DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mobile dwarf fortress?

It should work with any distro of Linux and even on Windows if you use VirtualBox.

Like I said, I haven't tried it but I will answer any questions. I'm curious myself as I have a smartphone and a linux server so I will experiment tonight (in approx. 6 hours) to see if I can get it to work. I know how to do it all in theory but the practical side may be more difficult (I hope not).

You can run Dwarf Fortress directly from the shell application on Linux  (like Terminal on Mac or CMD on windows) . Linux has SSH (Secure Shell) which allows you to access a Linux computer's shell from the internet (provided you have the IP address and a valid username/password). There are smartphone apps that let you use SSH to connect to a computer.

So you install OpenSSH on your phone and computer. Connect to your computer via SSH from your phone, browse to your DF directory and run it. You will now be playing Dwarf Fortress on your phone but all the processing is happening on the computer.

Not sure how you would control DF with a smart phone and I imagine you can't use tilesets this way? Also, I have no idea what the data usage would be. I know shell is simply text but sending frame after frame of dwarf fortress must stack up? Normally you only send some commands and get a blank line/some text back.

Note: I have not tried this is anyway or form. It's pure speculation from my knowledge of Linux but it should work in theory.

Cities will look like a bunch of dark colored smoothed floors. Maybe with an asterisk in the middle.
Forts that you can loot will look like grey beehives. I would post pictures, But I have to get to school.

Yup, I already identified the smoothed floor for cities. I'll keep my eyes open for grey beehives, thanks! The world I genned is a bit crap so I'll try on a new world later.

You have have been ninja'd but you explained how to do it. I was hacking of limbs when I was fighting, picking up the limbs then licking them. Tried to cook it on a fire but I just warmed it up then licked it again... Now I know how to butcher, I shouldn't die.

And yes, I'm currently using the Phoebus tileset. Was the first set I ever used so I haven't changed (my eyes blur if I play ASCII DF).

Well, to get yourself some armor, I recommend going to fortresses or the keeps of major cities. You can just take whatever you want without getting attacked.

I cannot find a keep/major city. I've tried spawning everywhere. Most places just have 'houses', others have hundreds of shops but I cannot find a keep. How come you can take without getting attacked? Isn't it stealing?

I spawn as a Human Demigod with:

High Strength
Superior Agility
Superior Toughness
High Endurance
Above Average Social Awareness

Skilled Swordsman (feel free to substitute a different melee weapon skill for this)
Competent Observer
Adequate Swimmer
Proficient Shield User
Proficient Armor User
Proficient Dodger

I then level Throwing to Legendary for shiggles.

I still can't beat anything. I can kill critters/wild life just fine but anyone with a sharp weapon will turn me to pieces... I haven't found a single piece of armour because I can't kill anyone who has armour. Even with Legendary Throwing (I'm guessing it has been nerfed), all I seem to do is bruise legs/arms as the only throwable thing I can find is dirt and rocks.

As I can't kill anything, I can't get any money so I can't get any food. If something hasn't killed me by about the third day, I usually give in to hunger. I tried picking berries but apparently there's no interaction. Water is not a problem.

Is there something I'm missing? I ask everyone in town if they want to join me but everyone just says, "I'd rather not...". I try to complete their quests but they're either so far away that I die of hunger or the person they want me to kill will tear me to pieces. I've read to find bandit camps as there's usually some easy armour/weapons but I don't know how to find it.

Oh and I read a lot of stories about people using bone weapons from things they've killed and other assorted items that I've never heard of (halberds is one). How do you get these and how do you tell which weapon is stronger? I'm only used to fortress mode where I rank things based on material (usually copper<iron<steel<candy).

After reading some posts, I'm guessing A LOT of people use mods for adventurer mode?

I thought of something completely different when I saw the title..  :-\

I pictured a fortress on a giant mechanical spider and thought, "Please let this be a 'How To' rather than a 'How'." Turns out it was neither :P

I can't stand to play DF on my Netbook so I can't imagine what it'd be like on a tablet/smart phone.

Cheating generally isnt fun though, however if you have specifically embarked for flux and it somehow happened to be above the magma sea under a huuuge cave of water then its fair game I think (happened to me once when I had played around with the generator). It is singleplayer after all.

Cheating is great for smashing out ideas/megaprojects/roleplaying. It just removes a level of 'hassle' as you clearly know what you're doing but it's just a waste of time finding the perfect embark/finding and gathering the resources.

You can embark with a hunter or build a wall in you city to avoid animals. For houses, i think comunal Houses a better idea, and make a Inn with food storage, booze, and dining hall in first floor and some rooms in top. Put all single dwarfs in this ;D

I was actually just doodling a layout for an Inn in a meeting >_>, it'll be a time/space saver at the start. Once I have enough dwarves to have a constant supply of blocks, I'll think about giving people their own house :P

I have never had one, and my squads have seen more then enough bloodshed. Hell, some of them are known for only having Forgotten beasts as kills, yet no name.

Do you frequently toggle your military on/off duty? Are their uniforms set to 'Any <item type here>'? If so, they're most likely equipping different items every time. I always equip my dwarfs manually, giving everyone their own designated piece of equipment for every slot. I think for them to name it, they have to use the same weapon for a long period of time.

I've actually never used burrows to that extent so that sounds fairly complicated. I've also never touched Minecarts as I haven't played since late 2010 D:.

The only new concept I really understand is wheelbarrows... Must construct additional wheelbarrows.

Haven't names been in for 1-2 years? I haven't played properly since late 2010/early 2011 and I've had plenty of named weapons.

No digging at all? That sounds hard, there's only so much wood on the map.

That reminds me, how can I get more trees if I cut them all down? I usually have metal/trade going by the time I ran out of trees but I've been embarking on smaller maps lately to avoid FPS death.

Another question I'll post here just in case. Can you butcher animals killed by your military? I'm interested in trying a more... Meat based approach (bored of spamming rock nuts and plump helmets), so I'd also like to know what type of biome has plenty of things to kill, preferably ones that are aggressive for a challenge.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Building a 'Village' above ground?

I thought it would be fun to plan out and build a village, using constructed walls/floors. My plan was to give each dwarf their own house, with the main floor consisting of a small storage with the workshops, then an upstairs for their personal bedroom.

Has anyone tried this? I'm already in to my second year and I have only just finished one building and dwarves are already tantruming from living outdoors and without bedrooms. It probably would have been a better idea to build the necessities indoors first and then move outdoors (they currently have no beds, no dining room, no nothing).

I had multiple masons to try and smash out as many blocks as possible but with the recent hauling changes, it is taking forever to get enough blocks to build a building (takes even longer as the ones making the blocks are also the ones placing them...). Especially as you have to floor off the entire z-level above the walls for it to count as 'indoors'. My biggest problem is I wanted the walls/floor to be consistent so I needed the same type of block for every wall. I've just realised typing this that I could have made the rock/block stockpiles only accept the stone I was using to limit clutter/walking distance.

Another problem is everyone gets interrupted by even the smallest wild animal as most of the dwarves are running around the surface world. I'm starting to think it's a futile idea as dwarves are much happier all round if they're underground.

The wiki has a great guide.

Just read that guide, covers a lot of stuff that was getting me killed before. Going to try Adventure Mode again thansk to that :)

Also, is it still possible to collect a bunch of rocks and throw them underneath me over and over till I get legendary Throwing? I never got a chance to witness the hilarious antics of legendary throwing.
