I'm saying it's probably flooding.  I can't see it yet, as I can't dig into the cotton candy to find the stick considering it's full of aquiferness.

So how do I dig wet candy?

Pumps.
Magma.
Magma pumps.

There's no possible way this can go wrong.

Back in 40d I had a fort where I kept finding goblin limbs wedged in the fortifications on the second and third floors of my guard tower. It was kind of annoying because nobody would collect them.

Did you have collect outside refuse on?

I was once doing a test in the arena pitting 50 dwarves against 50 dwarves with moderately better shields to see what effect quality had.  I decked them out in cotton candy armor, except I didn't know that you had to give them two gauntlets and two boots in the item list, cause each line only gives them one.

So all the dwarves went at each other completely armored except for their left hands and feet.

I had a pile of about 80 severed left hands+feet when the carnage ended.

My main issue with the default is it's not square.  So... anything that is square.

As for stone management, it just bugs me.  I'm kinda OCD about it.  I don't want to use hide, and I don't want to leave them laying around.  They just have to be filed away for use later.

Best thing you can do is just mass dump them into a custom garbage dump one square wide, preferably nearby the shops that use them the most.  It'll be a bitch to reclaim all that stone (unless you set up a macro) but it'll all be much more easily managed.

You can mass reclaim, you know that, right? You can't even mass dump without being in mass reclaim mode, it's the default setting after you hit d-b :P

I have one equation for you

Saltwater + triple aquifer layer = fun.

EDIT: Also Dwarf Therapist.

So... Wallpacked... the idea to cave-in past the aquifer didn't go so well (Read: complete disaster).  The poor suicide dwarf that was the first to remove the construction died, along with a dog that was too close.  Unfortunately I had to cave in past my food stockpile, so there's now a bajillion submerged plump helmets that are going to rot, but that's not too big of an issue.  There's also a SECOND dwarf skeleton here, but I can't even find the announcement proclaiming his death.  My last hope is to either expand my original breach in the first layer of the aquifer to a 7x7, which would require a lot of drowning and pretty much rebuilding the entire system and starting from scratch at an entirely new site... or abusing the fact that the map freezes for all of like 20 days in winter, where I get to frantically work past the ice and pray that no one gets entombed or drowned.

EDIT: Passersby were amazed by the unusually large amounts of blood.

THIRD straight posession, maybe this one won't end with a suprisingly powerful dwarven child punching up all my dogs.

Going to need an alternate plan to get through the 3 layer aquifer, all the work I put into the current method... turns out I didn't leave enough room for pumps to get down through the third level.

So I'm just gonna drop the ceiling in and see what happens.

EDIT: Whew, just a black bronze artifact trumpet...

EDIT2: What the hell... a flock of vegetarian buzzards absolutely swarmed my above ground farm and made off with all the berries.

There's a file in the same folder as the init.txt, called announcements I think.  Find the Cave-in message and remove the P from it

I just throw shields at them and see if they'll use both at once.

Do you have two levels of aquifer? You could just drain one into the other and that would get your flow.

Dear Urist McPumpDeconstructor,

I realize you are willing to show off your unCarpentry skills in excellent fashion by dismantling and moving these screw pumps so we may continue to wall up the aquifer.  However, upon dismembering a screw pump into it's components, and then hauling them off to the nearby stockpile for storage until they are reconstructed, let me make one thing clear.

Don't drown your damn way through the flooded aquifer level and then drop your corkscrew right in the middle of it in your attempt to get to the stockpile.

It's a very small breach, 6x6 at best.  And all the water tiles are tagged as restricted, so GO AROUND.  But no, you chose to be Urist McPhelps and swim.  So now you're drenched and I have a corkscrew two levels down that I have to replace.

Please enjoy your future as a Buzzard Hunter.

Signed,
Your Overlord

If you can steal a whip, and are using the default RAWs, lashes are extremely powerful.

Back on topic.  From my experience (and mostly my opinion) the more important skills are defensive than offensive.  Dwarves can also spar with their preferred weapons and both will get skill in their own individual choices (Just don't give them weapons that are really good.)

I always turn off stone hauling for miners, but other than that everyone pitches in.

The only fort I got to the pop cap was a 40d one, and I had about 80 homeless haulers cause I didn't have anything interesting on the map besides the odd 100 goblin siege that the two military dwarves could kill without breaking a sweat.

I ended up flooding that one out of boredom... took a long time too.

Ah... didn't think of that... not near the ocean at all though.  There is a lake upstream of the river, but I didn't even embark in that region.

Do pumps still desalinate?

I tried, on the pools, on the river, none of it would take.  They all said Water Source (0)
