Life Advice / Make my keyboard better
« on: June 21, 2012, 12:22:25 am »
So it's kind of a really long story, and I kind of really don't feel like telling it, but I want to make it so if I hit the keys control and 0 (the number, not the letter) on my keyboard at the same time, it acts as if I had hit the page up key. How would I do this? I'm using Windows 7, if that matters.

Given the following two scenarios, which would you consider to be a greater/larger/whatever threat?

1.) Something really really bad, though, admittedly not very likely (say, the whole universe instantly collapsing into dust)

2.) Something much more likely, but not nearly as bad (say, the "tomb" over the reactor at Chernobyl failing and releasing radiation into the atmosphere)

I'm just curious about which one people tend to worry about more. You know, because I'm just the kind of guy who wants to know how the human mind works, just for giggles and/or because I can.

So... yeah. Preferably, you would expand on why you consider the one you choose to be the greater threat, otherwise there isn't much point.

Life Advice / 'Outpost', but With an 'I'
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:03:32 pm »
So, Bay12, I am in the process of writing something, and for my purposes, I need a synonym for 'Outpost' that starts with an 'I'. However, dictionary.com in thesaurus mode, and then all of Google, failed to give up something I can work with.

Can any of you guys come up with something?

So, when I talk to people, every time they say something, every single time (Just about), I don't hear them and I ask them to repeat themselves. I know that my hearing is just fine, because I always
do well on hearing tests. I don't know if anyone else realizes how often I do this, but I suspect they do, as it happens so often. What can I do to fix this? (And don't tell me to listen better, because my
(Is anyone else really annoyed by these infinitely wide text boxes? I keep having to hit enter so it doesn't scroll off.*) memory for that kind of thing is just terrible.)

And on a less important, but much more immediate problem, I made this cake. It was a super-delicious chocolate cake. It was a tiny one person cake, too, or at least it was intended to be. As it turned
out, I was unable to finish it. What should I do with it? And this is immediate, as I said, because my cake won't last forever, but I am unlikely to speak to anyone for well over 12 hours.

If you guys want my cake, I'll bring it to you, so long as you live within 10 feet of my house.

*And if you plan on asking, yes, I intended to cut off in the middle of that sentence with no warning at all.

Life Advice / Pong troubles
« on: June 10, 2011, 11:12:21 pm »
I am currently learning Python (To tell you the truth, I'm only learning it to prove a point to somebody), and am currently mid-way through coding a game of pong. However, I have encountered a problem. This problem is rather important to the entire play-ability of the game; I cannot figure out how to bounce the ball back. I have it set to stop when the ball hits the paddle, so, Bay12, how might I get the ball to bounce back to the left when it hits my paddle?

Code: (The code I have so far.) [Select]
from gasp import *

COMPUTER_WINS = 1
PLAYER_WINS = 0
QUIT = -1

def distance(x1, y1, x2, y2):
    return ((x2 - x1)**2 + (y2 - y1)**2)**0.5

def play_round():
    ball_x = 10
    ball_y = random_between(20, 280)
    ball = Circle((ball_x, ball_y), 10, filled=True)
    dx = 4
    dy = random_between(-5, 5)

    mitt_x = 780
    mitt_y = random_between(20, 280)
    mitt = Box((mitt_x, mitt_y), 30, 60, filled=True, color=color.BLACK, thickness=1)

    while True:
        if ball_y >= 590 or ball_y <= 10:
            dy *= -1
        ball_x += dx
        ball_y += dy
        if ball_x >= 810:
            remove_from_screen(ball)
            remove_from_screen(mitt)
            return COMPUTER_WINS
        move_to(ball, (ball_x, ball_y))

        if key_pressed('j') and mitt_y <= 580:
            mitt_y += 5
        elif key_pressed('k') and mitt_y >= 20:
            mitt_y -= 5

        if key_pressed('escape'):
            return QUIT

        move_to(mitt, (mitt_x, mitt_y))

        if distance(ball_x, ball_y, mitt_x, mitt_y) <= 30:
            remove_from_screen(ball)
            remove_from_screen(mitt)
            return PLAYER_WINS

        update_when('next_tick')

def play_game():
    player_score = 0
    comp_score = 0

    while True:
        pmsg = Text("Player: %d Points" % player_score, (10, 570), size=24)
        cmsg = Text("Computer: %d Points" % comp_score, (640, 570), size=24)
        sleep(3)
        remove_from_screen(pmsg)
        remove_from_screen(cmsg)

        result = play_round()

        if result == PLAYER_WINS:
            player_score += 1
        elif result == COMPUTER_WINS:
            comp_score += 1
        else:
            return QUIT

        if player_score == 5:
            return PLAYER_WINS
        elif comp_score == 5:
            return COMPUTER_WINS

begin_graphics(800, 600, title="Pong", background=color.PINK) #Don't be hatin' on mah pink backround
set_speed(120)

result = play_game()

if result == PLAYER_WINS:
    Text("Player Wins!", (340, 290), size=32)
elif result == COMPUTER_WINS:
    Text("Computer Wins!", (340, 290), size=32)

sleep(4)

end_graphics()

DF Modding / You ready for this? Aramco's next ridiculously named mod!
« on: April 06, 2011, 07:32:12 pm »
Are you ready for my next mod? It has a ridiculous name, as is my custom. It is called...

