DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Challenging engineering tasks?

How about a coastal fortress built out over the sea?

If every part of it is built over the sea and then connected to the land with a single entryway. Extra points if its also a bridge between to peices of land  :D

quote:
Acute exposure to mercury vapor has been shown to result in profound central nervous system effects, including psychotic reactions characterized by delirium, hallucinations, and suicidal tendency. Occupational exposure has resulted in broad-ranging functional disturbance, including erethism, irritability, excitability, excessive shyness, and insomnia. With continuing exposure, a fine tremor develops and may escalate to violent muscular spasms. Tremor initially involves the hands and later spreads to the eyelids, lips, and tongue. Long-term, low-level exposure has been associated with more subtle symptoms of erethism, including fatigue, irritability, loss of memory, vivid dreams, and depression.

Am I the only thinking that this perfectly describes the average DF Dwarf?

I vote LSTAR's song as the official Dwarf Fortress song   :)

Oh, and Gaulgath... I just noticed something. Your claiming to have engraved a Masterpeice Baywatcher... I've never seen that engraving in DF  :p

It depends on the strenth of the bow, the type of arrows and where about the armoured person gets hit...(in real life)

Most things like beds can only be built underground, so you'll have to mine out an area of the rock.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tombs, anyone?
« on: May 31, 2007, 09:23:00 pm »
I have a corridor lined with rock coffins for the normal dwarves who die. This corridor leads to the important tombs, who are reserved for Nobles and anyone who I think is important (Legendary Dwarves etc). The big tombs have 2 rooms and gold doors, statues and a gold sarcophagus. I also have them smoothed and then I engrave the walls at the time that the dwarf is put into the tomb.

I suppose that'd make it interesting to explore that area of the fort in adventure mode. I mean, with all the engravings doing at the time of death then they'd be related to things that were happening at that time. Also, if the dwarf got killed in combat then there's always a chance that you'd get an engraving of them being struck down.

Have you set the order to make it?

You press 'q' and then over the wood furnace place (can't remember exact name) you press 'a' to add a new order and then 'c' sets a charcoal order.

You then set a new order for each bar of charcoal you want.

Hope that helped. I remember what its like when you first start playing the game.  ;)
Good luck

EDIT: spelling again... why does my keyboard hate me?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Two fortress dwarves having a meeting
« on: March 06, 2008, 02:13:00 am »
The meetings have been in at least since the 3D version came out. Possibly even in the 2D version (fairly sure the mayor noble in that did something similar but I might be wrong).

The Mayor can use his social skills (think pacifier and consoler are the oens that get used) to try to calm down dwarves.

Sometimes the mayor messes it up I think though, and the dwarves go beserk... hilarity generally ensues. (Angry wooductter cuts off your mayors head to calm down? Yay for Dwarf Fortress  :D )

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The bearded and the unlucky

I once had 2 dwarfs who were injured from fighting Unicorns.

One was a trapper. They were in the barracks for something approaching half a year across from eachother in the beds. I can only imagine that spending that long stuck with the same person must have had them arguing constantly. Anyway, the result was that the trapper went mad, reached for his crossbow, nailed the other dwarf to his bed with it and then attempte to escape out into the fortress. Unfortunately for him I drafted my Miner and sent him after the hunter. The Hunter (who's leg was injured) crawled to the doorway and had just got there when the miner came in and hit the hunter so hard he died instantly and flew right across the room.

So I'd call both the Hunter and the other injured dwarf unfortunate. The other dwarf got shot by the hunter and the hunter came up against my miner...

Cool fight.. .although I have to admit I was a little disapointed. I misread the title when I went into the thread at first... thought it was

"Battle of the Century! Kitten versus Giant!"

I agree that it would help a lot if you could get shields that gave you a good defence against ranged weapons...

Why don't we have a thread (pinned if possible) where people can ask these quick questions all in one thread. Just make it so that you post your question there and then people answer to it in that thread... that'd cut own on these question thread and people would still be able to ask questions without fear of getting savaged by wild Hactars (j/k).

Yes, because the last thing you'd ever want to do would help somebody. That will cause the game to die and everyone who has ever played it will die of a terrible new desease.

Now, please, all of you who are complaining about somebody asking for help, just think for a moment. What would you trust more if you were new to a game? A wiki that is hard to find your way around and lacks much of the basics that you need to get started or a forum in which you can ask people questions and then if you don't understand the reply you can explain this and get a simpler and easier to understand answer.

This game is not easy to understand. You may have forgotten this, being that you are of course the almighty great knowledgeable ones. But the fact remains, it is a difficult game to understand when you are just starting and in some ways this lack of understanding is a major part of the game. Without this then the game would not have the sence of discovery that it has when you finally get something working and then move on to the next stage in your fortresses. So before you start complaining about people asking questions why don't you just thinka bout what you are doing. Because when you get down to it you are in fact complaining at that person for playing that game. Are you really sure you want to do that?
