DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:33:32 pm »
I had to abandon a fort because all of my injured military dwarves weren't being fed, and consequently starved or died of dehydration, despite having more-than-adequate supplies to sate both. Are there any bugs or the like that would prevent my dwarves - even those who have no jobs - from feeding wounded?

See if somebody else owns all your food. Combining mining/woodcutting and military professions can cause a bug in which the dwarf takes ownership of food supplies, preventing everybody else from using them or even moving them outside when they rot.

True megabeasts-- titans, colossi, dragons, FBs, and clowns-- have TRAPAVOID, if I remember correctly. What you caught might have been an ettin or a giant, a "semi-megabeast".

Can you find its description?

Work on the Great Wall of Paddlepasses has commenced. I'll be giving this fort a nice big front yard, enough to stick a few outside fields, a statue garden, a pond for water, and of course my refuse pile and butcher's yard. Maybe I'll even throw a barracks/danger pavillion out there so my army can train for weather conditions. "When the gobbies come marching on again, hurrah! Hurrah!"

I'm also getting the hang of DF Reveal. I'm using it quickly to identify big veins of useful material and pockets of gems, designate tunnels TO said useful minerals, then turn it off and V Dig everything else. Since I forget what I'd been designating tunnels to, I get the joy of discovery without the hassle of failure or the can of worms.

No real cooks yet, so I've assigned my two peasants to learn the inside of a kitchen. They need the hobby, and the pantries need the storage space. I might also throw some more iron at the forge for picks; my miners are being worked to the bone.

Brooks and rivers fill back up as soon as you take water out of them, so when you try to put that water back into the brook it's already back at 7/7 and the water has to go elsewhere, causing a flood.

A stonecrafter arrived at Paddlepasses in the late spring of 252. After barely scraping buys from the elves and our own dwarven fellows on the skill of our mechanic (also busy with the floodgates to irrigate our fields, the cage traps to fill our herds and protect the fort) and our clothier gem cutter alone, suddenly there are stone crafts enough to buy out the human caravans. Huzzah!

Tonight, I used DF Reveal successfully, without unpausing it and opening ye olde canne of wyrms.

Yeah, yeah, small stuff.

In the past year, a goblin ambush killed some dwarf merchants. This past autumn, the dwarf caravan didn't come. Is this permanent? If they don't ever come back does that mean I'll never get a baron/baroness?

Check your [c]ivilizations screen. Your dwarf nation might have gone extinct.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pig iron

If I remember right, Pig Iron needs to be made with marble, charcoal, and one iron bar.

Marble, Limestone, Dolomite, Chalk, and Calcite are all flux materials that can be used in steel production.

The wiki is your friend.

You can go through the game raws and the save > region raws and replace all the [PET_EXOTIC] tags with [PET] tags, which would make those creatures tame-able without the Dungeon Master. The "Find" function of text editors helps greatly with this.

As for catching the darn things, I've found that placing cage traps between bodies of water works wonders-- Hatchetbrew has more elephants than I know what to do with.

I've seen this before, and I'm betting you have a miner or a woodcutter in the military. Those two professions have their own "civilian" inventories, which can glitch with the military professions to cause shenanigans like this.

Build a lot of coffers and hope the dwarves put some soap in them instead of 9812437142307984231+ thread?

I've found out what a few cleverly-placed cage traps can do, and have had to cull five elephants from the dozen or so caught at Hatchetbrew today.

Found a vein of lignite that, when dug out via vdig, gave me a nice pathway under the river to the other side, so I'm setting up a second entrance and trade depot there, and also finally getting around to making an underground farm for Hatchetbrew's dorfs who have been living on the land rather than under it for a couple of seasons now. Pretty comfortable land to be living on, TBH, but we have to go underground eventually. This ain't Elf Fortress, after all!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: woodcutters won't get wood
« on: November 23, 2010, 04:42:47 pm »
If you've assigned your woodcutters to the military, that's bugged because woodcutters have their own "civilian" arms and equipment (the axes), so trying to reassign them borks the axes and causes them to act weird.

Do you have nobles? Another possibility is that a noble ordered a dwarf be struck down for failing to produce something the noble mandated, even if there weren't supplies for it (this is why a lot of players hate nobles).
