The elven caravan from (fantasy gibberish name) has arrived.

Crap, I've been so busy trying to juggle food storage and goblinite that I didn't make a whole lot of trade goods this season... wait, rock pots are elf-safe, we can sell the elves a couple dozen of our meal pots and free up some food storage space that way!

Wait... I'm selling the elves my leftovers for a hundred dorfbucks a serving.

I didn't even think about that, since I usually only ever plant 1x4 or 1x5 plots and schedule crop rotations so stuff doesn't go out of season while it's still growing.

The burrows don't have to be active. Mine rarely are.

Well, DF elves have proven they can be awesome... When raised by dwarves.

The whole immortality thing is a bit of a boon too I would guess.

Immortal? Urist McMilitiaCaptain would like to have a word with you...

I meant immortal if not killed.

(I'm so sorry, it's 2 AM and this was the perfect set-up for Shirou.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Dwarven Recipes!
« on: November 14, 2011, 03:08:28 am »
I expanded my food options a little through modding, so my dwarves end up with things like donkey cheese chili (chili con queso, I'm assuming) and capybara meat pies.

Regarding the latter: "The ingredients are finely-minced capybara meat, well-minced capybara tallow, superbly-minced maize flour, and well-minced prickle berries." Flour and lard for a nice, flaky pie crust, and a filling of meat and tangy wild berries... sounds like a pretty good mincemeat pie to me.

They also somehow managed to make a bowl of chili with nothing but quarry bush leaves, though that I'm significantly less certain about.

Still waiting on my dorfs to figure out pumpkin pie, so once they manage that and a suitably stuffed roast turkey, I can post about dwarven Thanksgiving feasts.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Large, Serrated Glass Disks?
« on: November 13, 2011, 07:21:21 pm »
Glass weapon traps used to be variable quality because the numbers for weight and edge hadn't been established. Once those were fixed, glass traps became a very attractive option for areas without good metals for weaponry-- they hold an edge fairly well, and are heavy enough to make decent spikes, too.

Smelters in burrow-assigned areas sometimes act funny.

Atomsmashers work on small enemies like goblins, but not large enemies like trolls, IIRC. I don't know how jabberers measure up, so this may require !!science!! Also worth noting that atomsmashers won't leave you any goblinite, and that atomsmashers/bridge gates have to be RAISING bridges, not retracting bridges.

I would suggest stuffing the area around the gates/bridges with cage traps, then opening the gates so the siegers run in and get trapped, and the merchants can leave.

If you can enjoy playing with a surface fort instead of digging deep, that's your play style. Me, I hardly ever go below the first cavern layer except to excavate marble for my steel industries. Other people go cruising for that sticky red stuff, or all the way to the circus to see the clowns. Different strokes for different folks, and all.

The Bronze Colossus Ratad Routjaw the Famous Sling has arrived!

Okay, everybody pack up and into the fort. I'll wait for it to nab itself in a cage trap and then-

A vile force of darkness has arrived!

... Oh man, this is going to be f***ing hilarious.

ETA: The goblins did some damage, but Ratad Routjaw the Famous Sling ultimately broke the siege for me, so I sent the army of Bootrazors out to finish it off.

And they did. No dwarven casualties AFAIK, at least half a dozen dead trolls and a couple of dead gobs, but most of the gobbies ran off so no goblinite for me. Hammerlords equipped with silver hammers help quite a bit, but it was a master lasher with a copper whip who finished it off.

I did score a nifty masterwork bronze statue of forgotten beasts.

Use (v) in the trading screen to view merchandise descriptions. View the description of an animal cage, then use either (v) or (enter), I forget which, to view the description of the animal inside.

Out of curiosity I'm going to propose a little experiment. Use (v), find an animal, and hit (g). Does anything change? Do gender signs show up?

I'm still having trouble determining male and female animals, though.  Do you have to have a dwarf with a certain level in some skill in order for genders to show up next to animal names?

No, just use the (v) like everyone said. Look,

Spoiler: Capybara! (click to show/hide)

Like that, see? I may not have any fancy graphics packs, but I know that little red c is a female capybara pup. Is that not what you're seeing?

wasnt there a limit to the no of creatures of one type you could have? or are chicks, roosters and hens seperate ?

They'll stop getting pregnant when the cap is reached, but existing pregnancies/clutches will still carry out. And since chickens can have clutches of like a dozen eggs at once...

going back in time to fix something that goes wrong is not an intended feature.
Tell that to Sam Beckett!

Oh boy!

Tell it to Link in Majora's Mask.

Then brace yourself for the tantrum spiral to end all tantrum spirals.
