Now /that/ is interesting  :) Is there no log file or anything that could help you shed light on things? Or dooe it just say <so> with no other information? Sounds like you have a mysterious event on your hands.

That is really strange, try removing the ambusher tag from them, maybe make them hunting giant cave spiders :P you might even want to rename them and make them a totally new monsters like Giant Wolf Spider

lmao, dog silk webs? I love this game. So if you give your dwarf babies the ability to make web you'll be able to start weaving dwarf baby silk?
Just as an aside. I lowered the number of cave spiders in my file and it actually made MORE cave spiders next time I played. There were WAY more than 5 O.o I went into a cave and instead of or 3 or 4 they were every where like batmen ect. I wish I was home at the moment to review what exactly I set it to.

It's really strange that you got all that spider silk just from editing a creatue file. You might have cave spidres on your map but they are under ground too. try start on a 1x1 with your settings so you don't have to look very far for them :P Try setting it to like 100:300 to see if you get a shit ton of them.

Do we know that 2:5 will make 2-5 cave spiders exist or is that some sort of ratio? Maybe it really means 2 out of 5 times you'll have cave spiders or there is a 2/5ths chance for a cave spider to spawn or 2 out of 5 maps will have cave spiders : P Has any one really nailed that down to be, in fact, 2-5 cave spiders?

Oh yes! You certainly should have! Have you never heard of Drizzt and the Drow books? I mean dwarf fortress almost seems based off the dwarf from the series. He gets a fey mood and crafts a masterpiece artifact called Aegis Fang that is extremly strong (Mithril head engraved with gold dust) When his adopted human son throws the hammer it kills pretty much anything (including most giants) In a single hit THEN it reappears in his hand almost instantly! Its freaking awsome. I think only one giant named Bigrin or something like that was able to resist it but he wasn't really a giant he was some kind of demon from another plane so it doesn't count ;P  ANY HOW I can't wait till make weapons get into the game so my dwarfs can stop making their insanely over rated toy axes and stuff.

How bout a war hammer named Aegis-Fang that is only created when you select a dwarf to make his one great master piece (Which blows away things created by special moods but can only be created one time for each dwarves life time) that causes insane damage when thrown and reappears in the throwers hand in seconds. Just a thought?

Could be like the glass weapons from the last crappy Ultima game they made. The glass weapon was only good for one attack but when you stabbed the enemy it shattered inside of them and caused massive damage. It'd be cool to be albe to use glass to make glass globes and fill them with acid or something to make bombs or traps :P

DR I do like your list, your graphics remind me a lot of FF 1 or so while Sphrs remind me more of Dragon Warrior 4 or something, SNES level graphics :P  Do you know where I can see the other graphic pack you mentioned I didn't see that listed on the wiki with the other graphic packs.

I think that is why Dwarf Fortress wouldn't work so well if it did go full 3d with a big company. Making it fully realized would take away from the imagination involved.

With that in mind, it'd be freaking awsome to make  a dwarf fort Mud, and I think I might actually look into doing that now that I've had the idea. Of course I'd need Toady's permission ect but it would be a good way for all of us to come together! Sorry, just a random thought there.

DF Modding / Tile Set-Graphic Sets Suggestions
« on: January 04, 2008, 02:59:00 pm »
I've been looking through the tile sets and the graphic sets on the wiki after finding an interesting link in someones profile. I was wondering if anyone used both to make the game look a bit more interesting. I would like to add a graphic set and a tile set to make the game look more like a game and less like the Matrix however I have a few questions.

1) For those of you that have tried graphics sets do you find that it adds to the game or does it take away? The way I've viewed Dwarf Fortress and most Rogue like games or Muds is that they are like books. In other words Dwarf Fortress is to Diablo 2 as a book is to a movie. A book gives you the ability to imagine the situation in your mind while a movie forces you to watch another persons imagination turned into reality. Dwarf Fortress then allows you to imagine your dwarf slamming his axe into a goblin's spine instead of being forced to watch some animation that is the same each time. SO , does adding a graphic pack to the game take away from this experience for anyone?

2) Does adding a tile set, graphic pack to the game that was not included caused increased lag or is it pretty much the same as it was before?

3)Those of you who have had a lot of experience with these sorts of things, can you recomend any sets that work well together? I believe once I get access to the internet again at home I'm going to use the GuyBrush 16x16 character set along with all of Sphr's graphic sets becuase IMHO they are ALL awsome O.o Still I would like to hear other users opinions to see what goes best with DF in their opinion.

4)Does adding these graphics packs ect cause any instability in the game? Are they still compatable with the newer versions of dwarf fortress and if I do use them should I continue to check for updates? How likely is it that Toady will change the usage of a character from a door to a dog? Hence how likely will it be that I see a door running around attackin people if I don't pay attention to version changes? :P

All of these questions are just information gathering, I know ultimately the choice is mine to make and it is based on personal taste. Still, I would like to know what others have experienced in these fields and see what I can expect if I try one.

I dunno about anyone else but when i get a weapon stuck in someone and kill them the weapon is on the ground whereever the body is or, in the case of blowing them away, it is sometimes randomly on the ground some where in between me and the place the body ended up. Someone else reported that when he got a weapon stuck in a monster and it died, the weapon disappeared. Never had that happen myself. (Though I always use a hammer dwarf so the only time I get weapons stuck is if I'm throwing a spear I found)

I think it can also mean they're enraged or entered into a combat trance cause I had some kid start flashing on me and he wasn't named or anything. As far as the drunk in the forest, get a drunk, name him something, then leave them there to see if he returns home or just hangso ut in the forest :P

Sorry Armok I don't have internet at home and I'm not aloud to visit chat rooms at work (Hopefully they never catch on that a forum is almost the same thing)

Fenrir I highly suggest the following. Sit down with a pad of paper (or note pad open) And think of somehing cool you want your character to achieve. For example, an epic battle with Armok that ends with him stealing the powers of the Blood God. Put that at the bottom of the page (Whatever you figure out) Then at the top of the page put where your character is now. Imagine what it would take in order for your characher to from point A to point B. For this example say, you'd have to get to his plane to kill him so. So go dig a fort with demon pits and dig to deep, then come back with your party to that fort and fight your way down to the demon pits and write the story based on what happens there (Fighting demons should be a lot harder than fighting ironmen and crap) Might give you something more interesting to write about than boring cave romps.

Still you did a very good job with what you had and I enjoyed reading your story. I've ignored most of the community forts and such around here but your story drew me right in. I like you style of writing and you could be /great/. Just give your character more interesting things to do (Maybe even attack a few human capitals and see if you can kill their lord or a goblin fortress or other old lost forts that you lose in interesting ways)

You know I just realized, that we each are the Blood Gods of our own world. That god demanding blood in your characters dream is you, driving your character on to greater and greater acts of depravity. Just like I am currently forcing my dwarves to build great towers for me from the stone. We are all a blood god  :)
