So...people that don't prefer the ASCII mode are assholes? DF requires patience regardless of whether you use a graphics pack or not.
It's a great game no matter if you use a graphics pack or not and just because some people do does not mean they are the 'wrong' crowd.
Please don't quote me on things that have already been addressed properly in their context: And in general, don't misquote people at all. It's really rude. Now look what you did, I have to reiterate what I said because someone can't be bothered to read 5 pages of text.
"His 'audience' are people who are -patient- enough to appreciate ASCII"
The game was made in ASCII for those who are used to such or appreciate such charm. It also keeps the game easy to port to other systems. In my belief, ASCII allows the person playing the game to use their
imagination which is something not many games cater to these days, and if you insisted on having graphics you have everything you need to create your own graphic pack. If you aren't a sprite designer or have no experience with paint, then you are in no position to tell Toady that he needs to generalize his graphics for the mainstream audience. If you want to know why this won't change, go look around the Iron Realms forums and you'll see what it all comes down to:
People want to use their imagination. This issue has been taken into an empty plain and beaten with a spiky stick by millions of people until all that remained was a hollow shell bleeding over the masses.
"H(w)e don't want to attract the 'wrong' crowd. IE, assholes"
First, IE means in example; in example we don't want to attract assholes as they are the wrong crowd. We also don't want to attract the crowd that only cares about how pretty a game looks, or the crowd that only cares about how much a game makes (if it makes a lot of money, it must be gooooood), or the crowd that tries to tell a designer what he should be doing when he already knows what he's doing, or the crowd that misquote people, or the crowd that can't be bothered to look for things themselves, or the crowd not patient enough to spend the five minutes necessary to realize that the game already comes pre-installed with a multitude of community graphic packs, or the crowd that brings up old issues that have already been addressed so many times before, or the crowd...hell the list goes on. I guess the crowd that appreciates games for what they are, gives designers the freedom to do what they want with their creation, and wants games where they can use their imagination on is what we
do want.
As you can see, neither of the sentences were meant to be used in conjunction and I'm sorry you jumbled them up so.
If I may quote the fabled John Evans:
"I don't want to charge money for my game or be payed for advertisements that take attention away from gameplay...I like having the freedom to take suggestions from my player base but not having any consequences if I decide I don't want them or do something not everyone likes....if my game costs money that would bring up a whole new issue of how much? How? Why?....donations work just fine and I appreciate them greatly, but the whole point is that it's a hobby of mine and will stay as such...if it was a job and I was dependent on it's income, it wouldn't have become what it is today....it's my game, and those that choose to play it enjoy it for what it is...I would never sacrifice something I created for greed...."
