Congrats, you just caught one of the most fearsome beasties in the caverns. Does it have a name, indicating that it killed one of your dwarves? If not, train that sucker!

Problem solved  8)

Did you actually read that? That article is a copy from the last version of the game. It certainly does not address the new problems with clothing and bad thoughts. Problem not solved, and now we have another problem, updating the wiki.

Did you actually order the squad to do anything? If they could not see it, being on different z-levels, they would have no way of knowing it was there (unless you gave them the order to defend burrows.)

I've never encountered your problem, Tirion, so I can't really offer much advice. My dwarves pick up shoes the same as any other clothes. Are you using any mods? Modding things yourself? Was this map generated on 34.07, or was it generated with a previous version? Are you sure it is shoes in the stockpile, not boots? Boots are classed as armor, for the military only.

Xen0n: Yeah, if your squads have downtime they should replace their own rotting clothing.

Tirion: do they have no shoes, or do they have rotting shoes?

You can use dfhack's "cleanowned x" command to mark all owned worn clothes for dumping. This lets you use clothes in uniforms with the "replace clothing" option without having to worry about uniforms rotting off. Dwarves in squads will not dump worn clothing while on duty, so if you have scheduled all your squaddies to train all the time, they won't dump clothes often, if at all.

I think I'll try with unconscious animals first, just for testing.

As for equipping the guy, kings cannot be military leaders. I must give him his personal commanding officer before enlisting... Maybe his wife will do, she already sleeps in his barracks. When I unlocked the door and tasked him with pulling the lever next to the bed, he ran to it. But when I cancelled the order he returned to the throne room. Which means he's either not hungry yet (over 6 months after arrival) or won't feed on his wife.

Even if you manage to find some way to reliably knock animals unconscious without killing them, that's not "asleep." The only way this works, AFAIK, is if you have embarked on an evil biome that contains sleep inducing weather of some sort. Otherwise, animals never sleep.

Professional Comedian

Wut.

Sounds like you've got the Steven Wright of dwarven comedians.

"Curiosity killed the cat, but for a while I was a suspect."

"I have a large seashell collection which I keep scattered on the beaches all over the world. Maybe you've seen it."

"I have a paper cut from writing my suicide note. It's a start..."

I've never had a problem with dwarves bumping into each other on stairs. Using seperate up/down stairs rather than one long stairwell will double the distance dwarves have to travel, negating any FPS bonus. I use a 3x3 stairwell with four stairs, one in each corner. Hatches fix any defensibility problems.

You have to dismantle it.

I have never had a problem making fresh water by pumping stagnant water into a cistern. Stagnation is like salt, it is a contaminant. Pumps don't actually move water, they destroy it at the source and create it at the output. Contaminants like salt and stagnation are not recreated. Cisterns above ground level may have problems with stagnation from the biome, but underground cisterns never, ever go stagnant unless the stagnation contaminant flows into them. Aquifer water is no different than any other water except that it occurs below ground and won't pick up contaminants from the biome unless you pump it up to ground level or mix it with contaminated water.

Getting rid of nearly a thousand pieces of used clothing, waiting for the merchants to leave the map, saving the game and reloading it increased my frame rate by 0 FPS. My theory is that having ten thousand items of clothing might knock 1-3 FPS off your rate.

If you make a uniform that replaces clothing, but does not actually include clothing, you will get armed and armored angry naked dwarfs. Armor does not count as clothing! If you use "replace clothing" you need to add, at the very least, socks, trousers and a shirt to your uniform.

The only benefit of metal bins is that you can trade them to the elves without pissing them off. That means our friend here is an elf-lover. GET HIM!
