And, If one was going to impliment digging units, one could also make it so that a small group of siegers appear, appraise the defenses, and call for reinforcements with the correct equipment. OR, they could arrive, construct a war camp, and then begin to tunnel etc.

And then another shrubbery, and arrange them so that one is higher than the other and has a little path between them. Also hedgerows commonly had hawthorn berries and such growing on them, as well as providing a living space for small animals. So that could be a useful source of food.
