DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Adventure Mode Little Questions Thread
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:15:17 pm »
edit: the last 2 hours I was building up a new human, let him wrestle his way up to legendary, tried a few things to raise weaponskill, bought some nice stuff... then thought that swimming would build up agility nicley... then the fucking pool froze. At least I found a couple ways to improve..

Question: What am I doing wrong?
I recently started playing Adventure Mode. The latest release of the Lazy noob pack.
At first I started as hero, spent my points in str/agi/endu/toughness/a little in spatial/misc (I tuned down all the irrelevant skills such as musician, linguistics, etc)
For skills I chose swordsman/armor/shield/dodger/fighter/swimmer

Pretty straight forward.

The adventure started out fine, I did a couple quests, hired a couple mercs and set off into the distance.
I then got brutally murdered by a goblin crossbow man I didn't even see on screen. His bolt ripped through me, stunning me and then finishing me off.

I tried the same skills with exactly the same outcome. 4 - 6 quests, then sudden death after beeing unable to hit some Sahdowmonster for a couple turns.

I then tried demigod, invested the points in a similar matter and was, once again, this time a little later in game, slaughtered by a shadowmonster with a copper dirk. One turn I'm fine, next turn I'm in pain, bleeding, next turn I'm dead.

I know dying is a part of this game and I have no objections to this. Bus this seems kinda weird. Even in easymode (dmigod) with a sword (even more easy).

I noticed that I had big problems with hitting an enemy, most of them dodged, even on ground. I also noticed at some point that I hada shitload of crap in my hands. Does this have a negative effect on fighting (I promptly "p"ut them in my backpack)? I wasn't overloaded though and wore pretty decent gear in mostly all of my games until now. (at least I wore everything I found and didn't drop any vital armor piece)

So... am I missing something? Should I consider doing only certain quests from certain sources (fort/town/... if it even matters?), should I hunt wildlife or raise my skills in any other way?

As far as the basics go, I read the wiki articles, I am allways doing aimed attacks wich are easy/square or are marked as opportunistic (I think those are the, at least in LNP, attacks marked with a light blue exclamation mark).

cheers x

Was she a noble? Did you assign appropriate rooms/fill her mandates?

Not to my knowledge. No. Also, wouldn't her mood go down in a curve instead from plummeting from ecstatic to suicidal emo?
Even if she by accident filled a nobles spot I was constantly checking on my nobles demands and requirements. Since I couldn't spot any trouble there....

It's a mystery.  :o

No. I haven't reached any caverns yet. I'm kinda reluctant and am training military now. The fort is shut off with a raised draw bridge.
I had a visit from a 7 headed Dragon but it said nothing about poison or anything else, only beware its seven headed blabla...
The Merchants killed it with ease, I didn't even interfere.

Heya,

yesterday something very weird happened. I had an ecstatic dwarf go melancholic. I had no deaths, there was a shortage in Drinks at that time but I pumped out a hundret drinks pretty fast. No pets were slaughtered, no losses, no tantrums, a couple content military guys, that's all.

Does this happen randomly?
Goddamn dwarf is now creeping arround my stockpiles all depressed and useless >:/

Edit: I checked both ingame and Dwarf therapist for her. Both said she was ecstatic lately. And DT marked her with bright green (I forgot the exact Nubers). After the message and the pause the dwarf nearly instantly went into melancholy.. she was sitting in the meeting hall between a couple dozen dwarfs, noone else had any problems. Also she wasn't affected by a mood. wth

My girlfriend was mildly amused herself when I started splutring out how amazing and rich this game is.. caring for my dwarfs, let them make booze and have them be adopted by kittens...

But she plays a lot of sim city 4 and likes the whole "Sims" frenchise over all, so it was pretty easy to explain it. ;)

Something I didn't really figure out... when does a Room stop to be a room?

I often start with a large dining room (room for 40-60 Tables+Thrones) and from there I dig out apartments for those little 2x2 Bedrooms. Often the walls of the Dining room shrivel away as I start digging out all 4 directions (and sometimes even more). It ends up beeing more of an open hall than a room. Does this matter at all?

Let me guess: you've not hit your 3rd spring yet? It's only in the first year that you get guaranteed immigrants in summer and autumn. After that, you only get immigrants in spring. It's possible to get immigrants in other seasons still but it's very rare after the first year.

By the way, be prepared to step up from the stonecrafting industry. The trade caravans will bring more and more in response to you exporting more and more.

Hm. That's possible. I kinda lose track of time passing since I usually do a lot of research during the game and a lot of micromanagement. So it seems longer than it probably is.

these are some of the structures I like to use.

That could be a whole functioning mini fort for a start.

PS: Create your own. You are somewhat limited but this tool works online and sould suffice for stuff like this. http://pixie.strd6.com/creation/images/new

"outside refuse gathering" THIS will solve my Problem. I didn't touch that option so it's still on default. Thank you.

As for export and population. There are Dwarfs, Humans and Elves. (Caravans)
I do a lot of trade and buy pretty much everything. I started stonecrafting very early and allways have a shitton of stuff to trade. I usually pass on the fancy stuff like rare wood barrels for 2-5k .. but apart from that I usually go nuts.
I even keep the elves friendly, suckers prohibited chopping down trees to 120 a year. ;)

Next thing will be military... hooray.

Hi, first post. I allready read a lot and have to say, great community and fantastic game.
I played about 30 - 40 hours now.

I started 3 fortresses but since a lot of the action starts later in game I decided to stop starting new ones and stick with one.

Well the one I chose now is kind of strange. There are a couple of problems wich I just can't get solved.
The Fort is in a mountain area with scarce vegetation (but a couple Trees on the southern quarter since I chose to chip into that biome), the northern part is pretty much only stone wich pratically zero soil. (it's cold but the brook isn't frozen the whole year)

1. My refuse stockpile stays totally empty. There is not ONE single item/corpse on there. That can't be right? I have a lot of cats, I butchered a couple animals and at least SOME vermin would have found it's way into my fort... at least that's what I think. My dwarfs have refuse hauling enabled (not all of them but at least 70%)

2. My Butchery is a complete mess and totally cluttered. The meat was brought away and stored inside, the refuse Pile right next to it was again completely ignored and all the skulls, bones, hairs and crap stays inside the butchery no matter what. This is unnerving. How do I get that stuff out of there? I have a designated butcher as well as an animal dissector. I also built a kitchen just in case. Any Ideas?

3. Immigrants! My Fort has a lot of room, a relatively high wealth and is over all very inviting (a legendary engraver is going about his business, first smoothing, now engraving the living quarters). The first wave consited of 4 dwarfs. The second wave consited of 3 dwarfs if I remember correctly. The third wave consisted of 21 Dwarfs. Since then I had not a single wave of immigrants, 2 or 3 times the message "Your fort attracted no Immigrants this season" popped up.

Apart from that I'm pretty happy with my fort. Since there is no miasma I guess there just isn't any stuff that's rotting... so it can't be any forbidden garbage dump I forgot about.

cheers
