« on: February 22, 2011, 04:29:37 am »I recall trying to get this to work with a weapon, and increasing the size of the weapon doesn't have enough of an effect to warrent the speed loss unfortunatly.
Brought an arenadwarf down to I think double digit speed and I think the opposing goblin may have flown a single tile, if that.
I'd love to hear how to get this to happen if anyone manages it.
Just make a new weapon. Super-fast platinum war hammer. Name it Mjöllnir.

Flying the Wildcat is wonderful, not because it's well armed or fast or agile, but because it's built like a tank and it's one of the few airplanes I can actually reliably put onto a carrier deck.

Edit: to be honest, most people in the online community are pretty awful. Relatively speaking at least. You lose nothing trying, and at least theres the main chat with the 500 geeks ready to argue about anything.

Thoughts on where to go after Dutch East Indies...
To be able to wage war as long as possible, we need to make the Amis invade from the sea, without land support. Should they have bases left in New Guinea or nearby islands, that is not good, because those can provide land-based air support and act as preparations bases as well support their operations rearming, maintaining and refitting naval and land units.
Any island sort of Australia left for the Allies will enable them to launch an "island hopping" campaign. This is why it is important to advance as far as possible as quick as possible. If they cannot simply walk to their objectives nor have the operational basis for their future offensives, they will have to spend 3-4 months preparing, risk losing at the beaches as well as use their carriers. Allies WILL be ready for an offensive January 43 or 3 months before that. That means I have 5 months to secure all of New Guinea at least, and try to push as far the Solomons, maybe as far as Fiji. I doubt I'll make as far as Fiji, but its possible.
The Dutch East Indies on the other hand needs to be turned into a fortress of defensive perimeters, air and naval base network with vast amounts of supply in reserve. The southern Sumatra I already have is already in the process of being built up and prepared...
Immediate targets for the next 3 weeks:
Southern Front:
a) Kendari
b) Ternate
c) Java
Western front:
c) Moulmein -> Pegu -> Rangoon in Burma
d) Sian in China
Eastern front:
d) Wake Island
The failure to secure Wake is so far the worst setback. Aerial reconnaissance reports the Enemy to have around a dozen ships, destroyers, a cruiser and transports, there. It needs to be re-invaded before its too heavily fortified.
edit: also just realised that the 10 subs I have off the West Coast US and Canada have so far seen just ONE patrol aircraft, and even that was a float plane one probably from a cruiser. if this trend continues a West Coast raid would indeed be tempting after all...

For some reason the only dorf names from any fort I have remembered for more than a couple of days were from my first "proper" fort, Wheelcrowds. This is the story of Ralf, or Ralph, Endotekkun.
Member of the military and a Sworddwarf, Endotekkun, wearing all-steel like the rest of the military, he arrived the fort in the 1st wave. He blonged to my 2nd squad.
This squad's captain position was apparently cursed. The first leader leaped into the river. In the second battle, the second ramboed 2 squads of goblins and was killed. Third battle and a 3rd leader drowned. 4th battle and while victorious against a Troll 1 on 1, he died drowned when the ice beneath him melt. These were also the ONLY drownings I the fort. Always the leader of the second squad.
Now this Endotekkun the Sworddwarf. It was his turn to be the captain, and all his 21 pet cats probably went ecstatic over it. Despite the cats I liked this Dwarf, and wanted to keep him alive. I made sure that of the 60 military Dwarves, the squad B would be the last to be sent into the battle, and that I would rush over the moat and close in only after using the cave-in trap and some of the weapon and cage traps.
Then, the 12h year of the fort, came another siege. Odd 90 Goblins, typical. I gave my military the go signal, without using the cave-in trap. The 60 Dwarves rushing over across the bridge, to the traps and go through the goblins easy - only one recruit was lost. This 5th leader of the Squad B approached the battlezone when there were just a couple of mêlée Goblins left and a squad of crossbow Goblins behind them. The battle was now on the he cave-in trap, out of the outer wall that was also used to rebuild the trap after use, and 2 Goblins were shooting across the trap on the approaching Dwarves that would run on the wall and then back down, under the cave-in trap where battle went on. The rest of the crossbow-goblins were shooting the dwarves beneath the trap.
The Goblin's aim was very poor. The 2 that kept shooting the Dwarves appearing on the top of the wall missed all their targets. One of the copper bolts however happened to be in the right place in the right time. The goblin missed the recruit(he had already leaped down from the wall), but as the leader of the squad B, poor Endotekkun climbed on the wall, and got hit by the bolt. In the throat, the only only place the armour leaves him vulnerable. Goodbye Endotekkun...
Talk about bad luck.

The mechanics are pretty unclear. Or at least the PBW service misses very important parts in the setting up part of the game.