The Bridge of Power Mod

Now, these alleged bridges are not the type you have set up to atomsmash things-- but, rather, one to bridge the gap, no, the chasm that exists between steel and adamantine. Sort of like that mithril mod, but that is just easier to make steel. Now, if you know anything about adamantine, you'll know that one, single, material could not possibly bridge that gap. That's why this mod has four materials to bridge the gap. These materials are unusable in their raw form (And worthless, so don't bother selling it). In order to get a usable material, you'll have to combine two of the raw stuff, one useless stone, and fuel at a Bridge Workshop. Or, alternatively, two ores, one useless stone, and no fuel at a magma bridge workshop.

Also, you can combine two Aurontine, two Lithesium, and to Dextronium to make adamantine (Though I don't see why you'd want to). Wondering what they're called, and how they perform? Well, the first one, Aurontine (Kudos to Jeousha for the material generator), occurs in sedimentary and metamorphic stone layers, about a third as often as standard materials, in small clusters. The second, Lithesium (Once again, credits to Jeousha), occurs in the same exact way as Aurontine. The third, Dextronium (Once again), occurs in the same way, but only occurs one fifth as often as standard materials.  And the last, Xanthogen. Xanthogen is, well, to put it bluntly, pretty pathetic for weapons and armor. It's value, though-- seems Dwarves really like that eye-wrenching color. It is the most valuable material in the game, and slightly rarer than Dextronium.

And the performace? Aurontine out performs silver for blunt weapons, but is terrible for edged weapons. Lithesium is the opposite-- Great for edged weapons, but terrible for blunt. And the last, Dextronium, is better than any other material in the game (Save maybe adamantine itself) for edged weapons and blunt weapons.

I wouldn't be surprised if this turned into a total overhaul mod, so don't expect this to be it.

This is probably the longest post I've ever made.

EDIT: Heh... Forgot the download link.

Oh, one more thing-- I take no responsibility for you if the extreme colors burn the eyes out of your sockets.

DF Modding / [ITEM_X]
« on: April 06, 2011, 02:32:12 pm »
So, for these [ITEM_X] tags, I know what they do in general, but what does each one specifically allow for in production?

These ones--

[ITEMS_HARD]
[ITEMS_METAL]
[ITEMS_BARRED]
[ITEMS_SCALED]
[ITEMS_SOFT]

EDIT: Also, I'm modding in three new metals, and I'm terrible at coming up with names. Any suggestions?

DF Modding / I think I have a problem.
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:51:48 pm »
I think I have some sort of problem with modding. The lines of code have always flown right through my fingers into the game, and become something awesome. Recently, however, with my Mosquito of Power/Honey Bee of Power mods, while they are still awesome, they're not as awesome as the could be. What should I do?!

DF Modding / Honey Bee of Power Mod
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:31:35 pm »
Some of you may remember my Mosquito of Power Mod. Well, this is The Honey Bee of Power Mod. With it, in addition to honey bees, you will also get Honey Dwarves.What are the differences between the two, you ask? Well, Honey Dwarves have the body of a dwarf, and the wings of a bee. They produce magma rather than honey, and inject venom through their noses. (Don't ask.) Alright, I admit it, I was bored and just went through the honey bee raws, and changed every instance of "honey" to "magma", every instance of "bee" to "dwarf", and the prefstring to MAGMA. I tried to give them magma for blood, but it didn't work.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do you pronounce Urist?
« on: April 04, 2011, 04:45:15 pm »
We've all been saying Urist to refer to every Dwarf in our fortresses, ever since that one hermit fortress. Just now, I realized, I have no idea whether or not I've been pronouncing it right. Let's see, it could be-

1. Yer-ist (How I've been saying it)
2. You-rist
3. Er-ist
4. Oo-rist

And the list goes on. How do you all pronounce it?

Life Advice / Internet, I give up. I'm asking the forums.
« on: April 04, 2011, 03:16:25 pm »
For the longest time, I've heard people use their internet talk, and never understood it. I tried to figure it out by context, leaving me with only two things I cannot decipher. What do these mean?

One- "AFAIK"
Two- "IIRC"

What could they mean?!

13
I have two questions about how Dwarves react when they are fearing for their pathetic lives.

One- Will Dwarves run from wild animals who are on chains?

Two- If a Dwarf is running from an animal, will he/she jump into a pit to get away?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / They... they worship a goat?
« on: March 26, 2011, 08:47:28 pm »

My dwarves worship a goat! Why do they worship a goat?! That doesn't even make sense!

Although, he is associated with some of my favorite things. Do they always worship things this ridiculous?

DF Modding / The raw files and folders.
« on: March 24, 2011, 07:27:30 pm »
I have another question. (I seem to ask quite a lot. Interesting, because I hardly ever have problems modding.) If I put the raw files in folders within raw-objects will it read them? For example, if I place all the creature files in raw-objects-genericfoldercontainingcreatures, will it recognize them?
