DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to encourage marriage and births?
« on: August 21, 2021, 12:37:40 pm »
Yes, as Q says, it all comes down to how much time off your dwarves have. If you want them to form relationships then you have to let them idle in the meeting area.

It does help if the meeting area is smaller. For 7 dwarves a 4x4 room ought to be enough space to allow some tables and chairs yet still keep the dwarves close together.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: RAW EDITING

If you are editing frequency of animals and such then you probably will need to gen a new world to see the effect.

You'll need to turn up the frequency in order to get them to show up more often. Upping the population number would help as well. If you want to also breed them then I suggest increasing the litter size a tad.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to keep animals out of the library

You could also try marking the doors as tightly closed, so tame animals won’t be able to open the door.

Yes, but it is worth noting that animals can still get in through the doors when a dwarf passes through. This isn't a problem usually for low traffic areas but for a meeting area there can be a lot of dwarf traffic opening the doors.

I would dig more space out for pumps to help push more water out of the way. There is too much water past the pumps to deal with cancelation spam.

You could always mod the human and dwarf entity to only worship death. If I really want lots of necros I also give a maxage to elves and have them worship death as well. You can get 50 odd towers in a world easy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Monarch Atom Smashed

At least they have a reason now.
I don't remember if it was a bug with DF or my particular install, but I'd pretty sure I remember a game where atom-smashing someone not only erased them from existence, but memories of them. Dorfs would feel bad and not quite know why.

Ahh good ol' dark souls

If so how is it working? Does it do what it is supposed to do efficiently? And can anyone one tell me which is better to use and why?

I started using autolabor and labormanager a while ago. I used to use DT but I found myself getting into a rut using it.

Both auto and labor are nice because you basically don't have to worry about managing jobs and you can focus on other aspects of the game. Both are completely customizable as well so if you find for some reason the program is not doing what you want then all you have to do is tweek the settings a bit.

I tend to use laborm early on because it focuses on completing jobs quickly. Later I switch to autolabor so that some dwarves will specialize.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Something weird is happening with my nobles

The champion is tied to the baron. Since your baron is dead, you can't appoint a champion.

Semantics are usually pretty important in engineering

Fair point

A gradient isn't a transfer, it's a difference.

Semantics

If you are talking about a heat gradient then you are talking about energy transfer

Regardless the original person I was responding to was suggesting that the biggest variety of life would exist under volcanic glaciers. Which is entirely possible if we are talking about magical systems but is not going to be true in a system that is closer to reality.

It isn't the difference of energy in the environment that matters so much as how much usuable energy exists for organisms to use.

This is weird.

He was talking about positive and negative planes. If such planes existed and you could tap into them then presumably you could generate something like an electric current. Which could potentially be used as an enegy source.

No he wasn't (although conceivably such planes could exist, if planes existed at all). He explicitly mentioned Planes of Fire and Ice, and using a stirling engine (a heat engine) to take advantage of the two.

A heat gradient isn't the same thing. The heat could be used as an energy source directly.

Heat can't be used as an energy source by itself, only heat gradients can. The Earth has billions, probably trillions of joules of heat energy in its atmosphere, but we can't use it because there's nowhere cold to put it. Similarly, the sun would be just as useful (according to classical thermodynamics at least, not really if you consider modern notions of chemistry, relativity, and absolute zero) if it was considerably cooler than outer space rather than considerably hotter.

To the first, I reread it, we are both wrong. He talked about positive and negative planes in the exact same paragraph where he talked about the stirling engine.

The second is semantics. I understand what you are saying but the point is moot. An energy gradient can be described as a transfer of energy. The source of the energy is still the input (the highest concentration of heat). We are saying the same thing. Although I would disagree about the sun being just as useful as a heat sink instead of a heat source but you already stated why this situation would prove problematic.

As an aside, I find it interesting you would choose the atmosphere as your example. Heat energy in the atmosphere is transfered via wind. Humans have been utilizing wind power for quite some time. Granted humans aren't pulling heat energy directly from the air, but we certainly do convert some of the kinetic energy into a form we can more readily use (mechanical and electrical).

Very broadly speaking, bigger isn't more efficient, bigger can smash smaller things (whether by eating them or eating their food). Provided they have the energy to smash; bigger requires greater energy density.

Hm, now following Miuramir's idea with our cave system with its portals to the Plane of Fire, might there be the geater variety of underground life under volcanic glaciers? Greatest differential, after all.

He was talking about positive and negative planes. If such planes existed and you could tap into them then presumably you could generate something like an electric current. Which could potentially be used as an enegy source.

A heat gradient isn't the same thing. The heat could be used as an energy source directly.

What is the functional difference between having a million single-celled organism and a single multi-cellular organism.  Isn't the latter actually *more* efficient than the former?

A million single celled organisms all compete with each other for resources and do not act in a cohesive manner.

As to your second question; it entirely depends on how you want to measure efficiency. In terms of energy efficiency then sure multicellular organisms are more efficient. However, there are definate draw backs to being multicellular, the biggest being reproduction. It is easier to split yourself in half to produce two than it is to grow a new organism. So, in terms of reproductive efficiency, single celled organisms are more efficient. This is partially why populations of single celled organisms can operate in more extreme environments.

However, in terms of survival, neither of the above parameters for measuring efficiency is appropriate on thier own. Many other factors need to be considered. For instance, total energy available for input into the ecosystem and total energy available at each trophic level would need to be examined to determine the likelihood of X populatIon existing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Civilization restoration
« on: August 24, 2018, 01:41:44 am »
If you adventure in the world and meet other dwarfs in your civ, they become historical figures.  Those figures can migrate to your fortress.  Unfortunately it doesn't appear that the game takes geography into account when choosing who will migrate to your fortress, so you can still end up with mostly the same old bunch moving around (especially if they are related).  However, it kind of works and is quite fun (IMHO).  It's funny when migrants show up that have a relationship with your adventurer.  I even had one that had a grudge against my adventurer (I think I was trading silk with him all the time -- I don't know why he hated me :-) ).

Maybe he had a preference for wool.
