DF Gameplay Questions / Re: CAn dwarves admire walls?
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:32:08 pm »
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/23a:Thought

I believe no, at least I have never seen a dwarf admire a wall regardless of how much marble it is. They do admire engravings, though.

Nice bit about the burrows, but a few questions:
You said that dwarves are free to wander elsewhere, but the wiki says that dwarves will stay inside the burrow unless starving or dehydrated. I've seen your case in individual burrows, and the wikis case in alert assigned burrows.
Do you have to assign dwarves' rooms to the burrow, or will they sleep in their own room without?
Will archers or other military grab equipment outside of a burrow?
My greatest problem is getting my jeweler/bonecrafter/blacksmith to decorate the expensive items I want them to, can placed items be decorated? If so, if I made a burrow covering the workshop, gems, and placed furniture would they be encrusted? If not, if I made a burrow covering the workshop, gems, and furniture stockpile would they go for the items in the furniture stockpile first or the sea of bags that are closer?

I understand the wiki says a lot, but it doesn't tell you everything. I would like to see the wiki updated though :/

*fatherjimbo channels out a dangerous tile and is killed by falling wall of text*

Actually, i.e. means id est. It's latin for "that is". So you used it incorrectly.

You should have used e.g. It stands for exempli gratia which means "for the sake of an example" in latin.

I'm sorry you jumbled them up so but it's a common mistake.

Hrm? No, I'm pretty sure I said it means in example, since mine clearly lacks a period and is in capitals I don't see how you could be confuse it for Latin abbreviations. />`/`//~/3|>

So...people that don't prefer the ASCII mode are assholes? DF requires patience regardless of whether you use a graphics pack or not.

It's a great game no matter if you use a graphics pack or not and just because some people do does not mean they are the 'wrong' crowd.

Please don't quote me on things that have already been addressed properly in their context: And in general, don't misquote people at all. It's really rude. Now look what you did, I have to reiterate what I said because someone can't be bothered to read 5 pages of text.

"His 'audience' are people who are -patient- enough to appreciate ASCII"
The game was made in ASCII for those who are used to such or appreciate such charm. It also keeps the game easy to port to other systems. In my belief, ASCII allows the person playing the game to use their imagination which is something not many games cater to these days, and if you insisted on having graphics you have everything you need to create your own graphic pack. If you aren't a sprite designer or have no experience with paint, then you are in no position to tell Toady that he needs to generalize his graphics for the mainstream audience. If you want to know why this won't change, go look around the Iron Realms forums and you'll see what it all comes down to: People want to use their imagination. This issue has been taken into an empty plain and beaten with a spiky stick by millions of people until all that remained was a hollow shell bleeding over the masses.

"H(w)e don't want to attract the 'wrong' crowd. IE, assholes"
First, IE means in example; in example we don't want to attract assholes as they are the wrong crowd. We also don't want to attract the crowd that only cares about how pretty a game looks, or the crowd that only cares about how much a game makes (if it makes a lot of money, it must be gooooood), or the crowd that tries to tell a designer what he should be doing when he already knows what he's doing, or the crowd that misquote people, or the crowd that can't be bothered to look for things themselves, or the crowd not patient enough to spend the five minutes necessary to realize that the game already comes pre-installed with a multitude of community graphic packs, or the crowd that brings up old issues that have already been addressed so many times before, or the crowd...hell the list goes on. I guess the crowd that appreciates games for what they are, gives designers the freedom to do what they want with their creation, and wants games where they can use their imagination on is what we do want.

As you can see, neither of the sentences were meant to be used in conjunction and I'm sorry you jumbled them up so.

If I may quote the fabled John Evans: "I don't want to charge money for my game or be payed for advertisements that take attention away from gameplay...I like having the freedom to take suggestions from my player base but not having any consequences if I decide I don't want them or do something not everyone likes....if my game costs money that would bring up a whole new issue of how much? How? Why?....donations work just fine and I appreciate them greatly, but the whole point is that it's a hobby of mine and will stay as such...if it was a job and I was dependent on it's income, it wouldn't have become what it is today....it's my game, and those that choose to play it enjoy it for what it is...I would never sacrifice something I created for greed...."

I haven't a clue what the topic is on this thread anymore :/

Toady knows the problem and solution before you even post your thread because he is awesome. Explaining is futile.
Toady doesn't want to include graphic mods in DF. Therefor, graphic mods won't be included in DF.
We are not Toady. Only Toady is Toady.

From the above evidence, I conclude that this thread is officially pointless.

Find? Find how? Did you conduct a study or is that based purely on assumptions or personal experience?

