There's no real difference between you killing them or they dying in whatever other way (like ambushes). But your dwarfen civ will (unlike humans and elves) not go to war with you or take any other action . I'm not sure about the migrants, death counts definitely influence them, but how much I don't know.

It seems like not the order on the list, but the order in which they were added counts. Most often, this is by distance and thus by the list, but I just got a case where it's different.

This is Dwarf Fortress, where beards are chisels and cats are psychic supervillains.
But it's still a pity that we can't have dwarfen magma reactors.

If I remember correctly, the waterwheels didn't burn (those above magma shouldn't anyway as they are technically not on the same tiles).

Yes, magma has no such flow of any kind (tested with nethercap- and normal waterwheels, both submerged and over the magma; both for normal flow and teleporting flow by pumps).
