General Discussion / Re: MSPA: There is always a 'U'pdate!

Wasn't there some bit with Tavros as the boy-skylark becoming very powerful late in the class' development?  And wasn't John a boy-skylark at some point on his echeladder?  I never know if a coincidence is significant...

You got thieves.  It's not the .14 bug, then.  (Which wouldn't make sense anyway since I was so wrong about that, still don't know how I missed that little tidbit...)

Do you actually have gobs as neighbors, did they show on embark?

Oh, sorry I mislead you, then;  I didn't see that.  I'd say that is the problem, yes.  The updater would do that eldritch magic.  That was wrong, too, I think; that thing updates raws and there was no raw fix that I know of.

Seems as good time as any to ask this:

I've never played a game of DF where the entire map wasn't entirely red for the caravans.  Is that not normal?

Fix that world?  No.

By the way, the game does not track animal feeding, so chained animals will never starve?
Nope.  They'll be just fine, barring goblin arrows and old age.

You generated the world in .14, there will be no invasions of any kind.

I don't think I've ever embarked with more than 2.  Actually, I never have more than 2, period.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farming problems

So, make sure it has never been exposed to sunlight
I can't make subterrean farming when I floored off the whole thing?
Nothing personal, but is that a "I think so" or a "I definitely know"?
Point is, one of my (planned) farming plots has an "outside" corner (where I hit the muddy pond to get the water). My idea was to wall that corner off later (to make the room nicely rectangular) and put floors on the top to shut out the light. If you're right, then a plot below the floor won't work.
As an utter novice dwarf, I can use almost any advice I can get...
edit:  Sorry, put that wrong.  Regardless, any aboveground tile will stay aboveground when floored over, forever.

Teach me to open my mouth.  I always forget about those damn thin casings they have to use.

I seem to remember reading about a team a number of years ago that were close to the moho.  They would have made it had their bit not veered 1000ft off course.  I wonder now if they ever made another go.

edit: found em, http://www.iodp.org/

Any animal can be chained and any animal will reveal thieves.

'Mohorovičić discontinuity' is the coolest thing. I learned about it from Total Annihilation, which leads me to believe that anything to do with tapping the mantle is awesome.

Yes, moho is badass.

Also, things start to get really hot at that point.  To be honest, you'd need something like Adamantine to drill into the mantle, because, well, the pressure and temperature is so high anything we currently have would be destroyed in a few minutes at best.

It's not the temperature; the mantle is between 500-900 °C.  Steel melts at about 1370 °C depending on the alloy.  It's the pressure that kills you down there.

Speaking of, it sounds like a lot of you seem to be under the impression that the mantle is all molten magma.  Not so.  While the temperature is high enough to melt most of the mantle-rock at sea level, the pressure raises the melting point of the rocks pretty far above that.  The mantle is almost entirely solid.

I'm facing a similar problem, my above ground refuse piles are just too far. Hauling an ogre from the third cavern (z56) to the top (z144) and back down to the butcher's (z136) is stupid.

Does miasma travel vertically? Can I just set up a refuse pit with a ladder and hatch for access?

Right now I atom smash all non-butcherable creatures. Waiting 3 years for 50 goblins to decay while I continue to get sieges is not progress.
It does travel vertically.  It does not, however, travel diagonally.

If it were me, I'd install it in his room.  In place of the door.  While he sleeps.
He can gaze out of it, into a world he'll never know again because he made such a shitty artifact.

But that's just me.