I heard about this game from a reputable source, and as such had no reason to doubt DF at all. My sources give me games/etc based on substance, not pretty looks. Most of everything I've come across I've heard from someone else, so you have to give your props to viral advertisement.

Outside of that, all the points I was going to make have already been made :( Curse you outstanding community!

In the end, it all come down to what Toady wants.
This game is freeware, and the best kind. It's the awesome kind that most people wouldn't play if it weren't free, but now that they are playing it will pay (donate) because they think it's just that awesome. I myself will donate on the sole premise that I feel like I'm stealing someone's mind if I don't.

A lot of us have fought long and hard for freeware and the return of small companies, and we don't feel it would be productive to go back to greedy big companies. Do you know how toady could really get rich? Bring Dwarf Fortress to a big company and sell it to them so they can gut it out and make it nice and pretty for the mainstream audience; and then you could play the poor bastard child of a game that comes out of it. The majority audience you speak of wouldn't play DF just because it was shown with pretty graphics, they just lack the mental faculties (patience) to play it. How do we know? Just look at the main point of:

Dwarf fortress is already released with graphic packs through multiple mediums on the forum. If said majority audience can't click on forums, type graphic in the search bar, and click 'search'..then putting it on the main page probably won't help them much.

If you're referring to sugar from sodas, it's the acid that will kill your teeth first.

As far as the Americans using one type of flour to cook everything bread and bread related, I use all purpose flour for everything. Not so much because I can't tell the difference between flours, but because everyone around me can't tell the difference and I'm too lazy to carry a large pantry.

Other than stereotyping myself, it's not hard to find good flour to make good bread as it is to find a good baker to make it. Typical supermarkets either under cook or burn their bread/cakes/cookies/pies/etc, and these are people who have been baking for years. I should know, I had to marry a baker and buy her a french pastry book to get good desserts without making them myself. It's not the same when you make it for yourself :(

I have a .13 (or was it .14? Whichever one never got sieges) set up as a test fortress. Best way to learn things is to do them in an environment designed for no other reason than to learn. Basically, channel a hole in the ground, dig the ground next to it connected to somewhere for your dwarves to get out, remove the ramp, build a gear assembly, build a windmill over it, then build a series of tunnels/axles to connect them to a pump. After that, pumpstack. You will probably want to build a bunch of windmills, just connect them all to the main gear assembly.

If I surround my dwarves with kittens and rainbows, can they be put on duty forever? Or is it impossible for a dwarf to be on duty forever without going crazy?

DF General Discussion / Lucky number 13
« on: December 22, 2010, 07:50:21 pm »
I'm on my 13th fortress, so in honor I'd like to recap some of my best fortresses and how they ended.

So my first fortress was pretty awesome. A small stockpile of food outside, a small single space tunnel with 7 bedrooms dug out of it. Before the carpenter could figure out how to cut down a tree and turn it into a bed, the food ran out and everyone stood around starving. I decided to watch 5ippycups tutorials and how to play after this.

My second fortress was a carbon copy of 5ippycup's tutorial fortress. It died of me being bored.

Fortress's 3-7 were experimental fortresses where I tested various fortress layouts to find the one that was most efficient. Fortress 7 ended when I felt I had finally found the perfect layout utilizing a perfect balance of space between living areas, dining rooms, workshops, and stockpiles. I decided to start over from scratch to see how effective my layout was. I also experimented with pointlessly moving water around, and found out how effective large serrated discs were.

Fortress 8 I scrapped the design from fortresses 3-7, withdrew from society, and after a day came up with: A fortress layout. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with sandviches and encircled with bands of coffee. This object menaces with spikes of awesomeness. I then realized that there was a distinct lack of coal on my map, yet plenty of gold and silver. After my military clad in leather brandishing silver warhammers failed to stop two back to back ambushes followed by a siege, all of whom decided to come right after each caravan and proceed to rape their camels with silver spears, the goblins had their way with the dwarven women and I abandoned the fortress.

For fortress 9 I decided to tackle aquifers. Unfortunately, embarking in a desert with a few levels of aquifers directly below the sandy ground isn't the best way to learn something new. I did learn how to break through aquifers with the pump method. I also learned just how long they meant by 'long method' and that dwarves don't last long when they have nowhere to hide from giant desert scorpions. Giant desert scorpions win when your hunter runs out of ammo.

