I've been looking through the tile sets and the graphic sets on the wiki after finding an interesting link in someones profile. I was wondering if anyone used both to make the game look a bit more interesting. I would like to add a graphic set and a tile set to make the game look more like a game and less like the Matrix however I have a few questions.
1) For those of you that have tried graphics sets do you find that it adds to the game or does it take away? The way I've viewed Dwarf Fortress and most Rogue like games or Muds is that they are like books. In other words Dwarf Fortress is to Diablo 2 as a book is to a movie. A book gives you the ability to imagine the situation in your mind while a movie forces you to watch another persons imagination turned into reality. Dwarf Fortress then allows you to imagine your dwarf slamming his axe into a goblin's spine instead of being forced to watch some animation that is the same each time. SO , does adding a graphic pack to the game take away from this experience for anyone?
2) Does adding a tile set, graphic pack to the game that was not included caused increased lag or is it pretty much the same as it was before?
3)Those of you who have had a lot of experience with these sorts of things, can you recomend any sets that work well together? I believe once I get access to the internet again at home I'm going to use the GuyBrush 16x16 character set along with all of Sphr's graphic sets becuase IMHO they are ALL awsome O.o Still I would like to hear other users opinions to see what goes best with DF in their opinion.
4)Does adding these graphics packs ect cause any instability in the game? Are they still compatable with the newer versions of dwarf fortress and if I do use them should I continue to check for updates? How likely is it that Toady will change the usage of a character from a door to a dog? Hence how likely will it be that I see a door running around attackin people if I don't pay attention to version changes?
All of these questions are just information gathering, I know ultimately the choice is mine to make and it is based on personal taste. Still, I would like to know what others have experienced in these fields and see what I can expect if I try one.
