DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:22:49 pm »
Well that was fast.

This map is coated in water, so when people started getting thirsty, I figured it was just a case of not having booze, ordered some booze made, and went back to damming up the aquifer.

Apparently dwarves won't drink from murky pools, running rivers, nothing.  I even tapped a murky pool and flooded the farms again and that didn't do anything.

So there's a massive swath of deaths from dehydration, and I figure I'm doomed.

LO! MIGRANTS!

The entire original fortress died off about 2 minutes after 20 migrants showed up.

Wallpacked lives on...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Aquifer handling

I've never tried an aquifer map before, and I accidently embarked without any stone... but that's besides the point.

I've got a 3 layer aquifer, two layers of sand, and one of stone.  What's the best/easiest/least Fun way to get through it?  I have plenty of wood to use.

Outpost Wallpacked has started! Strike the earth!

Strike the Earth movement halted by aquifer layers... not one, not two, but three, and two of them are sand.  This is going to be Fun.

The underlying mechanisms might've been forbidden too

Yes!

They claim it's Turing complete too.

DF Modding / Re: DFHack 0.5.0.2 - tools and memory access library

Would it be relatively trivial to comment out the actual revealing portions of DFreveal and just use the pausing function through MSVC10?  I'd like a straight DF pause toggle switch for various reasons, and in some of them keyboard input won't cut it compared to writing to the memory space directly.

And inevitably...

The !!Mountainhome Project!! !  Starring Urist McOppenheimer!

I tend to just punch a hole in the ceiling over the magma sea and put the smelter and such so that an impassable part of the workshop blocks the hole.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fountains?
« on: October 13, 2010, 11:05:07 am »
The pump under the lake wouldn't pressurize it to a level higher than the fountain so it wouldn't flow up there... but if it fills up the entire thing with water then I guess it might force water higher? Or just stop pumping.

130
There's one demonic fort per region.  Do a mega 16x16 embark, find the sword, then do a smaller embark around it.

Dear Urist,

Please note that in the future it is considered good form not to drown with our only pick.

Regards,
Rest of the dwarves who would be digging you a grave.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Another neub qeustion.

There are ways to turn ice back into water, even in the tundra. Magma is a easier solution, as you only need to make it (and keep it) flowing under the ice to keep the water liquid. It won't unfreeze the top layer, however, but you can access it by digging to it.

You mean like having a pipe full of magma separated by one z with the frozen water on top will melt it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: wooden shields
« on: October 12, 2010, 09:56:17 pm »
I just staged a pitched 50 on 50 battle, all cotton candy armor, iron spears, and feather wood shields on one end and steel shields on the other.  Identical skills (Competent fighter/armor/shield/spear).

Thirty-nine dwarves survived on the steel end.  All feather woods were slain.

EDIT: There's a fair deal of moderate and major wounds on the steel end though.  At least 3 will bleed out shortly.

EDIT2: Curiously a large number of them are missing left hands and nothing else but moderate wounds.  They were all left handed so the shield was on the right, but both hands should've been protected by a cotton candy gauntlet, and iron spears should have a bit of difficulty there....

EDIT3: Apparently I have to spawn 2x gauntlet in the item list, no wonder so many people were losing hands and feet.  Incidentally this would explain a lot, because everyone was losing their weapon hand... and as I said earlier, higher shield quality = higher bash damage.

Magma Mountain crumbled to an end when the game crashed on hour 44 of execution (which I believe was like one dwarf day from embark).  Which is kinda good because the only pick the dwarves had was submerged in magma near my failed attempt to dig an emergency bunker.  When I saw the tide would outpace his digging, I quickly ordered an up stair and a down stair to be built so he could escape.

He finished the up stair at least.

Now back to your regularly scheduled dwarf fortress, without 2000z towers of adamantine, glowing pits of hell exposed to the rays of the sun, and magma raining down pretty much everywhere.

It's hard to do a dwarven breakdance without any floor too.
