarves from rushing into the field of battle like bumbling idiots? One of my doors was jammed open by the arm of a snatcher from earlier that never got picked up. My dwarves flooded out of the walls and straight into the spears of the goblin attackers. I canceled all jobs and forbade as much as I could, but still they came. It was a great fortress ruined by the low IQ of dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Zoos
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:58:58 pm »
I've captured a few child snatchers and want to display them for all to see. I've heard that people make zoos. Is it just imagination, or is there an actual designation for it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Poor Elf
« on: September 05, 2010, 07:23:38 pm »
The first elven caravan arrived at my fledgling fortress. I've finished digging out basic housing, stockpiles, and workshops on three separate floors, I and am planning the strategic and cautious massive mining operation of the floors beneath them. I receive the announcement stating that the merchants have left on their journey. While I was planning out my expansion, I notice a teal (I think that's the color) "E" wandering my fortress.

It has been two months and she has not left. This means, in my mind, one of two things.

1) She's an elf that has seen the light (or darkness) and wishes to convert to dwarfism.
2) She's a dirty scumbag Elven spy and should be killed slowly and painfully.

There is plenty of evidence supporting the second option. I constantly see her around my workshops. She has also wandered into the stockpile floor, my lowermost level at the moment, and I believe she is eying the supports I set up to ensure that the fortress does not collapse.

What shall I do with the filthy surface-dweller?

And please, no big awesome ideas. As much as I would probably like them, I'm a severe newbie (I've been playing for a week, this is my first multi-level fortress, and only my third or fourth to last past a year and a half without anyone going hungry or getting thirsty). I haven't encountered magma in my DF existence. I do have a brook and a child's grasp on digging and construction.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Advice?
« on: September 04, 2010, 11:08:54 pm »
I hadn't been sieged once, and only had one goblin ambush. Suddenly Bronze Colossus. My people weren't ready for that yet. I was training to fight fleshy things. So I decided screw it, flood him with dwarves. Well, he has 82 kills with a some pig tail fiber trousers. Managed to dent his left middle finger, though. And it wasn't even one of my trained warriors that did it. Anyway, what would be some advice for a well-rounded military?

DF General Discussion / Insanely Durable Dwarfs
« on: September 04, 2010, 10:10:16 am »

My group of poorly trained wrestlers took on a group of goblin ambushers. This one was skewered by a goblin two or three times. I expected a very long hospital stay. Instead, she took to training the recruits on the finer points of dodging. I figured she'd die from infection or something, and maybe being the militia commander was keeping her from the hospital, so I replaced her. She hasn't visited the hospital, and what gets me is that she's quite content even though her insides aren't completely inside.
Is there something I should do about this, or should I see how this plays out? If she stays like this, I'm scared for everything that attacks us.
Does anyone else have dwarves that feel no pain?

DF General Discussion / My Brain Is Asplode
« on: August 31, 2010, 09:39:38 pm »
I stumbled upon DF by extreme chance. Long story short, one search later and a quick download, and I had what I expected would be a grueling, fun game. Little did I know that fun has a totally different meaning in this part of the tubes.
I decided to read up on some of the more outstanding DF stories (Boatmurdered, Headshoots, Syrupleaf, and the legend of Asax being among them) before playing. All this did was further my want to start a fortress, and so I did. I had no idea what I was getting into. By the gods was it addicting. I've been playing for about two days now and I have finally had a fortress last into the second year. I am still taking baby steps (I just figured out how to create my first military squad), and I know I am hella far from being able to construct my own fun.
But holy crap this is the first time I have wanted to stick with something that has a learning curve so steep that it feels like I'm walking upside down. I have yet to build across multiple levels, and my stockpile organization is complete crap. I expect to be dead when the first siege arrives.

And the mountain I'm digging into is made out of damn granite. I've taken a few shots that I figure I'd show. Looking for advice, sagely wisdom, criticisms, and ways I could improve upon my current fortress.

1) Barracks, in the process of being dug out. Damn granite, takes forever.
2) Wood Furnace
3) Bowyer's Workshop
4) Smelter
5) Metalsmith's Forge
6) Clothier's Shop
7) Two more workshop rooms, as of yet not dug out
Eight) Mechanic's Workshop
9) Tanner's Shop
10) Kitchen
11) Kennels
12) Butcher's Shop
13) Carpenter's Workshop
14) Mason's Workshop
15) Food Stockpile
16) Temporary Weapon and Armor Storage (plan on moving it closer to the barracks once completed)
17) Craftsdwarf's Workshop
18) Wood Stockpile
19) Gem Stockpile
20) Stone Stockpile
21) Refuse Pit (created it before I did much underground, realized that it was positioned in the area I was designating for living quarters. Oh well)
22) Meeting Area with 5 statues, because I have no idea what I'm doing
23) Dining Room in need of expansion
24) Graveyard big enough for everyone and then some, because I have little hope for these dwarfs
25) Unfinished Hallway for Noble living areas.

The unmarked rooms are 2x2 bedrooms.

1) An area I made so that migrants coming from that pocket in the west would arrive sooner. The pocket was already there, I just dug to it.
2) Walls. Because why not.
3) A massive stone stockpile. Because I don't know any other way to clear rocks off the floor without taking up more underground space. I dislike clutter.
4) Trading Post
5) Slopes down to the underground.
6) Fishery
7) Bridge over a brook. Because I'll be damned if I'm not going to build a bridge over the first source of flowing water I can find.
Eight) Refuse Pit from ground level.

I'm currently enlisting my abundance of farmers and a couple peasants to train as soldiers.

Side Note: My miners are also assigned the task of removing any slopes within the walls, so that attacking forces won't bypass them. I may be a newbie, but I'm not a total loss. I also figured out how to trade no more than two minutes ago, so the exported wealth should go up with the next caravan.
