Other Games / Academagia: the harder-than-usual-core mage simulation
« on: August 13, 2010, 01:40:33 pm »
I've been a passive lurker for the most of my life, but I've though this kind of a game might be of interest to fellow DF fans.

http://www.academagia.com/

You are a magical student and are free to do whatever you want. Game features a rather sophisticated freeplay mechanics: you can assemble a  personal Clique of minion students, plot against competitors, spread gossips and bully others, if you like - or be a hard-working student, trying to impress the professors - or be an adventuring soul in quest for the forbidden knowledge... There are something like a hundred of skills, and believe or not, AFAIN they are all useful to some extent.

Interface of the game is bad. Seriously bad. People responsible for design have obviously never heard of usability; there are lots of rough edged here and there. Hope patches will smooth that out. Also, visual side is very simplistic: it's mostly text (LOTS of text, nicely written, though) and some static images, accompanied by classical music.

Learning curve is a bit steep, but meh, it's a DF forum.

Curses / DOS recorder
« on: May 17, 2006, 03:50:00 am »
"DOS recorder is a cross-platform application which records "text
videos" - the text output of console (text-only) applications (Windows,
MS-DOS or Linux) into specially designed, platform-independent
compressed "text demo" files.

The demo format preserves timing, color and cursor information, making
it perfect for text-based 80x25 roguelikes, such as ADOM, Crawl,
DoomRL, etc.

Other features include support for annotations, and a Java applet for
playing demo files from a web browser.

Curses / LCS 3 Bug(s)

OK, so far I have found but one...

After pick-up'ing the Socialite in juice caffe and choosing the option to try  not to spend a single penny I had "Is quite taken with unique phylosophy" and the game crashed (performed illegal operation)... Reproduced later with a teenager. When I had this option with hippie, "things didn't quite work out", and no crash  :).

Curses / Liberal crime squad

This game is just great  :). True, one of the best ASCII games I ever played and I am a big fan of ADoM. Simply thanks for writing it!
One notice, though - it's a lot of pain to finish the game... Even when I had the whole government elitely liberal (with few conses snatching here and there, but they were unable to do anything) I had to deal with pollution (it was liberally blue and everything else was elte green). And I've spent ~30 minutes to do so! They were discussing and discussing the same problems "Naying" them without any wish to punish polluters. I was writing about pollution in newspaper, was killing nasty polluters and breaking stuff - they still disscussed 100% failed things! That's bad.
And, second, when something is failed by House, why bother voting at Senate? It will be failed either way so it just takes time...
