Ranged or a stray kitten should do it.

Do Not. DO NOT use your melee unit. They will one shot it, but as soon as it dies, it will explode killing all of them.

I don't know about the glitch, but the water laced with water is perfectly normal: the blood and body parts of the ice and snow f.b. turned into water, but it is their water so the game tracks it when it mixes with any old cavern water.

Backpacks are mandatory.  Period. If you play adventure mode, you know why: a backpack allow you to switch items without dropping them.

Without a backpack, a dwarf has a lot of trouble equipping anything that takes more than two hands, especially if you, say, order it to equip five shields, twelve cloaks, an artifact boot and a pair of silver daggers in addition to its normal uniform.

If you've been cranking out steel masterwork and your militia commander is going to war wearing a helmet and civilian clothes, it is likely because you didn't make backpacks.

That amulet of guardian spirit is going to get you killed. Every last one of Lugonu's escape powers depends on mana and you won't have any mana just when you need it most.

They need backpacks too.

odds are he climbed out somehow, especially if you were removing stairs. Since climbing is in the game, isolating an area is harder

I find it helps to build a removable scaffolding. Bonus points if you can "remove it" all at once with the pull of a lever. Use of bridges recommended.

NOO! They do not have to be set to inactive. That piece of bad info has been floating around forever, but it's not true.

For marksdwarves to train at the targets, the following must be true:
An archery target must be set as a room, and assigned for the squad with the marksdwarves to (T)rain
The archery target must be set for the correct direction (Fire from north, fire from south, etc)
There must be bolts available, and the squad must have bolts assigned to them.
The squad needs crossbows.

I am less sure about the following items, but I always do these things:
Put a bed in the room with the archery targets, set that as barracks assigned to the marksdwarf squad.
Make quivers for all the dwarves.

When I do those things, my Marksdwarves do a lot of target practice, while on active/training duty.

Alternatively, forget about the targets and order your marksdwarves to kill the local wildlife.  Live practice works very well!  You might get annoyed with all the bolts laying around everywhere though.

Really odd, the inactive trick is how I trained my marksdwarfs just a few versions ago (40.19), worked for me then...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Are night creatures immune to traps or not

In previous versions creatures residing in their own lairs were immune to all traps even if they normally were not.

I really like the design, the art and the powers.

I worry about the sanity stuff though, because while the code of of honor is interesting, it might lead to a snowball effect. E.g. you get hurt bad in a fight and run, which hits your sanity, which summons a shadow monster who hurts you, so you run, losing sanity etc.

I loved the Temple quests: it was nice to go on pilgrimage for rp purposes and worked amazingly with Atronach: praying at shrines triggered absorb magicka for some reason, and since the spells the shrines cast are absurdly long lasting they would instantly regenerate your mana pool.

Really felt like a holy warrior coming to restore my mojo, every time I prayed.

I got attacked in the .19 fort, I think they just take longer and don't have the same scripted conditions for coming.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Necromancy
« on: December 26, 2014, 03:56:09 pm »
Since all undead have [OPPOSED_TO_LIVE], I'd imagine they would still attack every living being they can.

(Necromancers are not counted as "living")

This doesn't seem true anymore. In my old necromancer fort the undead killed everything except other undead, but recently this has not held.  E.g there is a thread (and Ive had it happen too) with numerous examples of zombies showing up with elves or humans, living and not necromancers, but allied.  It seems Toady rewrote some aspect of undead loyalties and now they are no longer hostile to the living in their own faction.

The problem is that only the zombies that the necromancers bring with them are of the same alliance of the necromancer, all other zombies (Like the zombies of other necromancers or the zombies they raise after getting to your fort)  are just the same as the old version.

This makes sense, but has anyone tried to see what happens if a member of your fort does the raising? It might remain friendly...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Cannot Mine adamantine
« on: December 26, 2014, 03:54:09 pm »
HFS is the reason you mine adanantine. Do NOT GOOGLE OR WIKI IT
, it's for your own enjoyment, okay?

The HFS is by far the biggest surprise I ever had in DF.
So I cleared up all the lava issues. You don't have to answer this, but do you think "HFS" is something 10 markdwarves and 32(EDIT:22) war dogs can handle?

Having once lost a fort with three full candy legendary melee squads backed by eighty dwarves with crossbows, I cringed reading this question.
