Hmm.. Elves cannot be vegan.. Since they DO eat meat.
Oh, right!  I always forget about their penchant for cannibalism.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread

What stockpile does ice go into? I figured since my lakes won't thaw I might as well build my fortress out of ice, but now I need to figure out how to get my masons to build crap out of just the ice.

Would ice melt if I brought it inside my fortress? What about ice blocks, do those melt?

Or assign a fisherdwarf, you just need a dwarf and a rock.

For a variety of reasons, my dwarves are descending into madness, and my FPS rate is 1/10th of what it normally is. It's making my sweet fortress really hard to play.

Also, two questions:
What is a good use for Giant Desert Scorpion venom?
What is the function of a window? I have an artifact window made of dematoid and I want to know what to do with it.

Windows look pretty. Artifact windows look prettiest.

The kind that makes it's way into goblin's heads, automatically. That's my favorite.

All I said was that taking candy would lack the ability to take it back.

So you can't do what people currently do which is "Steal and Seal"
Not sure what you mean by that. Mining Adamantine and walling it back up?

Yeah

You can do that? I'd think there would still be a huge FPS decrease from the constant pathing of the legions of &'s.

Dwarf Fortress: That's a table, and that's a chair.

DF General Discussion / Re: Doors and walls: worth it?
« on: July 11, 2011, 09:50:52 pm »
Just dig a hole in a wall, put a bed in it, and assign it to a dwarf. They don't deserve walls, doors, or floors. Don't even make a room out of them, just let them pick a bed that's available and hopefully it isn't ridden with vermin.

I'd make them sleep outside, but they don't deserve a constructed ceiling and I haven't found a way for them to be rained on while sleeping. Yet.

My precisely honed willpower is immune to bribes, and if you try to get to Rainseeker he knows I'll give him such a slap.

Is it immune to cookies? Chocolate chip cookies?

What about kittens?

What is going on here? O.o It's like everyone took this posts point and derailed it into a house full of mathematical theorists. And I'm not talking about the good ones.

I always thought the speed of DF was measured in DWS, or Dwarf Walks per Second. I usually maintain a good 10 DWS, maybe at 2o years it'll drop down to 8 DWS. On my poor laptop it starts off at 8 DWS if there is a river, and slowly drops down to 3 DWS until the goblin corpses start piling up. After that it's 1/10 DWS if I stay with it, usually I kill everything when it reaches 1 DWS.

I thought I'd just jump in there and be confusing like everyone else, or should I?

Blocks. Expect to build your first mason's shop out of wood so that you can start making them. This is always an option, because you can dismantle the wagon.

(If I had my way workshops would be made out of tables, but again, we can discuss that some other time.)

So workshops can be made out of raw wood but not raw rock? Besides, that's overdoing it considering that you're suggesting the only way for me to start my economy is to dismantle my wagon and spill my 30 bags of sand, 80 piles of coal, and countless barrels of random foodstuff and seeds for any thief/raccoon/vermin to destroy.

Especially considering you don't need blocks to create walls, that's unrealistic.

6) Not going to make a lot of friends here, but there's too much Adamantine. Make it MORE difficult to mine than normal, not super easy.

Am I the only one who hasn't gained the wonderful benefit of adamantine? I've tried to mine it 3 times now, and have only made a single sword. How much is too much? Every time I try to mine it I get lots of Fun.

I agree with changing the name of steel though, it should be known as 'Dwarven Awesomeness'. Smelt 30 bars of dwarven awesomeness anyone?

Eh? It takes me half a year for one miner to dig out everything in my fort. Then again, I don't make very large forts.

Wait, what are workshops made out of? O.o

You can dig a staircase in a year, unless you have very lazy miners or more than 150 Z levels. I think (hope) this is what they meant.

Ninja'd X.X

That would be entirely subjective; dependent on how many Z levels you have till hell, how large your map is, and whether or not you have invasions on. I can assure you, however, that on a 3x3 embark with 100 Z levels, 4 miners, and no invasion you cannot dig out everything between the surface and hell in 2 years.

Now quit with your useless sarcasm, we have tests and !!science!! to back our words.

For fun, it only took me two years to install the pumps to pump magma up 100 Z levels. That's not counting the time to dig out the pump space and build the pump parts though, but it was all done within 6 years.
