Had my HP slowly ground out of me over a few hours by nightly spider attacks, until I was finally killed.
Then I respawned, jumped down a worm hole to a different section of the map, and got instantly KO'd by a tentacle.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Too many cave-ins
« on: August 09, 2013, 06:33:15 pm »
Dwarves digging out the ground from beneath each other's feet shouldn't cause cave-ins. Cave-ins only happen when a tile is unsupported, and if you do it one level at a time the tiles should always be supported by the ground under them.
Do you think we could get screenshots?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Spewing Into Forge?
« on: August 09, 2013, 12:53:41 pm »
Are the channels below the highest level of the magma?
I had the same thing happen to me when I tried to make forges at the magma sea, with a magma pipe leading up to the third cavern.

I'm not sure what would be causing this, but if I had to guess I'd say it has something to do with how magma pipes and volcanoes refill themselves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Starting a thriving metal industry

Speaking of which, I've started a new fort, where I'm tunneling down to the magma sea early.  But knowing the frequency and danger of the caverns, I used DFHack to reveal all, so I could find a clear shaft down.  So my suspicion is that going to the magma sea early, using default play, isn't a reliable method.  It's a good way to bring in fun from the caverns early on.

So to doublecheck....  A persistent, independent metal industry is not easy to get started in default play, not unless you chop a lot of trees.  Those who manage it via magma forges are actually getting lucky, or aren't playing default?  If I'm wrong here, then something is still missing, because otherwise it doesn't seem to add up.
I've never had any trouble with the caverns.
Just drill straight down. When you pierce a caverns, seal the hole in the ceiling by building an up stair over the up/down stair that pierced it. Then, find a solid pillar and go down through it.

I usually set up my forges down by the magma sea fairly early on. No pumpstacks for me!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Please explain the STONE screen to me
« on: August 09, 2013, 01:48:11 am »
So imagine I want only alunite to be crafted into stuff from my mechanic and mason, how do I do that? (Keystrokes, workshops?)  :-\
First create a stockpile. [p]->[ENTER]->(move)->[ENTER]
Then, [q] over the stockpile and check its [s]ettings. Enable stone, but disable all of it except alunite.
Set the stockpile to give to the workshops. [q] over the stockpile and press [g], then center over a workshop and press [ENTER]. Repeat for every workshop.

[v] over the dwarves and check their [i]inventory. If they're actually holding the spears, they should use them eventually.

Place Squishee on crystal. Have Squishee mimic crystal. Examine results.
Ask the others what is up. Read the Engraved Pedestal.

You have SQUISHEE mimic the HEXAGONAL CRYSTAL. He is able to replicate its shape and color, but not its luminescence nor its translucency.

You ask the group if they have discovered anything about the room.
CHARLIE and JESSE have been examining the ENGRAVED PEDESTAL; they report that while the pedestal is very sturdily constructed, it is uninteresting save for the message engraved upon it. The message reads:
Submit Proof
Of Your
Mortal Ancestry

JAMES reports that his THIEF-SENSE detects a rather large amount of overlapping enchantments blanketing the crystal, such that he cannot tell what any one of them do. The crystal itself is also strange; when looking through it, he can see the other, smaller crystals, but not JESSE, CHARLIE or the PEDESTAL. He has heard of certain minerals with a similar property, but they aren't found in this part of the continent.

Have Squishee assume Crowbar Form and ask Jesse to use his WARRIOR MIGHT to pry a few light crystals off the wall as bonus loot to split.

You pry a LIGHT CRYSTAL from a wall. You expected it to be held to the wall in some way, but it actually comes off without any resistance.

Behind the crystal is a small hole, about an inch in diameter.

You remove all of the LIGHT CRYSTALS, for five in total. Two more of them concealed holes, while two did not.
They are heavier than they look, and continue to emit light even when separated from the wall.
