DF Bug Reports / [39e] military dwarves ignoring threat
« on: July 28, 2008, 10:29:51 pm »
The linked save will take you to an open area in which thirteen military wrestlers are stationed in a ring around a giant bat, at their z-level, which is busily ripping an armorer into chunks (in between bouts of passing out from exhaustion due to the zeal it puts into its dire work).

The military dwarves (on duty, set to harrass wildlife, and chase opponents) ignore the threat not two spaces away. If you can keep the military on-site long enough after opening the save, the half-a-dwarf armorer will be hauled off, and the bat will rip apart the military dwarves one at a time with no resistance offered.

This, after they dismembered a pack of goblins with their bare hands. Sad.

Sorry for bursting your bubble and being a bastard, but I can't see how this could be DF related.

There is *nothing* that is not related to DF. Meditate on this.

Let the band-and-DF-nerds connect. They are an inoffensive people, and may one day recreate the fall of Boatmurdered during a halftime show.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Site Finder
« on: July 23, 2008, 11:08:42 am »
Toady's Embark menu Site Finder is the best thing since minced beer. At least half my DF time since the z-axis came to be has been searching for, settling, and abandoning sites trying to find ones with most of the old 2D elements. Thanks for this unexpected feature.

I took a quick break to look at it. For those who can't, here's a couple images. You enter in your preferences, and it searches the entire world map for the best match, as best I can tell. You can disable some or all of the behavior both in the init.txt and in the map generation variables.

Setup:

Result:

This approach preserves more mystery than Prospector about where things are, and it searches the world for your best site. Awesome.

(edit: the two screenshots are from different sets of search parameters)

Matt Boyd of Mac Hall/Three Panel fame posted the first of a three-part interview with Toady yesterday.

Here's an example for how graphical tiles could work, from a project of mine.

This would be wonderful, and an evolution of what's already in place.

DF Bug Reports / [39a|b] brook source performance issue
« on: July 15, 2008, 12:36:14 pm »
This is very probably not specific to the current versions, but related to this older report:

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=9375.0

Any fort I start containing the source of a brook (the very beginning "fingers" of brook tile which join to form the brook) results in jerky performance. The game freezes about a second every two seconds, and my FPS is about quarter of that I get on any other map (~20 fps vs 80 fps). Volcanos, rivers, brooks without the source square, oceans, and every other setup with fluids do not cause this problem for me in 39a|b. Turning off temperature, fluid numbers, weather, etc., does not impact the issue.

Linked is a 6x6 save exhibiting this behavior. Nice fort area otherwise, sadly.

The giant crocodilians that snacked on dinos, like Sarcosuchus, and their earlier amphibian analogs would be cool. Some pliosaurs might have gotten a bit bigger, but they also didn't run out of the water and chase you  :)

Yes, the map's definitely 15ish FPS slower than other maps I've tried, although I'd blame the magma before the baddies.  A smaller map than 6x6 would probably be smart, though that might crop one or more sites of interest. I'm going to try dumping some magma down the chasm (or use the stockpile-on-magma bug) to remove a few layers of magma in my game and see how that helps, as others have reported a doubling of FPS with magma removed completely.

The kobald area is a complex of snaking 1 tile wide tunnels that sometimes interconnect and sometimes dead-end across ~15 z-levels. I haven't played Adventure mode enough to say how unique they are versus the old goblin forts, etc.

Absolutely. Kjoery's suggestion of using Reclaim is the best way, but:

My initial directions above were horridly incorrect. The volcano is almost in the dead center of the map. It's just a bit left of dead center, among a small patch of white hills (they're haunted but not purple, go figure), next to a river and above a small sandy area.

you should see the volcano in this view (map archive)

Been lazy about posting this, but, from direct questions about the save:

[SEED:11022007]
location - the volcano just to the left of dead center

wood: yes
iron: yes, though not a ton
flux: yes
flowing water: yes, though challenging to get to
sand: yes
magma: yes
nasties: yes, but largely blocked; you can take them on at your own pace
presence of HIDDEN FUN STUFF: yes

Edit: This followup suggested that the starting location has no access to any map edge, hindering caravans and migrations. This followup was wrong. Ignore me!
