I'll be waiting.

Forewarning: it has to be turn-based, require no mouse to control and fit well enough with ASCII visuals. Also, I'd appreciate it very much if no pathfinding algorithms would be requred.

Other than that, I think I'll manage. Both menu-based and ASCII-map based models won't take much effort from my side.

If someone comes up with a complete game mechanics of any game discussed here, I'll program it.

So, how does the game play now that it's at 1.08?

Considering, since Academagia is still regularly releasing 'non-save compatible' and 'stuff I'd rather have from the beginning' patches and updates... I'll hold off.  Will be another sale sooner or later anyways.

Generally, only content patches (which are rare, only 2 so far) are incompatible with saves, and they are only incompatible in a sense you don't get the new stuff they add.

But yeah, patches are regular (once a week for a while already), so the later you hop in, the smoother sailing will be :).

Yeah, so it's a weekend deal.

Also, critical mass has been already amassed and Academagia in finally rated on Impulse :). Seeme like majority of players actually like it, too (4 stars).

Have you already gave the Unity engine a go?

As a matter of fact, I do agree with most of the criticism posted here; the only thing, the flaws mentioned do not prevent me from having fun. The one which actually hurt was the "tiny fonts" issue - and here I owe all of you a big one, since you were vocal enough to influence developers' priorities into fixing the issue.

Speaking of failure - judging by official forum activity, there are more people than just me, who like the game :). So I actually hope it is not and will not be a failure.

And since I can't do anything to improve that game, I've actually rebooted my own "wizard sim" (ASCII, freeware), which emphasises gameplay over content. We'll see if you guys will like that one better :-P.

In case anyone is interested in how things are going around with Academagia, I'll sum it up:

1) Free DLC was released, including more game content.

2) Summarily, 4 patches released, with the option to alter the font size (+\- or Left-Right keys) and interface tweaks, which include Pheme description on roll over. General game speed increase.

3) No promos so far.

There was a bit of discussion on the length of the game.

Outstanding issues so far: no demo, no hotkeys, no sandbox mode, sinterface lags in inventory and familiar screen.

The new one, Renaissance, made by fans, is actually well polished. I really enjoyed it.

Second that. And it's not too expensive, either. I'd say, grab that one and ignore the others, if you've never played the series.

Alright, it appears my graphics card should probably work with this. I'll look into the game more tomorrow before deciding whether or not to get it.

My integrated Radeon HD 3200 had no problems running the game at lowest possible options. If you have anything better than that, should be a smooth experience.

Bear in mind, though, that game is HARD :).

How many examples can you provide to back this up?  And you can't use Sins of a Solar Empire or Demigod because Stardock was only the publisher there, not the developer.

Actually, he can. Since it's typically up for the publisher to decide, whether or not to invest some additional resources into patching. They are the ones paying bills for that.

So I just finished the game and...I want more! I really liked what I did upto now and can't wait for year 2.
Are there any mods which allow me to use the same character again to start year 1 over? That would be awesome :)

Devs are looking into adding the extended duration sandbox mode. But I'm afraid that'd require a new character anyway.

It goes like this.
<...>
I'm sure magic later on is better, and starting with books that offer offensive spells is probably more exciting, but yeah, overall, magic is pretty damn boring so far.

Thanks for a detailed write-up. Yeah, sounds rather uninspired so far. BW promised "numerous content updates" in future, so if that's the one promise he keeps, maybe the situation will improve.

Otherwise, fan mods sound like the only salvation for the game.

One question - is there a "vs element" bonus\penalty for elemental magic spells (like fire golem gets double the damage from ice, half from fire)?

Technically we'll never know if they released the game in an unfinished state.

In fact, we do. Brad Wardell (the CEO of Stardock) explicitly stressed in his development blog that you DO NOT want to play the RTM version. They knew it was bad. And that's a common practise in Stardock: he admitted they did exact same thing with GalCiv2. Still, that doesn't look like their invention; Paradox immediately comes to mind, and there should be more examples.

As to why release early... There is such a thing as a retail slot. You miss it, you wait for the next one. Their next one was in January. Guess they decided that's too much.

BTW, can anyone who got the copy describe the magic system they went with? Have they kept their promise of discarding the rock-paper-scissors system of "fire beats water"  bunch of identical spells (ice bolt = fire bolt) and replace it with something more creative, or not?

In case it might be interesting for anyone, text magnification for the Adventures (more will follow) is already in the today's patch.

Tedious manual filling of everyday routine wasn't yet fixed, unfortunately, and the price wasn't changed either.

I'll post an update if there is some kind of a price reduction or a sale (dunno, if any are planned) or if there is a significant update.

Also, devs mentioned that most DLC will be free.

Offtopic p. s. Thanks to everyone for giving a heads-up on Recettear, I'd have missed that little gem otherwise :-P.
