DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: General tips for DF2010?
« on: October 06, 2010, 01:36:07 pm »
Thanks for this thread guys, gave me the courage to start playing DF again.

I want to make a herd of beautiful white cows.

Do animals still reproduce using spores?

Yes.

Nuclear reactors are wonderful, except when they're built poorly, like a certain Ukrainian reactor...

So, you spawned with Fun right there?  Fun times.  I bet it was over quick.

And I was about to say, "Make sure your Dwarves aren't busy with something else.  Like being on break /grumble."

This is why we should build magma rigs on active volcanoes, so that the magma comes to us instead of us digging down to the magma and burning to death in the consequent eruption because we needed to haul that sock that fell in the volcano or something.

too bad volcanoes erupt and spew sulphur, and ash everywhere. if not chunks of rock. bad idea to have a building on top of that hmm?

I just had the mental image of a building rocketing into the sky because of the pressure

No, it would be rocketing into the sky in a million pieces.

Volcanoes build up enough pressure to literally blow the tops off mountains.  Nothing we could possibly build could contain that.  We don't even know exactly how much pressure is actually there - we can't build anything that will last long enough to measure it.

Brain food inside:

Also, geothermal power is pure awesomeness, but it's so hard to get down as far as you need in most places.  Or, you can move to Iceland.

Then you make...cheese

It is known simply as "Dwarven Cheese"

Even males dwarves can produce Dwarven Cheese.

I...   what...?

I'm not going to ask.  Not here.

I didn't know they could do that.

Speaking of thermal energy, I had a wild imagination. This is obviously impractical to the core, but should be fun.

...A gargantuan, miles-long Sterling engine that is powered by the thermal difference between deep rock and topside rock...

You said it's impractical yourself, so I shal not speak of it..  oops.

That, would be pure badass, to be honest.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: New to DF. Help? Please? OH GOD THE MAGMA

Yeah, Mechanics is pretty simple. Some people can do things with it that will make you weep tears of elven blood... but when used normally it's pretty easy.

One of the first things I did with mechanics was use a screw pump to fill a moat. I realised that if I put a water wheel -behind- the screw pump, and connected it to the pump with a trio of gear assemblies and an axle, I could have the pump fuel itself if I used a dwarf to manually pump long enough for the waterwheel to provide power.

Water reactors are just this realisation experimented with, tweaked, screamed at, flooded, burnt, coated in magma, encased in obsidian and with an almighty cry of "FOR !!SCIENCE!!" the current water reactor plans on the wiki were created. They are compact, they are self sustaining, and they are really easy to make.

Of course some of us like to see huge arrays of water wheels powered by artificial rivers, but we're weird.

All sending power into one master axle, with a gear assembly at the end that you can attach whatever you want to - including more axles with more gear assemblies at the end if you need to power more than 5 things.

Come to think of it, in Real Life this whole petrol problem would go away if we just drilled down a little farther into the mantle.

Burning natural gas for heat?  Use MAGMA instead!
Factories need fuel?  Use MAGMA instead!
Burning coal, oil, and uranium for electric turbines?  Use MAGMA turbines instead!  (hot air is hot air, after all)
Tired of invading countries to take their oil?  Use MAGMA!  It's everywhere!

It's  a good thing.

Life imitates Dwarf Fortress.

Three problems with that, and then one thing that isn't a problem.

1.  Geology sucks.  Truthfully, after you get past a certain depth, we don't know what we'll find.  It's just best guess after the first mile or two down.

2.  With #1 in mind, in most places you have to drill down 20 miles or more, sometimes as much as 40 to actually hit magma / the mantle.

3.  Drilling is really expensive.

4.  You don't have to strike liquid magma, you just have to hit ground that is some 900 degrees (f) and you can have supercritical steam water, which is beyond useful, and very hot.  And under a lot of pressure.

The problem with that is that big mineing equiptment actuilly BENDS away from the earth after about 3 or miles down, and the crust is on average 7 miles deep, due to the magnetic feild or something, I'm not 100% on what causes it but I do know that it happens.

No, it's the simple fact that we really can't make something a straight line when it's 3 miles away and we can't see it - however, we can make drill equipment out of non-magnetic materials, such as titanium alloys, so the EM field a non-factor.

Not mentioning that magma is quite thick and, should it cool whilst flowing/being pumped to where it is required, quite problematic.
Burning coal, oil, and uranium for electric turbines?  Use MAGMA turbines instead!  (hot air is hot air, after all)

We already do that - it's called geothermal energy.

Exactly.  You don't need the magma, you only need the heat.  Water / steam is a great way to move heat around.

Wildlife spawns are random, to my knowledge.  You just have to wait.

Unfortunately.

Also, water is dangerous to Dwarves.

Dwarves swim like rocks.  Creatures in the water like how Dwarves taste.  When they try to take a bite out of the dwarf on the shore, the dwarf dodges (sometimes).  Sometimes they dodge into the water. The dwarf then drowns, and makes a lovely snack.

Your worst enemy is on the inside. The menace will not kill your dwarves... But your FPS. KILL ALL THOSE DAMN CAT'S.

I've never had that problem with cats.  They're dumb enough that they get themselves killed and I end up with a stable population around 20 - 30.

I've never dropped under 20 fps (what I consider playable), except....

.... when I had a major river pouring through a hole into the upper caverns - filling those, slowly...

... combined with 12 pages of Clowns, 80 Dwarves, 3 FB's, 4 squads of gobbos, a caravan, the floor covered in blood throughout most of the fortress, 110,000 stones (1800 of them cotton candy!!!) and finally, did I mention the 20 cats.

I had gobs of diamonds once, because I modded in a rock layer and accidentally added large clusters of kimberlite to it.

...How unfortunate.

... I know, It was so sad.

I seem to recall at one point editing a text file that contained the custom-saved embark profile. Once it was edited (To give an absurd amout of something or other) it was usable. I even renamed it 'cheat'.

That might let you get 7 dwarves with lots of skills and a big chunk of equipment. Bring along enough cloth and gems to stud/sew it all, and then your first immigration wave should come early and heavy.
Yeah, that's data/init/world_gen.txt, you can edit params to any values there, game does not limit them internally (besides of int size itself).
But honestly, whats the point in playing with MORE than 10k embark points? You will already have enough food, wood and tools to last for many years.

Embark with 10,000 pieces of Blue, set it as non-economic, and build your walls out of it.

:P
