DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Favorite Roof Type
« on: November 04, 2016, 11:15:45 pm »
And as follow up questions: do you use eaves, and do you use dormers?
If you're unfamiliar with any of these real world roofing options, wikipedia has a nice list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_roof_shapes
Note that I've only listed common roofing options that are easily done in DF and have skipped things like domes or barrel vaults which take a bit more work. If you use these sorts of roofs, or other odd roof types, let us know in the comments!

Masterwork DF / Just saw my first big dance
« on: October 30, 2016, 04:18:07 pm »
I've been playing with the new version of Masterwork for a few weeks now and just saw my first big organized dance in my newly opened above ground pub. It was a perfect fantasy world scene: two dwarves standing by the wall playing instruments while a naga man bard recited poetry ("Weeeeeelll swing your partner round and round, dip your partner to the ground, swing your partner round again and wriggle like a naga man!")

Eighteen dancers were on the floor in a staggered three by six pattern doing a sort of twisting roundelay with groups of four rotating around a common center but switching off partners. Most were dwarven or naga bards and poets, but one of the fortress mechanics was whooping it up near the center, as well as a white tigerman, a human, and a dwarven mercenary, and a human duke consort. A Pandashi baroness consort watched from the door, a naga man bard and naga woman poet watched from behind the bar, while a human spearman mercenary slept drunkenly in a pile of mugs.

This just made my day and fulfilled all my expectations of opening a fantasy pub/inn. The screenshot I caught was showing the dance/play music icons instead of the individual character tiles the moment I snapped it, which I guess are leaves and armor racks?

DF Gameplay Questions / Does rain cause tree regrowth?
« on: October 17, 2016, 10:26:28 pm »
I mean, does an actual rain drop falling on a seedling cause it to grow into a tree? Trees keep rain off seedlings, so the never grow, but when you cut down the trees, if you are in a biome with a fair amount of rain, the trees grow back even thicker. If there is no rain, no trees regrow. If you turn up the rain with dfhack, more trees regrow anyplace there are actual seedlings. You can coat a desert in saguaro this way.

Has anyone done more science on this? If you put a ceiling up ten stories above a seedling, it would keep the rain off but still give room for growth. Does manual watering make trees regrow from seedlings? If you put some stairs next to one and designate a pond over it, would this accelerate regrowth?

DF Suggestions / A few nits to pick
« on: October 15, 2016, 01:39:05 pm »
Peripheral nerves grow back: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroregeneration
Iron is FAR more common than copper in the crust: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abundance_of_elements_in_Earth%27s_crust
Steel making just doesn't work like that. Why do we ADD carbon to the pig iron and regular iron? Steel has LESS carbon than pig iron. Decarburization can be achieved solely through heating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrous_metallurgy

These things have been bugging me about DF for years now.

Masterwork DF / Where is all this deep galena coming from?!?
« on: October 14, 2016, 09:48:13 pm »
I have no farm plots dedicated to deep galena, yet I have a TON of the stuff, both plants and leaf form. I've never wild-crafted a single plant on this embark, I didn't embark with any, I haven't traded for any, yet I have several hundred of the things. Where'd it all come from?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Water pressure broken
« on: October 13, 2016, 11:03:31 pm »
Sometimes, water in my forts will completely lose pressure. I've seen it happen in u-bends before, but now I'm seeing it in a system with no u-bends. I've got water going down a flight of stairs, through two engraved fortifications and a wall grate, over a raising bridge as the upper shut-off, then down twelve z-levels. The water travels horizontally north 13 tiles, west 18 tiles, and then north 6 tiles. It goes diagonally through a floodgate, to reduce pressure, and into the top of my 2 z-level tall cistern.

At the beginning, it all works like it is supposed to. After a few seconds, the water seems to forget that it is under pressure. A 6 water tile has to make it all the way back to the stairwell before more water falls. It should be 7s all the way to the depressurizer. Water should teleport to the next available 6 tile before the depressurizer. It doesn't. However, using the dfhack liquids command to destroy the tile of water under the stairwell instantly restores things to working order, and the system remembers it is under pressure. For another few seconds. Then it forgets again.

I've looked on the bug tracker, and the only reports I can find are from people who don't understand how pressure works in the game, and think water should come back up to the same level like it would in the real world. I'm not expecting that, I know how the pressure system is supposed to work in the game, and it does, but it fails intermittently.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No alcohol poisoning, no fighting
« on: October 11, 2016, 08:05:17 pm »
I read here that tavern keepers and tavern entertainers cause dwarves and guests to drink to much, get in bar fights, and eventually get alcohol poisoning, which sounds hilarious. Yet after I set up a big tavern with lots of booze of all sorts, a tavern keeper, and an entertainer, I get nothing.

