Dear Goden Handlepass/Urist McVampire:

Well, that was a surprise. Locked up in a room of disarmed gobbos, not only did you not die, you proceeded to murder the shit out of all five of them completely bare-handed. I'm having second thoughts on killing you, though you're not still going anywhere near the sleeping quarters.

Sincerely,
The Overseer

Dear Olin Endoketur/Goden Handlepass,

Yes, I know that vampires need blood. Nevertheless, you have pissed me off. I'd even given you a work exemption since, hey, how many High Master Butchers do you get? And your social skills/ascension to mayor, not so suspicious either. Until I carefully looked through Legends mode with a fine-toothed comb and found you.

For the time being, you're the new fortress early-warning system. The post of mayor goes back to the poor sod you stole it from, while I hurry construction on a new marksmen moving-target practice system/goblin execution chamber/arena. You will be the inaugural contestant, if you survive watch duty. And if you live through that, there's always more death traps that need testing.

Sincerely,
A Very Vengeful Overseer

I am aware of the new Child Outreach program encouraging younger dwarves to go out and see the world. However, my fortresses are not nurseries. Stop sending kids. I need migrants with useful skills, but thus far of nine migrants five have been children, and it was so much worse in my previous fort. I already have advisers urging my to implement Dwarven Daycare via training weapons and I am strongly tempted to do so.

So, er, I hate to be a bother, but it seems that in addition to my cartridge woes, I can't get spring guns to work. From what I understand, they're supposed to be loaded with gunstones (like BBs) and fired. It seems that Arena mode respects that, but I can't get my dwarves in Fortress Mode to understand.

Perhaps it's because they only know how to use quivers and crossbows...?

Dear Urist McSpringgunners (black powder mod):

Yes, I'm aware that difficulties in making cartridges mean that your weapons are somewhat less threatening than they could be. Nevertheless, I did hope that bouncing lead BBs off the gobbos would have hurt them.

Instead, you seem intent on not training at the range. You also seem intent charging in with bayonets--with which you have had no practice at all. It took the legendary miners' squad to bail out your sorry asses against that Goblin Spearmaster.

Enjoy your convalescence.

Sincerely,
The Overseer

It'll be a while before I have access to magma. Am I to understand that piling a few dozen granite blocks on top of them and then opening the hatches will result in splats?

I do want to collect the goblinite and (if possible) reuse the cages, though, and it's my understanding that a cave-in would just straight-out wreck everything.

So I just dropped a couple of gobbos down a shaft about 20 z-levels or so, and the results were unexpected.

Fact: the more-heavily armored gobbos survived. One made it with only a broken arm, although several others were reduced to goblin paste. Also, a rutherer survived, but died of bleeding.

The same lever linked their cages and the support that dropped them, by the way.

More strangely, however, the messages indicated that they were "caught in a cloud of boiling magma". There was never any magma present; I hadn't gotten anywhere near it. It didn't seem to have done them any harm, oddly.

Any hints for drop shafts for prisoners (other than "make sure the staircases are locked" and "make it deeper", both of which I learned the hard way)? And what happens if I drop them in their cages?

Still nope. Strangely, the workbench still asks for plant cloth. Changes to the raws should be reflected in-game immediately, right?

Completely unrelated, has anyone successfully gotten dwarves to practice their marksmanship with spring guns? I just want to know if it's possible at the moment; my spring gun-equipped marksmen are lounging around, and an attempt to get them to kill a goblin thief resulted in a broken arm for one of them when they decided to charge in with bayonets (instead of shooting him). I suspect this is more my problem in configuring them.

Sorry, I didn't mean a stack of 80 powder. I meant I had 80 units of gunpowder total; now I have a total of 150 bags of gunpowder. (Thank Armok explosions aren't modeled yet, the gunpowder stash is right next to the forges and the furnaces. If they caught a stray spark the results would be rather special.)

Anyway, I just made the edits on the raw files; the cartridge reactions now read:

It still isn't letting me make any of the cartridges. Any help?

Is there any way I could have a minecart loaded and on the rails, but not actually going anywhere until I give the say-so?

Aww. Best of luck with that.

Still, though, I suggest posting quantities on the main page. 150 powder for 60 cartridges seems pretty exorbitant, so you may wish to warn players about that.

EDIT: wait, shit. I've got 150 powder, bullets out the wazoo, plant cloth, and bags free, and I still can't make cartridges.

In-game it tells me that the reagents are "Large gunstone, Gunpowder, Bag, Plant Cloth", four items; it combines to make 60 large cartridges.

From the raws:
Code: [Select]
[REACTION:CARTRIDGES_L]
[NAME:prepare large cartridges]
[BUILDING:WORK_BENCH:NONE]
[ADVENTURE_MODE_ENABLED]
[REAGENT:A:60:AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BULLET_L:NONE:NONE]

[REAGENT:D:1000:CLOTH:NONE:NONE:NONE][ANY_PLANT_MATERIAL]
[PRODUCT:100:60:AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_CARTRIDGE_L:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[SKILL:CLOTHESMAKING]
[ADVENTURE_MODE_ENABLED]

EDIT: derp. I think I see the problem: I have only 80 units of gunpowder, and the reaction requires 150.

Well, it seems like a pretty crippling issue, so I suspect I'm the one who's hosed up somewhere, as otherwise it'd probably have been reported already. Still, as far as I can tell I have all the reagents, so, well, it is a mystery, I suppose.

More playing with the mode revealed two interesting things. The first is that, ordered to make gunstones out of any available metal, the dwarves made a stack of 60 large golden gunstones. They sold for 10800 for the stack. Holy precious ammunition, Urist, keep this up and we'll be buying the kingdom!

The second, more frustrating, is that I can't seem to get the dwarves to make cartridges. I've got large stocks of rope reed cloth, gunpowder (mostly in leather bags), large gunstones, and free cloth bags--yet the option remains red. Are there any tricks I'm missing?
