DF Gameplay Questions / Cheese has no quality?
« on: October 04, 2017, 03:26:42 am »
One of my recent fort immigrants happened to be a Great Cheesemaker. When he made cheese I noticed that it has no quality modificators. I'd expected at least some fine quality cheese. If someone can confirm that cheese is like tread or milk without quality modificators, I'd add that info to the wiki.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What is your favourite population cap?

How many dwarves do you prefer to play your long term fortresses with? I'm trying to play with 80 but the immigration influx in my last fortress was so quick that we got into troubles.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can you encrust furniture?
« on: September 24, 2017, 05:30:11 pm »
I am preparing the royal chambers. I have a stockpile of cut gems and a stockpile of furniture made of gold. When these stockpiles give things to a jeweler's workshop. Yet when I queue encrusting jobs, they get cancelled due to lack of encrustable items. Why? I thought you could encrust furniture, can't you?

It's been several years since I started using magma for forging and I never had problems with magma crabs and similar critters. Only recently I have started using my magma trap and I regularly open magma locks (kind of like ship locks, just for filling magma for the trap). And it's about since that time I keep seeing magma crabs too often. Although I don't see them flow in with the magma, ytet they somehow always manage to creep in. It's as if they would occasionally even spawn somewhere randomly deep down in the fortress, close to the magma levels, etc. It's weird.

So far they did not do major harm, but I see it as a risk nevertheless. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Trained Ospeys don't breed
« on: June 09, 2017, 10:30:51 am »
I have captured a couple of ospreys and trained them. When I released them from their cages on a pasture with a nest box, the female instantly laid eggs, but they were not fertilized. Two years later, they ospreys haven't mated and the female has not laid eggs since. Why is that?

DF Gameplay Questions / Safety stockpile of water buckets
« on: May 31, 2017, 10:38:26 am »
I'm playing with magma and I feel a little unsafe seeing all the firesnakes spawning inside magma maintenance facilities. Dwarfs are just walking by the snake and I think it's just a matter of time until one of them gets bitten and catches on fire.

Would it help to have buckets with water stored nearby? How do I store buckets with water? Are there such stockpile properties? What safety measures should I use?

I have protected pastures, animals were grassing there. Then a siege came which I haven't been able to get rid of in months. The animals are getting hungry. Why don't they eat? Why is this happening?

DF Gameplay Questions / Classical pump stack does not transmit power?
« on: March 13, 2017, 04:09:25 pm »
I have built a 4-level pump stack, like this one from the wiki, just without the top level.

Spoiler: PumpStack2010.png (click to show/hide)

I have doublechecked that there is an open space tile below the impenetrable pump tile. There really is, on all levels, except for the lowest.

Now I wanted to try this pump stack running dry, pumping air before I flood it. I have one dwarf powering the lowest pump. The lowest pump is animated, but the pump directly above it stands still. It says it needs 80 power but is getting 0 power. The k-cursor clearly shows open space below the output end of the pump and floor below the input end.

What am I doing wrong? Does this sort of pump stack work at all? I think I had it working once in a 34.x version, but didn't try since then.

I hope that the dwarf sitting at the input end of the lowest level is not somehow blocking the power transmission, because the open space through which the power should propagate is directly above his head.

DF Gameplay Questions / Who is a Warlord?
« on: March 12, 2017, 04:21:57 pm »
I just got the message (which paused the game) that Zulban Tourshores, being the rightful heir, has inherited the position of warlord of the Triangular Arch.

Who is a warlord? Zulban is not listed as a noble in the fortress. There is no wiki article about a warlord either.  :-\

DF General Discussion / [SOLVED MYSTERY] Loading bar. Not randomized?
« on: March 03, 2017, 03:40:44 pm »
When you load a game in DF or when you are about to generate a new world, for a brief moment a loading bar is being typed out on the screen which looks like this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I first thought that it'd be randomized, but it appears to be always the same. It looked like this in 43.03., it looks like this in 45.05, no matter which game you're loading, you always can notice the sequence of yellow JJJTTT.

Does anyone know why this isn't randomized? It seems like a perfect place to put some random tiles or signs in. Does this particular sequence mean anything? Is it an encrypted secret message?

Tilesets and Graphics / 300% Curses (curses_1920x900)
« on: March 01, 2017, 01:18:13 pm »
For all fellow ASCII-philes: I am currently playing with 3x upscaled curses_640x300 (tile dimensions 8x12), which results in curses_1920x900 with tile dimensions of 24x36. It nicely fills a FullHD screen at 80x30 or, if you play windowed, it's 80x29. It took me a couple of hours to get used to it and I think I might stick with it for a while.

The text in dwarven thoughts and item descriptions is much more readable than in any square-tile tileset. For the map looks, I prefer my own square-tiled Nagidal Tileset which looks like a cleaner version of the original, but for the reads curses_1920x900 are superior, I think. So grab it from the wiki or upscale your own. Strike the earth!

DF Gameplay Questions / What happens if you choose not to become a barony?
« on: February 26, 2017, 07:39:28 pm »
Has anyone ever chosen option b of the liason's dialogue "Flattering, but we'd rather maintain our distance from the homeland"?

What happens then? Will you still get migrants, will you still be able to trade with your mountainhomes? Will your mountainhomes allies still be your allies? Will your dwarves be happy? Will your mayor or expedition leader rule forever?

DF General Discussion / About Dwarf Fortress
« on: February 26, 2017, 07:45:18 am »
A couple of months ago I was asking some questions on the forums and mentioning I was preparing a short presentation about Dwarf Fortress. Thanks for your replies, especially to FleetingFrames and PatrickLundell. The presentation was good, so I decided to refactor it into a short youtube video about Dwarf Fortress.

DF General Discussion / Visit to a dwarfy exposition in Bernburg

Here's a report of my today's trip to the mineral exposition in Bernburg Castle. It is a small exposition but surprisingly rich on things found in Dwarf Fortress.

DF Gameplay Questions / Can you make magma pumps safe?
« on: February 20, 2017, 06:33:34 pm »
Summary: Is there a way to power magma pumps without the risk of having the pumps and the powering machinery (or pump operators) destroyed by building destroyers from the magma sea?

Long version: For my magma trap I want to use a magma lock system, where I'd temporarily store magma for the trap in secluded reservoirs. Now I sense danger from all the magma crabs, fire men and fire snakes living in the magma a sea.

If I use raising bridges to let the magma into the reservoirs, the magma would flow in very slowly. The creatures would have time to swim into the reservoirs and not leaving them for a long time. They might even destory the locking bridges while they are lowered.

If I use a magma-safe pump to pump the magma into the reservoirs, the magma would flow in much quicker, but how about the magma pumps? They need a source tile any creature can creep through (unless you have an artifact grate, perhaps?). These creatures would fight the pump operators or even set them on fire. And if I don't use pump operators, is there a way to power these pumps without the risk of having the pumps and the powering machinery destroyed by building destroyers from the magma sea?