Fortress 10 I decided to break away from the 'fortress in a side of a mountain' routine and embarked in the only heavily forested area I could found that didn't have an aquifer and wasn't next to a mountain. I was hopeful as I designated the entire fortress to be dug out, placed temporary stockpiles for food and wood, and assigned all the bushes and trees to be butchered for their goods. My hope was quickly dashed when they were immediately set upon by a squad of ornery buzzards, two of which lured the wardogs away while the rest kindly stole all of the food. To add insult to injury, they decided to push the brewer into the lake and fly around scaring away the miners until he drowned, after which they flew off with our their food. In the wardogs defense they did kill the two buzzards they were chasing, and were rewarded by being butchered alongside the buzzards for emergency rations. After digging out my fortress I realized that there was no iron ore or coal and most of my dwarves were depressed, and decided that dwarves aren't elves and shouldn't be treated as such.

Fortress 11 I (finally) experimented with siege engines. After about three years in my fortress was surrounded by two walls and a moat, the entrances through which were thoroughly guarded by three ballista per entrance. If that wasn't enough, my main entrance was a 3x20 line of traps also guarded by 3 ballista (oh, I had 9 legendary siege operators) with 3 magma proof hatchcovers over the stairs and 3 magma proof floodgates at the entrance. And magma. Five years into the game, the much awaited killingsiege came. They left rather quickly after one of them stepped on my first layer of weapon traps and got a boo-boo on his leg. This depressed me and I abandoned the fortress with the goblins.

Fortress 12 I experimented with new residential layouts and by an genius effort (mistake) managed to make an effective layout that held 4 more dwarves while still having the farthest room exactly 25 spaces from the entrance of the fort. Unfortunately I didn't like the way it looked and stuck with my original design, and while I was at it revamped all the rooms to look more 'artistic' instead of squares built inside squares dug out of a giant square. Now they're squares built inside diamonds dug out of a giant rectangle. Add some octagons and symmetry, and my fortress is now aesthetically pleasing with minimal efficiency interference. Fortress 12 died due it taking a ridiculously long time to save/load on .18.

Here I am, on lucky fortress number 13. Aesthetically pleasing symmetry with wonderful efficiency. Plenty of marble to make everything I possibly can out of marble, and the northern portion of the map has a sedimentary layer with everything I could possibly want. I was just thinking that this might be the one fortress that lasts a ridiculously long time and dies due to me being bored of everyone having solid marble rooms decorated with diamond encrusted gold furniture and even Urist Mcpansymiller being an unstoppable killing machine; when I realized that all of my dwarfs appears to suffer from a logic malformation (retardation) and that there are too many series of unfortunate idiocy. I decided to destroy all of my orthoclase buildings and replace them with shazzy new marble block ones, but I couldn't build the fishery because there was a cedar bucket in it and I couldn't build the dyery because the marble block that was going to be used for the fishery was dropped in it's building area. I couldn't build a carpenters workshop because the barrel assigned to the dyers was in it's area, and for some series of blocks being dropped about only one of the six masons workshops didn't get suspended. If that event wasn't enough, Urist Mcnowfirstintobattle organized a party right after the dwarven caravan came. It's not like we needed that iron anvil and food or anything. On subject of anvils, fuel is present but isn't unlimited so I had 20 steel bars made to outfit a small squad before I wasted all of my fuel/iron on large serrated iron blades. Sensing the newfound value of steel, Urist Mcnumbskull decided to become possessed and make 'Zararbost: a steel animal trap. It is encircled with bands of orthoclase. This object menaces with spikes of steel.' Gee thanks, all of the iron and gems we have and you want to make a steel animal trap. I don't want to abandon and start another fortress because I like how my fortress is made (it's the first with a working mill) and it's my 13th fortress, besides the events would have been humorous if I didn't have to fix them.

DF General Discussion / Re: How many people you know play Dwarf Fortress?
« on: December 22, 2010, 04:49:15 pm »
I tried to get my wife to play it, but she says farm-ville is better. All my other friends are either too retarded to take the time to learn to play a good game, or are too turned off by it's ASCII art to pull their head out of their *** and learn to search the forum for *lazy newb* or *graphics*. Meanwhile, they get bored of me talking about DF and I get bored of naming groups of dwarfs after them; equipping said dwarfs with wooden swords, sending them out to fight sieges they have no chance of ever defeating, and drowning the world in magma and self loathing.

I need new friends.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No cave fish available (explained)
« on: December 21, 2010, 02:41:19 pm »
Ditto with above, I think it's to do with different civs but it doesn't always happen when I switch civs so I'm not 100% sure. It'll tell me there's no cave fish and remove it from my list, but I add both cave fish back to my list. I think once there actually was no cave fish (but turtles :)) but that was only once.

Not sure what the problem is, but as per above just roll with.

The problem is that you are embarking under a -different dwarven civ- that has different cave fish.

Fixed.

I went four years before getting my first thief/snatcher.

Another play I got back to back ambushes on the second year and a siege the third.
