If you want the tunneling to be realistic, then the invaders would dig saps to collapse your walls. Also, i can see tunneling being amazing when Toady implents the semi-fluid stuff to sand. One minute poor ol' Jreengus is diggin' a sap, the next he's up to his nostrils in sand

Pretty much every map i've ever embarked on has had pools, I'm in .12 though so it may have changed, If you don't mind a bit o engineering, you could breach an aquifer and use that.
Edit: I believe that swamps may not have aquifers, oddly enough.

That's more or less the point behind a HELP! Dwarf gets sealed in, lever 1 pulled. Water flows, Dwarf gets lifted up. lever 2 pulled, drawbridges close and floodgates open, water is recycled through grates. This makes your fortress totally impenitrable, as the only way in is a lever operated tunnel.

Check out the LCS Wiki, It's got a pretty good starting guide.
To move around: ensure you have a squad selected (you'll see their names on the screen), and press f, then select a location and press w, to wait a day. To recruit, when on site, use the arrow keys to wander round 'til you encounter someone and talk to them, Select the A option. at first recruiting is hard, so i suggest going the vegan co-op and recruiting hippies. (I think it's in the University district)
