I see I'm not alone in having alligator and crocodile problems on occasion. That's the usual cause of short lived forts for me. I thought I would have a short lived fort with my most recent one, but it seems flocks of giant ravens aren't all that aggressive.

Dwarves prefer to store their gear on their person, by default even when they are off duty. I assume the wiki page must refer to the case where you set your soldiers to NOT wear gear off duty. But I never do that (why would one?) so I've never seen them store anything in weapon/armor racks. Position on the menu page refers to the page with three columns, one for selecting a squad, one for the ten slots in the squad, and the last one listing all dwarves not in the selected squad so you can select them to be in that squad.

You know what isn't legit? Cage traps. And Dwarf Therapist, makes the game too easy. And tilesets, if you don't know what the letters mean, you shouldn't be playing the game. Don't get me started on 3D visualizers, if you can't think in 3D based on a series of sectional slices, that's your problem, not the game's. Oh, and no changing the mineral settings of course. Embarking on anything but terrifying glaciers is definitely not legit.

HFS has sprung a leak, magma is emptying into a glowing pit. I doubt this is playable, it looks like a world gen bug.

Try designating a zone over the well and seeing if you can make it a water source. If not, there's something wrong with your well, for instance, I don't think wells can go through floor grates.

You know how dwarves drink a lot but you don't have to provide them with any plumbing? I think we just figured out where it all goes.

Woot! I'm glad I persevered, digging down through five layers of mudstone I hit magnetite, magnetite, bituminous coal, magnetite and bituminous coal. Then there's marble, and then on z-17, there's a magma pipe at the bottom of the first cavern. Looks like my Glorious Dwarven Expedition to the Scary Hills will not want for arms and armor. Dfprospector says I have 51k of magnetite and 21k of bituminous coal, holy crap! Even my menacing iron spikes will menace with spikes of iron. I bet the marble will be the limiting factor in how much steel I can put out.

I figured, no guts, no glory, so I put four guys in a melee squad, and my hunter in an archer squad. The melee guys grabbed picks and an axe, and the hunter already had his armor and crossbow, so I sent them right at the zombies. Results, ten dead zombie badgers, seven unhurt dwarves. Sometimes the RNG is your friend. Or maybe zombie badgers just aren't as mean as live ones.

Just started a new fort, half calm forest, half sinister hills. To me zombie badgers aren't sinister, they are terrifying. There are ten of them about 40 squares away from my freshly arrived wagon. I've got one guy with an axe, xbow and leather armor, but he has with pathetic weapon skills. What should I do? Think I can dig a trench before they get to me?

I hate volcanoes because it is so hard to find coal, iron, and flux near a volcano. It takes no time at all to dig down forty or fifty levels to the magma sea. You're a dwarf, right? So why are you hanging out near the surface? Build your fort down there, with only a trading post and farm near the surface. Or, if you have coal and iron in abundance, you can construct a 40 z-level iron pumpstack before your second spring and put the magma wherever you want it.

Volcanoes suck, but I always embark near infinite water of some sort.

Give them dual-shields, it discourages wrestling, due to the lack of free hands, and encourages protection.

Do you think they would bite and kick more while dual wielding shields?
