DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why not use a graphics mods?
« on: December 18, 2010, 06:53:29 am »
Okay, so we're happy it's each to his own but there is a slightly larger consensus that tilesets make it more likely to capture an audience, people that would simply ignore or walk away from ASCII format.

So, to that extent should DF be twinned with a tileset and have the option to activate it in game? Should Toady, whilst not wanting to hire outside people, at least look at the idea of teaming up with a realiable and good tileset (As voted for by community, say) and that becomes a toggle option on startup?

Thinking here not about selling the game later on (That would be a big help towards that though should he ever take that path) but also simply allowing new people the chance to grasp the game mechanics quicker. I tried DF ages ago, hated the ASCII thing and sacked it off. Far too confusing. I came back because someone mentioned I could get tilesets.

Why not integrate that to make it an easier option?

I see DF as a brilliant game, one of the most involving and genius games I've ever played. I feel more people would love it if only it were more accessible. I want to bring people into this game that I know would love it but trying to convince a friend to get into it when the first thing they see is ASCII is difficult to say the least and it's just laborious to have to explain each time about adding in a tileset to make it accessible.

If Toady's primary goal was to make quick cash he probably would focus on graphics/user interface instead of game depth, thankfully that is not the case (I like minecraft but for a while there after it got popular the creator spent more time gladhanding gaming websites then actually improving his game).

We know it's not his primary goal unless he has some secret master plan he's working on, but it would all be a tidy circle. Money = improved development time (By hiring help or focusing 100% on the job at hand and not worry about real work :) ) = more game features = more money.

Then he can get the fast boats and faster women.

Lets be fair to the Minecraft bloke though, if I turned that rich that quickly, I'd have to seriously think about what I was doing with my time. Gaming programming, perhaps not so much. :)

I can't remember which mod I use, how do I check? Everything is replaced with actual representative graphics. Very good, looks gorgeous.

Because many of us prefer the simplistic, ASCII-esque graphics. Plus the fact that simpler graphics free up power for the computer to focus on behind the scenes stuff.

Understand that, totally.

However, isn't this just cutting off a huge chunk of potential playerbase (and thus ipso facto, income if a price were to be applied)?

Many people don't complain as such, but do wish things would move a long a little bit faster on the dev side of the game.
Revenue is the solution to that.

Minecraft is a brilliant example. A year in development, £10 to buy it during that development phase, then free upgrades and patches for the duration of the development span. When release is due later in 2011 it jumps to £20 to buy, same rules apply. Read up on this, it's a phenomenon. One man in his bedroom, (Sound familiar?) more or less overnight millionaire.

Just wondering if it's an option. One that could be very rewarding for everyone involved.

Hihi,

So looking at various posts and threads with screenies of someones DF map, I did wonder to myself just now why more people don't use a graphic mod?

I installed one on day two of playing DF and I have to say, it just transforms the whole game. Apart from making it prettier it just makes it so easy to see at a glimpse what's happening instead of having to recall what various symbols mean.

Just curious as to why more people don't use one?

Look at minecraft. It's exploded and made its creator a millionaire in under a year because it's accessible. DF has that potential. It's had a feature in PCGamer which whilst it raves about it, the vast majority of folk aren't going to touch it because it looks inaccessible from the screenshots.

Wondering if Toady maybe needs to look at officially incorporating one of the very good graphic mods out there?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Caverns

When you come across a cavern that ends at the edge of the screen without a visible border can enemy come from that direction? I'm walling off to make sure but want to know for general info.

Cheers!

I've got Magma and all sorts of good stuff, found lots of caverns and have excavated them all, they're more or less empty.

Last night I was about to start attacking caravans when a Hydra rocked up. Got all excited, crashed out the military but my 40 odd war dogs were all over him like a tramp on chips. The worst thing to come up from down below was a Cave Crocodile which got stomped on in quick order.

I just don't seem to be getting any attention. :(

My secretary has been a bit lazy getting these sent out, so there's a few:

Dear Urist McMiner

When you are set a project I expect that project to be completed in a timely, orderly fashion.
I hope it is understood that if I set you another project, that it is part of the grander scheme of things and so it is taken into consideration that you are already on another project. This works around the timeline the Company operates to and as such, we expect you to complete your original project before moving on to the new job.

