DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Giving DF a shortcut on my mac
« on: March 19, 2011, 07:25:14 pm »
I made a Shortcut of the exe file that opens Terminal (and thus opens DF on my computer). It's on my desktop, but you could easily put it on the dock as well. Would that work?

I've created indoor plumbing! Ok, not really. I have however tapped the river at the top of the waterfall, channeled it through my fort, diverted it outside to my protected outdoor alcove where it makes a nice artificial lake and well, then sent it down several z-levels and back around into the river at the bottom of the waterfall. I can potentially have little ponds on many levels of my fort with ease. Next I'm working on EPIC MOAT. Normally, I carefully designate every channel block so dorfs don't imprison themselves. I thought this time I'd let them go for it... and they failed. One dorf REFUSES to leave the corpse of another miner (I guess. Can't explain his behavior otherwise!). He's dug himself SEVERAL up ramps. He'll happily do my bidding otherwise but absolutely refuses to leave the bottom of the moat.

During the moat building I had two ambushes, and quickly learned that my dorfs like getting stuck in infinite loops of "want to do X! Oh, can't do X because Outside is forbidden. I'll go back inside. Hey, I want to do X! Oh, can't do X because..." So then I have to cancel the skill associated with the job. Like, my miners kept wanting to build the MOAT. I had to remove them from mining so they'd go inside. I finally did get the drawbridge up... right as two dwarves walked over it. I don't know where they went... I didn't get reports of their deaths, so maybe the fall down the 8 z-level waterfall into the brook below didn't kill them. It is a mystery!

Aah, my Terrifying!fort is going very well. A werewolf attacked again. I closed all my doors and raised the bridge only to realise... he was INSIDE MY FORT. Oh well, he died pretty quickly. The waterfall is still lovely, and I have a protected outdoor valley I walled off with a large artificial pond/well/drinking source that I can refill using the river. And I have an actual cloth trade! Giant spider silk, yeah.

We're the first people recorded on the map site (http://die2nite.gamerz.org.uk/) to ever have made it this far (day 26). =D

That's odd, since I was sure Disturbed Plaine made it to day 26 first.

I'm part of The Disturbed Plaines, the #1 town currently according to the unofficial rankings board. We'll see how we do once we all finally die. But we're on day 20 with no serious concerns :D

ha ha! So remember how I was bored?

I embarked somewhere Terrifying! Even better, I have a natural waterfall I was able to incorporate into my fortress! So I'm building along, smartly getting fortifications up as one of the first things because holycrap terrifying! But I didn't get them done in time, and suddenly WEREWOLF AAAAGGG!! But I guess it got bored or something after killing my two dogs and a jeweler, because it left.

Turns out that I am not as excell
My fortress is currently boring. Sitting at a stable population of about 170. Looking at the list of the dead.... a lot of it is babies and children <_<  Sieges happen, my hallway of death kills everything, and I go about life as usual. Half of the time caravans slaughter the sieges and then I take their goods muahahah. I have large outside fortifications encasing my above ground farms, a few ponds, and part of the brook. The outer fortifications are double-thick, and everything closes with floodgates, not doors. Mostly because I was getting that weird pathing error with doors so I just did away with them completely. I'm thinking of starting a new fort, somewhere... challenging.

Sounds like you need to do some science with ghosts, my pal.
That's what I'm thinking! Time for somewhere sinister muahaha.

Totally I do! My friends don't have very dwarfy names but I do it anyway. I usually name my miners because I love my miners.

*hugs her miners!*

Started a nice new beach fortress in a plesant and varied tropical area.
Whales are kamikazing in record numbers ensuing we have always have plenty of bone, meat and tallow.
Wow, that's awesome. Kinda like those killer whales that shoot up on shore to kill seals. Except without seals.

Finally got to use my tunnel of death for an incoming ambush. It worked perfectly, if a bit slower than I anticipated. I got to watch as the invading goblins were washed down the winding tunnels until they got to the end stretch... which is filled with stonefall traps. Sufficed to say, the walls at that end are coated in blood. One unlucky goblin survived, only to spend several minutes waiting for the tunnel to completely fill with water and drown him. It was quite horrific!

Now I'm building a reservoir so I can drain the tunnel. Minor oversight on my part, but I'd like to reuse this thing.

I'm playing the mac version, and for some reason, rivers now act like roads. That's right. Dwarves and caravans can just ride on top of my river. Everyone is Jesus!

Are you sure it's not a brook?  They count as floors normally, and are walkable.
Oh, that may be it haha! Either way it's insanely convenient.

A friend introduced me and got me set up in my first dungeon, told me about farming, etc. Then I read Boatmurdered and the wiki tutorials, and from there I've pretty much done my own thing.

I'm currently excavating the lowest z-level I can get to. Found lots of gold. I'm playing the mac version, and for some reason, rivers now act like roads. That's right. Dwarves and caravans can just ride on top of my river. Everyone is Jesus! I have decided this is an acceptable flaw for the time being. I've also designated a special stock pile next to my farms just for seeds. I feel so organized. Maybe I'll make a drink stockpile next.

Oh, and my hallway of DEATH is complete. It's an underground tunnel that can, during siege, be transformed into the only entrance to my fort. Then, once the army is well within its winding corridors, I close the doors in and out, and... OPEN the floodgate to the river! Thus drowning anything foolish enough to attack me. I  haven't had a chance to try it out yet... (sieges still work on the mac version). Well, I HAD a siege... but I'd forgotten to build a floodgate to close off the front of my fort. So my military had to dispatch them.
