DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I badly draw your reports!

I like to picture it as those joke teeth that clatter away by themselves, the dwarf/horse was using them as dentures when they latched on. Then the dentures slipped out but carry on biting anyway.

Do you have to spawn in certain areas to get zombie invasions/necromancers?

How do you actually kill the zombies off if they just reanimate?

108
I thought I lowered that cap to about 40 and I already have way more than 40. I messed around in the files/settings to make it easier for attacks to happen (less wealth needed, less population needed).

109
I've tried setting the Megabeast and Titan number to huge amounts and placed a large number of civs, I've also lowered the requirements for titans to attack. I start in areas with a lot of savagery and near a goblin civ.

However, even after breaching the caverns early, waiting a few years and generally building up my fort. I never seem to get anything crazy happen. Just a few small groups of goblins. I seem to have killed off most of the natural wildlife too =/

I see people always talking about some crazy stuff going on, like Necromancers attacking, zombies and all sorts. I just seem to get goblins.

How can I start somewhere that will have a lot of combat but not be totally impossible to survive (such as Terrifying biomes now that you can't kill skeletons as they just reanimate).

Katwithk, did you change the print mode to TEXT? Chances are, it's still trying to render in 2D Mode.

There's a file at ./df/data/init/init.txt that has a line "[PRINT_MODE:]" with probably something 2D set. You need to change that line so it says "[PRINT_MODE:TEXT]"

If you have already set it to text and it doesn't work, then I have another question. Is your Linux distro 64-bit?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Laptop keys.
« on: November 01, 2012, 12:28:12 pm »
Most laptops require you to press Fn at the same time as the F keys to use the functions. If the F keys are changing system settings when you press them by themselves, check your keyboard for a "FN Lock" or "Funciton Lock" key. Press that to turn off FN being held down by default.

Most new players never enter the 'nobles' screen.

You can manually appoint a book keeper (will give you a numerical breakdown of -everything- you have in your fortress) and a manager (allows you to use the manager tab, probably one of the strongest tools in the game).

With a manager you can just open it up, say "construct 20 beds" and the dwarfs will figure the rest out. Provided they have the materials. It's especially useful as it has a search bar so you don't have to find your workshop, press q, dig through the menu, find the item and select it. The manager will also load balance between all workshops/available dwarves.

Due to the inconsistent response time and how long it takes to do anything. I highly recommend only playing adventure mode :P Fortress mode is impossible for me to play like this haha.

Done.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's god damn hard to control without a full size keyboard/all buttons on page/no numberpad. My SSH client didn't need the :22, I think it does that by default (which is weird cos some people change ports...)

Could be that your router is blocking it or forwarding it to the wrong place? Check on your router and make sure it's forwards any traffic on port 22 to the local IP of the linux system.

And on my phone I'm trying to connect to

myusernameher@myexternalip:22

correct?

The actual structure on this depends on the App. Most of them just have an input form which will say "Username" "password" "ip" "port", etc.

I've SSH'd to my server and I'm currently trying to get it to work. It's currently installing the 32bit stuff though as I'm using a 64 bit system. I'll post some screenies if I can get it working.

Errr... 22 for SSH I believe.

/etc/init.d/ssh is one of the default locations I think.

No worries. If you run those commands I said, you should have OpenSSH working at least!

OpenSSH:
I'm looking at the website, and scratching my head over both it and the installation instructions.
My, I do have ever so much to learn about all of this.

Have you ever used a Linux Distro? I'm familiar with Ubuntu and I just open the shell and type:

sudo apt-get install openssh-server openssh-client

You can then make sure it's started with

sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start

Then you can connect to it by doing:

ssh username@ip.address

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Vampires and bleeding out?
« on: November 01, 2012, 07:52:43 am »
The problem with Vampires is that there's so many 'types' from various lore/myths, a bit like zombies.

Some Vampires drink blood to stay young, others need it to simply function, some are bloodless but still drink blood. Surely if a vampire was going to bleed out, they could just suck on the wound and become a perpetual blood dispenser.