If you are found to have abandoned a current project to move onto something else you will be henceforth stripped of your pickaxe, your rights to food and beverages and will be sent on Titan Handling duties until further notice.

Sincerely,

Management

----

Dear Urist McHunter

Your efforts at the fortress are appreciated. You have consistently returned home with numerous trophies and kills, all of which have helped the prosperity of the fortress and allowed everyone to partake of some fine meat cuts, as well as giving our chefs a healthy supply of food with which to work.

However, if in future you continue to refuse to pick up your own bolts, still serviceable, and then complain that you cannot hunt as you have no more ammunition, you will be sent down to the Monster Exercise Yard where you will have to kill the Hydra using only your bow. Without any ammunition. As you couldn't be bothered to pick it up again.

Sincerely,

Management

------

Dear Urists,

In future, pets are not allowed to be adopted or taken at random. Anyone owning a pet is to hereby hand it over to the Animal Trainer who will decide if the animal can be utilised or if not, whether the Butcher has free time to take care of the problem. Pets are not only a hygiene issue they are also causing allergic outbreaks amongst certain members of the community and as such, will be removed with immediate effect.

Sincerely,
Management

----

Dear Urist McImmigrants,

If you arrive at my fortress unannounced and expect to be given shelter, food and drink, then accept that you have no right to complain if you are told to share three beds between fifteen of you. If you do attempt to integrate into the community it is strongly advised you find a trade, quickly, or you will find yourself enroled into permanent military service. The terms of service are full enlistment with meals and drinks supplied. The duration of the service term is until death. Promotion is available to thsoe who do not die.

Sincerely,

Management

Okay, thanks for the heads up guys. I've just stationed my forces at the Trade Depot to give a warm reception to the next caravan to arrive. :) I'll let you know how it goes.

Sounds like an idea. I've read on the Wiki that if I cause enough aggro they should siege me annually. Is this right?

Is stealing stuff guaranteed to work or should I just kill them all? If I'm going to start this I want to start it right. :)

Just dissapointed no real bad guys have shown up. :(

All that good stuff, not on an island, middle of the map with plenty of other locations not too far away. Had humans, dorfs and elves all show up and sell me their wares. I'm quite renowned for the sheer amount of crap I have to sell to any caravan that can take it all.

Just no real enemy. Thus wondering if it's time to make some out of friends.

Should I be? :)

The only bad thing to happen was a Hydra got into my administration block and killed most of my top men before my death squads managed to run from the industrial sector and smash it.

So I've built a few levels, everyone's happy, the fortress is stocked up with everything I ever need and I've found caverns but no monsters.

What is the easiest and quickest way to start a fight with another race? What can I then expect from them? My military is reasonably well established. Can I take them out to fight the enemy or what? Just want to do something interesting with my fortress as the game doesn't really offer much in the way of challenge once you're established. You have to use your imagination. Considering I built an entire level into one big mega-trap-death-kill zone that any beasts from beneath have to get through, I'm fairly safe from downstairs, but I've left my doors wide open to let any enemy come straight in. Will they do this? I have no idea what to expect.

Cheers!

DF Suggestions / Re: Can we have homosexual dwarves?
« on: September 23, 2010, 06:33:50 am »
Because the game is not finished. If the day ever comes when Toady stands up and says;
"DF is now as envisaged, all aspects of gameplay has been taken care of, there are no bugs, (Dreaming here) we even have Multiplayer capability.... Would anyone like to see anything else?"

Then I'm happy for the hand to go up and ask for gay Dwarfs. Until that time, it's just a waste of thread space. My own opinion, and opinions always differ.

Wow, you don't like homosexuals do you?

I'm in the armed forces, there are loads of homosexuals in here, I get on fine with them, go to war with them, go clubbing with them, but really, does it have to even be discussed as a possible feature for a game such as DF? I think DF has far more important areas that need worked on instead of deciding whether the phrase 'I'm off to do some mining' should take on a new, kinky slant. :)
