Okay, so we're happy it's each to his own but there is a slightly larger consensus that tilesets make it more likely to capture an audience, people that would simply ignore or walk away from ASCII format.
So, to that extent should DF be twinned with a tileset and have the option to activate it in game? Should Toady, whilst not wanting to hire outside people, at least look at the idea of teaming up with a realiable and good tileset (As voted for by community, say) and that becomes a toggle option on startup?
Thinking here not about selling the game later on (That would be a big help towards that though should he ever take that path) but also simply allowing new people the chance to grasp the game mechanics quicker. I tried DF ages ago, hated the ASCII thing and sacked it off. Far too confusing. I came back because someone mentioned I could get tilesets.
Why not integrate that to make it an easier option?
I see DF as a brilliant game, one of the most involving and genius games I've ever played. I feel more people would love it if only it were more accessible. I want to bring people into this game that I know would love it but trying to convince a friend to get into it when the first thing they see is ASCII is difficult to say the least and it's just laborious to have to explain each time about adding in a tileset to make it accessible.
