DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Beastly Pressure Washer Defense System
« on: October 17, 2010, 11:42:29 am »
Hi all, just finished my first big project in my newest Fortress--a massive pressure washer. The best part is, it washes baddies 60 z levels into my first cavern.

It killed 9 gobbos at once (they clumped up like fools and kept walking into the stream) hilariously, and the only maintainence is taking five seconds to pump more water in (soon that too will be automated).

Anyone else used a pressure washer for defense? Surely there must be some of immense dwarfiness and power?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Skeletal Two-Humped Camel Assassin
« on: October 03, 2010, 03:15:34 pm »
Basically, I decided to challenge myself. Embarked to a terrifying saltwater area.

Skeletal Camels killed everyone (including my shield-and-axe bearing military dwarf).

Reclaimed.

A named skeletal camel from the last fortress spawned inside my Wagon the instant I started (it said it was an ambush). In an instant, it had struck down all of my animals and my military Dwarf.

Everyone scattered and it chased after my woodcutter. He didn't make it.

My miner made it underground into my fortress and I proceeded to set up a hermitage for him. The camel was far off on one corner of the map after finishing off that woodcutter, so my dwarves figured it would be ok to sleep at the other side of the map (I hadn't lasted long enough previously for farms or bedrooms, had only just set up my pump and irrigation shaft/well shaft).

That Skeletal Camel snuck up on the four sleeping dwarves and murdered them in their sleep. Apparently the horrid crunching noises and screams from their comerades less than 6 tiles away weren't enough to wake them.

My miner survived long enough for more migrants to arrive.

This fucking Camel killed another two recruits of my military.

I have come to the conclusion that this skeletal camel is an assassin sent by goblins to rid them of us once and for all.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Explosivity

I have heard people mention Booze Stockpiles exploding.

Is it possible? Are there explosions in Dwarf Fortress?

DF Suggestions / Pauldrons
« on: September 15, 2010, 08:00:50 pm »
Pauldrons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauldrons) would be an excellent addition to armour. Would provide excellent rigid shoulder protection (sick of having my dwarves' upper arms snapped like twigs through their crappy steel chain) and is the part of armour that makes the wearer look powerfully manly.

I feel like this needs little elaboration, but would be a great thing to see implemented.

DF Gameplay Questions / Anybody Else Pity Trolls?
« on: September 15, 2010, 07:36:50 pm »
In the past 6 sieges I have been put through, I have started to develop a bit of a soft spot for the poor trolls the gobbos drag along. Since they always seem to be equipped with nothing better than leather armour and rarely carry weapons, they are always horribly maimed and killed by whatever they go up against.

I had one poor bastard walk into a weapon trap which shot him with 20 wooden bolts--each breaking bones through his meager armour. He then stumbled into another trap, which cut off his horns, his nose, 4 fingers, a hand, and badly bruised his guts. He succumbed to the overwhelming pain, stumbled out of my traps, and proceeded to vomit... for 10 pages. He then died slowly over the next month. Worst part--he was a surgeon xD

The poor educated, unarmed bastards are forced to suffer agonizing deaths at the hands of us and our traps with little hope of hurting any competent dwarf. I pity them. Do you?

DF Gameplay Questions / Armour System Broken?
« on: September 10, 2010, 03:11:55 pm »
Hi all.

Been noticing some weird things goin on with the combat lately.

Whips seem to completely ignore armour and insta-gib whatever part they hit. Had a silver whip make it through Steel Plate and chain and still have enough power left to fracture a spine.

Also, it seems that ever since I put on chain as well as breastplate, the breastplate is no longer functioning. Copper spears are bruising my dwarves upper bodies through the chain, and the breastplate is either being ignored completely, pierced without it mentioning it, or there are holes in the breastplate that they are attacking though.

Some answers would be lovely, and if they really are bugs, fixes would be sweet. Thanks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help With Equipment
« on: September 08, 2010, 10:54:18 pm »
Hey all, having big time trouble with my army. Got two squads of 10 all equipped with full steel armour (breastplates, chain shirts, greaves, steel shields, gauntlets, high boots, helms--the works) and wooden crossbows and Steel Warhammers (the crossbows weren't given ammo so that they could become skilled hammerdwarves through sparring in my danger room without killing eachother). The problem is, I told them all to dump their crossbows (forbade them too) but they won't--not only that, but they refuse to use their masterful hammers in combat. Just lost 8 guys to 4 goblins with copper lashes and maces because their attacks with their wooden crossbows would be deflected by the goblins' goddamned leather cloaks!

Please help, losing 7 professional Hammerdwarves to stupid goblins with shitty weaponry was immensely painful.
