Thanks guys! I ended up creating a fort on the coast where I'm building a bridge across the bay but next, I'll create a new world with lot of rivers.

My bonecarver went mad because there were no shells available and died of dehydration. Unfortunately, she left a baby behind. Now, DFHack is warning me that the baby is starving and dehydrated. Will none of the other dwarves take care of the baby? Is the poor infant doomed?

It always worked like that.

Sorry, I worded my post wrongly. Before Premium, the gear list showed an item to be assigned to some other dorf but the Premium version currently does not do that. Hence, it is almost impossible to track which weapon/armour piece have already been assigned and the player ends up assigning the same steel helmet to multiple dwarves in a squad.

I did play 23 a little bit but the vast majority of time has been on the later versions and currently I'm very happily sticking with the Premium .50 version. I do agree that 23 probably was the most "gamified" version of DF and I have to admit that I have tried to recreate at least the starting position, ie straight up cliff wall to dig into, with very little success sadly. But as others pointed out, there have been plenty of new features introduced since then and I much prefer the vast simness and near endless possibilities of construction in the modern DF over the 'solve a puzzle to win until you miss one thing and die' style of the old.

Steel is still the safest choice vs normal enemies I guess?

The differences between platinum, steel and silver are so tiny that it really doesn't matter. As a rule-of-thumb, just make all your weapons from steel if you can and you're good to go.

I have a sarcophagus and the bones of a dwarf in it. However, the game does not show the sarcophagus, just the bones on that tile. Hiding the bones doesn't help. If I hide the copper coffin, then the bones become invisible too. But I'd rather admire the coffins populating my mausoleum at my fort's entrance. Am I doing something wrong or is this just the way the game is currently coded?

Also, when selecting which animal to put on a chain, the game does not tell me if any animal is already restrained somehow, which makes it very annoying to assign a large number of animal "alarms" around.

Back before the Steam version, it was easy to issue specific weapons and armour to each of my military dwarves, since the items changed colour in the menu if they had been assigned to another dwarf.

But on the Steam version, this does not seem to happen. I'm constantly running into a problem where I issue a helmet or spear to a dwarf that had already been assigned to another dwarf.

Am I stuck using the uniforms and hoping that they pick the right stuff up? Using specific pieces of kit in the past allowed me to circumvent pretty much all the bugs/issues with squad equipment.
