DF Gameplay Questions / Flow and stairs (0.42.04)

I wish to pump around some magma and some water. The project will involve lots of vertical shafts. It might be more convenient for me if I tunneled those with stairs instead of just channeling out the tiles completely. Will this affect/impede the flow of water or magma in any way?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf hauling is weird.

So I've started playing again after a 2-year pause. I've noticed that the hauling system seems to be a little bit different now.
My problem: instead of picking up a fish and bringing it to the food pile or picking up a plump helmet spawn and bringing it to the seed pile, my dwarfs go to the pile first, pick up a container that already has some of the stuff they're going to pick up in it (i.e. a fish barrel or a plump helmet spawn bag), then bring the container to the item, put the item in the container and the bring the whole container back. Or sometimes they don't even bring the container back, they just leave it where the item used to be. But the most annoying thing about this is the constant spam of ".. planting seeds interrupted: needs plump helmet spawn!" - I DO HAVE ENOUGH PLUMP HELMET SPAWN, BUT SOME IDIOT DWARF SNATCHED THE WHOLE BAG IN ORDER TO PICK UP ONE SEED SOMEWHERE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MAP!

This being dwarf fortress I'm pretty sure that I'm simply doing something wrong or have missed some sort of option. So... how do I prevent dwarfs from taking full containers from stockpiles?

A dwarf gets unhappy when one of his masterworks gets destroyed. The more masterworks he already has the less unhappy he gets.

Does this include masterworks that have already been destroyed/sold to caravans?
i.e. does the unhappiness-amount depend on the total of masterworks a dwarf created or on the total of his masterworks present on the current map?

I don't have any Kaolinite on my map, yet would like to have some porcelain. Since the wiki tells me I need Kaolinite rocks and a Kiln to get it I imported some Kaolinite rocks.

Sooo... now what?  ???
The Kiln still doesn't show any Porcelain option. Am I missing something?

One of my miners was just randomly found dead in his bed. He didn't have any wounds, diseases or contaminants, so I was kind of taken by surprise. In order to find out what happened I engraved a memorial plate for him (since those include the dying reason) and I got even more surprised:

"This is a superior quality granite memorial to Onol Besmarvir. It is encrusted with oval diorite cabochons.
The slab reads 'In memory of Onol Besmavir / Born 121 / Died peacefully in the year 276 / Devoted mother and wife / Friend of ducks'"

In 3 years of playing dwarf fortress this is a first for me - I didn't even know it was possible O.o

Currently preparing the materials for my magma-pumpstack. Can I use any random stone blocks generated by my masonry, or do I have to avoid certain types of stone?

I plan on flooding the surface with lava to make my fort entrance the only habitable place around. So does the magma sea always provide an infinite supply of magma I can use?

I built an elaborate pipe system for the various needs for water in my fortress. One pipe is now blocked by a fungiwood - did I just forget to smooth that one floor tile or does smoothing not help at all and I have to drain the whole system to construct "artificial" floors instead?

I've read in the wiki that there's an apparently very easy way to get rid of all pets, or rather a certain kind of animal by removing its vital organs from the game files or something like that. How would I accomplish this? I haven't found an actual guide :o

(I personally would like to get rid of cats)

Is there any way to extend the length/width limits of certain buildings? I.e. farming plots, walls, floors, etc.