No fights.
No alcohol poisoning.

Nothing funny at all, just lots of socializing, storytelling and performing. Which is how Toady described taverns, and how the wiki says they work...

So are the forumites here who made those claims just another case of the infinite dwarf fortress rumor machine spitting out more contrafactual claims? Maybe the "drunken bar fights" are just regular tantrums, and the "alcohol poisoning" is just regular old cave adaptation?

Masterwork DF / Distracted Golems
« on: October 11, 2016, 02:27:47 pm »
All my golems and awakened rocks are distracted by unmet needs. What can I do to prevent this? Do golems need oil?  :P Also, rocks are shown as "no job" throwing off my idle counter, any way to fix this? (Maybe this is more of a 'The Earth Strikes Back' question...)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Which style of construction do you use?
« on: October 10, 2016, 06:50:12 pm »
When making large constructions, there are several ways to go about it, and each has advantages and disadvantages. Which do you prefer? The methods I have tried include:
*Floor style scaffolding. Uses constructed floors and stairs. Construction is fast, scaffolding deconstruction is slow.
*Wall style scaffolding. Uses constructed walls and ramps.Construction is fast, uses more material for taller buildings, deconstruction is a little faster.
*Grate style scaffolding. Uses floor grates and stairs. Construction is fast, deconstruction is fastest.
*Stack style. No scaffolding, uses ramps for access and the walls themselves. Construction is slow but there is very little deconstruction required.

Anyone know any other methods?

How do you go about it? is there a good way to find the right person for the job? Is it true that having a tavern keeper will cause drunken fights and alcohol poisoning? No, really, have you personally seen it happen or is this just another DF forum rumor that people keep spreading without any proof?

Masterwork DF / Quick golem question
« on: October 01, 2016, 02:09:49 pm »
How big are golems? I just had a weaponsmith create an artifact orichalcum two-handed sword, is a golem big enough to use it effectively? Is orichalcum a good edged-weapon metal?

Masterwork DF / What kind of RPG and collectible card games do dwarves play?
« on: September 29, 2016, 03:40:43 pm »
Basements and Bureaucrats?

"My 12th level Office Drone confronts the Middle Manager, 'You've been stealing my ideas and not giving me any credit! En Guarde!' He draws his +2 letter opener and makes a feint attack!"

"Roll for initiative. Okay, the Middle Manager is surprised, roll to hit, ouch! Critical failure, you fumble and drop the letter opener. The Middle Manager draws his Red Swingline Stapler of Fire! 'That's the last straw, burn it down!' he cries as he opens fire..."

Nerds: the Hackening?

"I tap my Sun Micro for 1 CPU, and cast Network Scan."

"Hah, I tap my NeXT Cube and play Obsolete as an interrupt, put your Sun on the discard pile..."

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Humans in the fortress
« on: September 25, 2016, 04:58:16 pm »
Humans can now show up and ask to stay at your fort, and military type humans can be placed in squads. What to do about clothing? My fortress isn't actually near any human civilizations, so none show up to trade. I can't produce large clothing. Are humans who join my fort simply destined to go around nude after a while?

What about squads and uniforms? I can't produce large armor, either. Are humans actually as useless and prone to problems as they appear?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Well this is odd
« on: September 22, 2016, 09:45:00 pm »
Just when you think you've seen everything in this game, a migrant walks onto the map and drops a horse nose. How does this even happen? WHY did this happen? Somehow, the game gave a dwarf a horse nose, said dwarf carried it all the way to my fort, then decided, "No, you know what, I really don't need this horse nose after all."

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What do I need to know about the new version
« on: September 18, 2016, 11:29:25 pm »
Old hand with DF, just getting back into it after a couple of years without playing. The new version seems pretty cool! I've got my dining room set up as a tavern, with mugs, a bar, a separate dining area, and some rental bedrooms. Both dwarven and human visitors have come to carouse. Made a few instruments, wow, the custom instrument system is nice. Listened in on a few performances, and the custom music and poetry system is super detailed!

My fortress is in its second year, no attacks or thieving kobolds yet. I've got some iron weapons and armor and am about ready to start a squad, for now I've got some decent traps and an ultra cheezy edge-isolated underground depot using raised bridges, I remember that the wagons won't path over traps anymore... So... what else do I need to know about the new version? What good are libraries? Is it like Masterwork and you can raise stats? I just bought some books from the humans. What do I need to do to write my own? How important are the tavern keeper and performer? What criteria should I use to pick them? Thanks in advance for any advice, DF forums are one of the best things about this game!
